The WolfPack will again field one of the youngest rosters in the Canada West, if not the entire USPORTS in 2018-19.

Head coach Kelly Shantz continues his rebuilding of the program as he enters his third year at the helm of the Pack.

The team improved upon its Canada West record in 2017-18 by winning three matches and drawing twice to finish in seventh place in the Pacific Division.

For the second straight year, the youthful WolfPack will have no fifth year players. They will have two fourth year captains: Marisa Medonca (Penticton, BC) and Natalie Verdiel (Powell River, BC). Third year veterans expected to provide leadership this season are Cassie Morris (Kamloops, BC), Robin Price (Smithers, BC) and Kelsey Thorkelsson (Winnipeg, MB)

Despite their inexperience, Thompson Rivers have a number of skilled young players. They include midfielder Camryn Curts and goalkeeper Danielle Robertson (both Courtenay, BC). Robertson made a league leading 99 saves last season.

A solid core of sophomores are back with a hard work ethic hoping to move up the standings in Canada West. Among them: Rylee Singleterry (Surrey, BC), Gwen Freeze , Emily Mann and Georgia Aldus (both Kamloops, BC).

Rookies signed out of high school include: Julia Burkart (5’5” defender, Nelson, BC-LV Rogers Secondary/Nelson Selects), Chantal Gammie (5’6” forward, Smithers, BC-Smithers Secondary/Bulkey Valley Soccer Society), Ainsley Grether (5’6” centre back/midfield, Kamloops, BC-NorKam Secondary/Thompson Okanagan Football Club) and Marissa Young (5’7” keeper, Calgary, AB-James Fowler High School/ Blizzard SC 00).

KELLY SHANTZ (SHAWNTZ)

HEAD COACH Kelly Shantz became the third head coach of the WolfPack women’s soccer program on April 5, 2016 replacing Tom McManus.

Shantz’s days with this institution date back to 1979-80 when he was a student/athlete under Pat O’Brien with the Cariboo College Chiefs playing both soccer and basketball. He then joined Cariboo College (later the University College of the Cariboo and now TRU) Sports Task Force and has been responsible for running the annual Mike Bartram Memorial Golf Tournament for the past 17 years.

Shantz had been an assistant coach starting in 2001-02 part-time and then full time for nine years under the direction of Eric Schweizer. He remained with the program for a year after Schweizer retired and McManus came on as head coach.

Shantz feels that the 12-month culture of the program and how it is run is key. “Playing U-Sport soccer at a high level is a year round commitment. It ebbs and flows from an intensity standpoint, but you will not be a good player nor will we be a competitive team if we don’t understand that. Our current culture is a work in progress towards this but we are well on the way.”

Shantz adds “TRU has a fantastic women’s soccer pedigree. From Cariboo College to the University College of the Cariboo and now Thompson Rivers University there are hundreds of alumni, coaches, parents and boosters who have made it a special place for women’s soccer for 30 years. It’s a major goal of mine to invite all these people to help me make it a modern university of choice for talented, motivated student athletes.”

DANIELLE FAUTEUX (fau-TOE)

ASSISTANT COACHDanielle Fauteux brings to the table over 20 years of soccer experience. Three of those years were spent representing TRU where she played 2 seasons under the tutelage of Kelly Shantz. This is her third season as an assistant coach. At the peak of her career Danielle played with the U-17 BC Select Team and the Canadian Women’s National Team. She has been to several Provincial and National Champions representing Kamloops and British Columbia. After playing two years NCAA Division 1 in Tulsa Oklahoma where she set the university record for number of hat-tricks (3), Danielle completed her varsity athletics eligibility at TRU in 2015 at 32 years old. In 2015 alongside Taylor Shantz, Danielle led the Wolfpack to their first CIS playoff appearance. A member of the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame for her time spent as a youth soccer player in Kamloops, Danielle brings experience, focus and intensity to the pitch and is exited to bring TRU to the top of the CIS Women’s Soccer division.

She likes coaching university athletes because, “I can relate to the challenges they are facing. I enjoy imparting knowledge and helping them become a better student athlete.”

COACHING STAFF

TAYLOR SHANTZ (SHAWNTZ)

KEEPERS COACH Taylor Shantz is the coaching team’s youngest member. She is also into her third year as an assistant. She is no newcomer to TRU though, her involvement with the program started at eight years old as a ball girl and then as she got older, a manager. During her university years she was a coach for TRU sports camps. A graduate of Quest University Canada, she finished her five-year Varsity Soccer career as a goal keeper at TRU in 2015, leading the team to its first playoff appearance at the CIS level. When asked what’s the best thing about coaching athletes at the university level, “There’s the obvious fun of working with high performance athletes and talented keepers, but more importantly, I like working with young adults – helping guide them through their own personal development on and off the field during these pivotal years.
