From the Desk of Nurse Cheryl

Robichaux, R.N, B.S.N.

In the last issue of the Warrior News I wrote of the importance of immunizations for all children. I listed the sites in New Orleans where shots are given from the Immunization Bus by The Greater New Orleans Immunization Network (www.GNOshots4kids.com).

If you missed that information, I will repeat the schedule for May and add June to this column. Summer is an excellent opportunity to take care of the medical needs of your scholars without infringing on classroom time.

Remember to bring your child’s immunization records with you. These immunizations are FREE for children ages 6 weeks to 18 years of age.

Message From Our Principal/CEO

May 14, 2015

Dear Warrior Parents,

We are wrapping up the last few days of school. School ends on Thursday, May 21st for students all grades.

This has been an eventful year, as always. This May marks the eighth year since our return from the hurricanes and flooding of 2005. This also so concludes our second full year in our new building.

Our current 8th Grade Scholars are our fifth 8th grade class to leave us for high school. Career Day 2015 (May 12th) brought back FCWCS alumni Leon Cooper, Patricia Cohea, Jada Cooper, Murray Evans, Jermaine Drakes, and Deshawn Capers-Smith. The group spoke to the Class of 2019 as a panel, informing them as to what to expect next year in high school, best practices to employ in high school, etc. Their advice

was “right on the money.” Their wisdom seemed beyond their years. The adults present were struck by their insight and sound advice. These were young adults who just a mere four years ago were leaving our campus for Sci Academy, McDonogh No 35, L. B. Landry (now Landry-Walker), and Warren Easton.

What struck me about this group of young adults–three males, two females–were how involved they were in their school’s extra-curricula activities, while maintaining the GPA (grade point average) needed to participate in the activities. On the panel were members of their schools’ football, volleyball, basketball, and track teams.

But what I saw before me were individuals were had given some serious thought to their lives after high school and college. Yesterday, we were visited by a veterinarian (Leon), an architect (Patricia), (cont’d on page 3)

Ja’nyla Snowden won the final drawing for

parent readers of the

Warrior News 2014-2015!

Thanks to Ja’nyla’s mother and all the parents/guardians who take the

time to read our publication.

Don’t forget to visit our school’s website–fcwcs.org for additional information about

the happenings at FCWCS! See you next school year for our 9th year!

a psychiatric nurse (Jada), an entrepreneur (Murray), a business manager (Jermaine), and professional athlete/sports trainer (Deshawn).

High school is a time of growth–social maturity and academic achievement. These young people have achieved what we attempted to teach them four years ago. When schools and home work together all things are possible.

Academic achievement is always foremost in our minds here. Sports, music, clubs, etc., are used as a way of socializing our student body and giving them incentives to achieve in the classroom. Dozens of students tryout each spring for our auxiliary marching units (dance team, cheerleaders, flag twirlers, majorettes). Each fall, our athletes make their way to the gym to impress our coaches on the volleyball

and basketball courts, and the track and football fields. Music teachers, Jones and Wright, find themselves surveying our music lovers. The students love, we love it and the parents love it! But, we must never lose sight of the most important reason for our institution–education.

Parents of students who hope to participate in these organizations should impress upon their scholars that they must maintain GPAs to participate next year. These activities make school fun, teach teamwork, socialization skills (learning to get along with others), but are now the primary reason for being here.

We would love for all our scholars, especially upper elementary and middle schoolers to find some activity on campus to pique their interest. Involved students often make great students. That’s our goal–great students, learning and growing in a great place, FCWCS. ###

Returns to Give Words of Encouragement & Wisdom

Members of our second 8th grade class–The Class of 2015–returned to campus for Career Day. With words of encouragement and wisdom– (l to r) Deshawn Capers-Smith (Texas A&M), Jermaine Drake (Arkansas), Murray Evans (U.S. Army), Jada Cooper (Dillard University), Patricia Cohea (LSU), and Leon Cooper (LSU) served as panel guests. CAO Terri Williams (rear) moderates.

GiveNOLA Day

FCWCS joined 124 other educational non-profits to solicit funds during the city’s annual GiveNOLA Day, Tuesday, May 5th.

C.L.A.S.S. (Community Leaders Advocating Student Success, our governing board) entered our institution into the yearly fund raiser for non-profits. The online24-hour event was organized by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to motivate giving in Southeast Louisiana. In 2014 the event raised $2.2 million from more than 19,000 donors from all over the USA.

On May 5th, beginning at 12:00 a.m., donors contributed to more than 571 non-profits in the greater New Orleans area (13 parishes). About 35,000 gifts were made in the metro area, resulting in more than $4 million dollars in monetary gifts. FCWCS had more 13 donors, giving $470.00 to our school.

All gifts are tax deductible. Please keep us in mind next year in May. ###

Program, May 26-June 26

Students in need of academic assistance have been invited to take part in a month long enrichment program. The program is geared towards students in grades 1-7. ELA (English Language Arts) and Mathematics instruction will be highlighted. Instruction will take place Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Transportation will be provided by yellow school bus. Breakfast and lunch will also be served.

Instruction will be provided by FCWCS faculty members, who will be able to address student’s academic

limitations in small group settings.

Parents are asked to make sure their scholar is present daily and on time. This instruction will afford them the opportunity to begin the 2015-2016 school year on a positive note. ###

There are still hats, jackets, sweatshirts, and sweaters trying to find their way back home. Days are getting short to retrieve them! Items left after the close of the school year will be sent to shelters for the homeless and Goodwill, Salvation Army or VOA (see Coach Sisco for additional information). ###

Students attending FCWCS are required to adhere to the official dress code. When parents enroll their child(ren) in FCWCS, it is understood that you agree to uphold the policy governing the wearing of uniforms. It is expected that all students will come to school neatly dressed, in clean clothes, properly bathed, with groomed hair. Uniform policies are not optional.

All students (Pre-K through 8 are expected to show up the first day in full uniform.

The dress code for the 2015-2016 will be the same as this school year:

6th Annual - May 1st

Muffins for Mom “How Sweet It Is to Be Loved By

There are usually three activities we can annually expect a full house–Grandparents’ Day (September), Donuts for Dad (March) and Muffins for Mom (May). This year was no exception.

We are always happy to see the adults in the lives of our students interacting with them in such a positive way. “Thank you for showing up and showing out,” as Principal Batiste would say.

Stay the positive forces in your child’s life. Parents and grandparents do make a difference. Remember you are their first teachers! Your positive influence goes a long way.

“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.” –Jane D. Hull (1935 - ) Former Governor of AZ

“To be a good father and mother requires that the parents defer many of their own needs and desires in favor of the needs of their children. As a consequence of this sacrifice, conscientious parents develop a nobility of character . . . “ –James E. Faust (1920-2007) Religious leader, politician, & lawyer

“Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.” –Alex Haley (1921-1992) Writer (Author of Roots and The Autobiography of Malcolm X)

Silverback Society Luncheon April 23, 2015 • Dooky Chase’s

(Class of 2019 Males)

The Silverback Society Mentorship Program treated the Class of 2019 to lunch, a lesson in etiquette, and a great local history lesson April 23rd.

Warriors were taught the importance of the Tremé landmark in the civil rights movement. It was one of the few “nice” restaurants in New Orleans that served African Americans in mid 20th century. Thurgood Marshall, Oretha Castle Haley, “Dutch” Morial, A. P. Tureaud, Jerome Smith, Rev. Avery Alexander, etc. strategized on its second floor civil rights causes that affected the entire nation. In recent years President Barak Obama has dined at the Orleans Avenue eatery. ###
