Greetings Wolves! Here we are, nearing the end of January and the closing of semester 1. Students are busy with those closing weeks of review and preparation for finals, as well as the End of Course biology, algebra and geometry retake exams. The talent, character and achievements of our students is evident in the various academic, co curricular and sports avenues. Leadership is busy planning our next Perception Day and this past Saturday night students enjoyed a successful Sadie’s Hawkins dance. The art department is holding the annual end of the semester Art Exhibition on Thursday and Friday, January 23rd and 24th and DECCA students will be competing Wednesday at the DECA area competition. Our instrumental, vocal and drama students have been busy preparing for the upcoming musical performance of Guys and Dolls, a performance you don’t want to miss! Our winter sports programs continue to have a successful season and our cheerleaders recently placed 3 rd in competition and will be moving on to the next level of competition. This also is a year for accreditation and we need your support. Part of the accreditation process includes a parent survey and student survey. To take the survey, please go to: http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/8023082. This is very important so we ask you parents to please complete the survey. For information about accreditation please go to http://www.advanc-ed.org/what-accreditation Please continue to check skyward to see the progress of your student. Every Tuesday the grades should be updated so you can see how your student is doing. If you have questions please email or contact your student’s teacher. If your student is a senior and needs to make up credit, it is important that you connect with your student’s counselor to get your student enrolled in credit retrieval courses. If your student is enrolled in an online class, please help monitor to see they keep pace with the course. All transcripts showing the grade for an online course must be submitted no later than May 24 th . Every year we seem to have a few students who do not keep pace and fall behind and then suddenly the deadline is before them and walking at graduation becomes an issue. Students must meet all district and state requirements to walk at graduation. So, it is important that the students make sure they keep pace with the online learning courses. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s counselor. If your student is in grades 9- 11 they will be receiving their pre registration materials and course catalog on February 20th. You will notice that the course catalog includes a 4 year plan form. Please help them complete their plan and bring it with them when they pre register. Thank you again for your continued support and please if you have questions contact your student’s counselor or teacher. We do want to work together for the success of your student and two way communication with each other is very important. Please continue to check skyward to see the progress of your student. Every Tuesday the grades should be updated so

you can see how your student is doing. If you have questions please email or contact your student’s teacher. If your student is a senior and needs to make up credit, it is important that you connect with your student’s counselor to get

What Is Emotional Intelligence? Why Is EQ Valuable?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage our emotions. Emotional intelligence is sometimes called EQ (or EI) for short. Just as a high IQ can predict top test scores, a high EQ can predict success in social and

emotional situations. EQ helps us build strong relationships, make good decisions, and deal with difficult situations.

One way to think about EQ is that it's part of being people-smart. Understanding and getting along with people helps us

be successful in almost any area of life. In fact, some studies show that EQ is more important than IQ when it comes to doing well in school or being successful at work.

Beginning at about 5:45 AM, the district provides delay and closure information to local television and radio stations via a web-based service at www.schoolreport.org. The information is posted to both this site and the home page of the Tumwater School District site, www.tumwater.k12.wa.us .

At 6:00 AM we call and send an email to all District parents and staff using our School Messenger phone and email system.

You may also call the district’s information line 709-7999, watch KOMO Channel 4, KING Channel 5, KIRO Channel 7, or KCPQ Channel 13 or check any of the following radio stations:

A.C.T. DAYS ARE IMPACTED BY LATE START

If weather causes a late start on an A.C.T. day, students will be released at the regularly scheduled time. There will be no early release for teacher collaboration.

HOW ARE DECISIONS MADE? When weather events happen, there are always questions about the process for making decisions to delay or close schools.

Here are typical steps that are followed.

3:00-5:00 AM: The Transportation Supervisor drives bus routes to determine road conditions. He also checks local, state and regional weather forecast information.

5:15 AM: The Transportation Supervisor makes recommendations to the Superintendent relative to school closure or late start. The Superintendent may check forecasts and consult with other local school district leaders before making the final decision by 5:45AM. Staff alerts media outlets.
