The five women talked about the American Revolution and how it did not secure
freedom for all.
Finally, they decided to hold a Women’s Rights Convention for men and women to
discuss and put into action women’s equality.
Mrs. Stanton and the others wrote a “Declaration of Sentiments,” revising King George III’s eighteen
grievances to fit women’s rights.
At the convention, the declaration was signed by 32 men and 68 women agreeing to resolve
all 16 sentiments except the right to vote.
Ridicule followed the next day. Many people who signed the declaration immediately took
their name off.
Las burlas surgieron al día siguiente. Algunas personas quienes habían firmado la
declaración retiraron su nombre inmediatemente.
Due to the hostility, there was a lot of discussion and newspaper articles about
women’s right to vote. The idea spread fast.
Women’s Rights Conventions were everywhere from 1850 to the beginning of the Civil War. The
main discussion was women’s right to vote.
Women had to pass the suffrage act in each state to gain the right to vote. In 1910
Washington was the first to pass the act.
By 1914, eight states had passed the suffrage act. Now the women persuaded political parties
to carry the suffrage act to Congress for complete support.
Women began protesting in states that did not accept the suffrage act; they were arrested.
arrestos.
President Wilson visited some who were arrested in Boston in February 1919, and on his way back knew he had to pass the suffrage act.
The next presidential election in 1920, women were allowed to vote.
Though only one-third of women actually voted in the election, many became activists for equal
rights for women; now in the workplace.
What if you didn’t have the right to vote because of your gender or ethnicity?
Would you have fought for women’s suffrage?
¿Habrían luchado por el sufragio femenino?
What is equality? What does it mean to you?
¿Qué es igualdad? ¿Qué significa para ustedes?
