ALL OF YOUR SERVICES UNDER ONE ROOF!
WLS HIGH HOLY DAYS 2019/5780
WELCOME
2
Dear Members
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” Isaiah 43:19
For 179 years this congregation has dared to be different - embracing the new. Our founding members wanted new forms of prayer, bringing together the richness of our Jewish traditions alongside the very best of modern British culture and academic thought. Throughout our history, we have pioneered these changes in so many areas of Jewish life. Those seeds, so carefully planted by our ancestors, have grown into a vibrant form of progressive Judaism throughout the UK. The secret to the success of this Jewish reformation has been an awareness that the journey can never end, for, in order to make progress, we must keep striving to be progressive. Last year we took an informed, but somewhat radical, decision to move away from the old model of twin High Holy Day services in two separate High Holy Day venues. We transitioned to a 21st century model of services, with a varied programme, offering lots of options for you, our members, to make empowered choices about the forms of worship, cultural interaction and education that best suit you. This High Holy Day menu enabled us to house all our congregants under one roof in our Upper Berkeley Street home. Three wonderful things happened last year. The first was an increase in attendance across the High Holy Days, despite the reduction of venues. The second was the palpable buzz as members moved from a choral service, to a study session, and then to a reflective Yizkor memorial service. The last was the extraordinary atmosphere, especially on Kol Nidre, when both the Sanctuary and the Stern Hall were packed, wall to wall, with members praying together on the most sacred night of the year. This year, once again, we are delighted to offer you a High Holy Day programme with something for everyone. In this booklet you will find services for all ages, from our ShabbaTOTS to our most senior members. Of growing popularity are our upbeat intergenerational services where many a grandparent claps along whilst bouncing a grandchild on their knee. Irrespective of whether you prefer choral services, or our more relaxed and participative Shira services, or even the popular hybrid Combo service, we have something for you. Likewise, we have study sessions that will be intellectually stimulating, engaging sermons and thoughtfully facilitated discussions, alongside catered meals, festival celebrations and YAD (young adults) activities. The challenge, as one member wrote to us after last year’s programme, is how you, our members, can manage to fit it all in. This year our High Holy Days are late, coming at the end of September, so it’s a little premature to wish you a Shanah Tovah. For now, we hope that you have a wonderful summer full of new experiences and look forward to speaking to you in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, when we will call to wish you and yours a happy and healthy new year. Rabbi Julia and Rabbi David (on behalf of the Rabbinic Team)
GENERAL INFORMATION

ENTERING With all of our community under one roof (Upper Berkeley Street), we expect services to be very busy, especially in our 1000-seater Sanctuary. Doors will open an hour before every service (except the 2nd sitting on Rosh Hashanah, where doors will open half an hour before the service) so we encourage members to get to services early and take their seats. Seatholders are marked with GREEN STICKERS. General members are requested not to sit in these seats for at least the first 30 minutes of any service. Please fill up the pews, leaving as few gaps as possible. Our volunteer Stewards will be directing members to empty seats. No one will be able to reserve places for latecomers. If at any point during Yom Kippur there are no seats left in the Sanctuary, members will be able to move to the Samson Family Concourse and watch the live-stream. As soon as spaces become available, one of the Stewards will notify those who are waiting. Of course, some members may prefer to spend a few quieter moments of Yom Kippur sitting in the live-stream area and are welcome to do so.
MEMBERS The Form at the back of this booklet is ONLY needed if you wish to purchase additional tickets, at a guest rate, for friends/relatives who are not members.
SEATHOLDERS If you are a Seatholder and will NOT be needing your ticket, please contact the High Holy Days Office so that your seat may be made available to others.
GUESTS Please use the Application Form at the back of this booklet to apply for tickets before the deadline of Friday 13 September 2019.
STUDENTS Students from Reform congregations may apply for a pass to attend services with any Reform community over the High Holy Days. Please contact Reform Judaism at the Sternberg Centre, for more information via [email protected]. Please note that the Student passes for WLS will be valid on Rosh Hashanah and for all Parallel Services* on Yom Kippur.
MRJ / WUPJ RECIPROCAL If you are a member of a congregation affiliated to Reform Judaism/World Union for Progressive Judaism which offers reciprocal benefits, you may purchase reciprocal tickets at a suggested donation rate. Please enclose a letter from your synagogue confirming your membership. Please note that your ticket for WLS will be valid on Rosh Hashanah and for all Parallel Services* on Yom Kippur.
QUIET ROOM Throughout the services we will be offering a quiet space for individuals and families in the Children’s Synagogue, which is accessed via the staircase in the Upper Berkeley Street main entrance.

08.45-11.00: KOLEINU: EXPLANATORY

For all these answers and more join us for a traditional morning service with lots of room for questions, study and explanations.
09.15-10.30: INTERGENERATIONAL

and Sanctuary Prepare for the High Holy Days with our moving choral Selichot service. The evening commences at 8.15pm in the Stern Hall with the chance to enjoy a glass of wine and special desserts and to meet up with old friends and make new ones. After that, we are privileged to have Rachel Kolsky, well known blue badge guide and expert in Jewish history, talk to us about Jewish history and heritage, with a special emphasis on West London Synagogue as we approach the 150th anniversary of our beautiful building. This event is part of the B’nei B’rith European Day of Jewish Culture and Heritage so we will be welcoming visitors to our community. We will make our way into the Sanctuary just before 10pm for a communal Havdalah followed by our beautiful and moving service, gently taking us into the Days of Awe.

09.45-10.30: SHABBATOTS SERVICE

ROSH HASHANAH 2ND SITTING
Monday 30 September
11.30-13.45: CHORAL COMMUNITY
SERVICE in the Sanctuary The choral Rosh Hashanah morning service is hauntingly beautiful and challenging, punctuated by eerie, right to the heart, blasts on the shofar. And this year we'll be using our new Rosh Hashanah machzor for the first time.
11.30-13.00: TASHLICH meet in the
Samson Family Concourse Fresh air, time for reflection and a gentle walk combine in this special Rosh Hashanah ceremony. This year, with a focus on ‘Living Well’, Rabbi Neil encourages you to join him as he reflects on well-being and change. Tashlich takes place by a water source and allows us to metaphorically interpret Micah’s words, “God will again have compassion on us and cast our sins into the depths of the sea”. The walk is just under a mile and we will be going, whatever the weather. We will be accompanied by a member of our security team and Rabbi Neil will be walking back to the Synagogue after the ceremony.

19.00-19.45: LYONS LEARNING PROJECT
STUDY SESSION in the Goldsmid Hall ‘All Change’ – The Hebrew root for
change and repeat is the same – שנה which is also the Hebrew for year. How is this year different, what will be the same? Rabbi Neil and the Lyons Learning Project asks us how we find the strength to make change in our lives. Can we see individual wellbeing as a communal priority and if so what does that look like? We will look at our sources and in our souls for answers. This will be a taste of the ‘Be’er Chayyim’ (Living Well) programme that Rabbi Neil is running through the Lyons Learning Project.
19.45-22.00: YAD SUPPER
in the Samson Family Concourse A light study session followed by dinner. We will learn, laugh, drink and eat together. To book, contact Or Madmon on 020 7535 0256 or email [email protected]
2ND DAY ROSH HASHANAH
Tuesday 1 October
11.00-12.45: INFORMAL COMMUNITY
SERVICE in the Sanctuary A more informal service with beautiful alternative readings to supplement the regular prayers and Shofar blowing and, instead of a sermon, a chance to learn with Rabbi Neil and the Lyons Learning Project.
10.00-18.00: RABBIS ON THE ROAD Two of our rabbis will visit the sick and housebound amongst our congregation and blow the shofar for them.
SHABBAT SHUVAH
Saturday 5 October
11.00-12.45: COMMUNITY SERVICE
in the Sanctuary Between the high drama of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, comes the quieter Shabbat, where we can reflect on the means and meaning of repentance. A very special Shabbat service.
KOL NIDRE
Tuesday 8 October
19.00-21.15: CHORAL COMMUNITY
SERVICE in the Sanctuary The haunting cello playing Kol Nidre, plus the choir and organ repeating and embellishing it, begins the most solemn day of the year. The music, and the liturgy, challenge us and go straight to the heart.
19.00-21.15: KOLEINU: SHIRA
KOL NIDRE in the Stern Hall On the holiest night of the year, join Rabbis David and Neil together with Maya Levy and our Shira musicians for a gentle, participative service. Starting with Bruch’s haunting Kol Nidre melody, we will work our way into the spiritual depths of Yom Kippur as we pray, shoulder to shoulder and voice to voice, using the words of traditional and contemporary liturgy. All welcome.
YOM KIPPUR SHACHARIT
Wednesday 9 October
11.00-14.00: CHORAL COMMUNITY
SERVICE in the Sanctuary The classical WLS choral service probably hasn't changed a great deal in a century, but it still packs a punch, makes us think, and gets us in the mood for the long, reflective, moving day of Yom Kippur.
12.45-13.30: CHILDREN’S ACTIVIES
in the Basement Come and join us in creating the decorations for this year’s amazing Sukkah! Origami, arts & crafts and special Sukkot decorations in a creative hour for ages 3-10. All family members are welcome to join!
YOM KIPPUR MUSAPH
Wednesday 9 October
14.00-16.00: CHORAL COMMUNITY
SERVICE in the Sanctuary During the deepest and most sacred part of the Day, the growing quiet of the Sanctuary is enhanced by a gentle, historical journey through the Avodah Temple Worship. Our lay historians bring alive the ancient penitential practices of Temple Judaism. As we transition into the Martyrology, we are reminded of our painful past, when generation after generation, from the Rabbis of the Mishnah, to the victims of the Nazis, were persecuted and perished for holding fast to our faith. This two thousand year textual odyssey is accompanied by some of the most moving prayers of the High Holy Days.
14.00-15.15: LYONS LEARNING
PROJECT STUDY SESSION
in the 2nd Floor Conference Room ‘A Time to be Silent and a Time to Speak’ – Join Rabbi Neil as we explore what our sources have to say about how we use speech to build up and to tear down. Can our traditions inform a radical new age of social media? What do our sources say about tale-bearing and might we introduce the ‘Ta’anit Dibbur’ (Fast from speaking) to our conduct in the world? How can our use of language and proliferation of words affect our well-being? This will be a taste of the ‘Be’er Chayyim’ (Living Well) programme that Rabbi Neil is running through the Lyons Learning Project.
9
11.00-13.30: KOLEINU: SHIRA
SHACHARIT in the 2nd Floor
Conference Room A new parallel service. If you are after a participative, musical, spiritual and intellectually stimulating start to the long day of Yom Kippur, then this is the prayer-space for you. Join Rabbi David and a group of lay readers for a more intimate encounter with the morning prayers of Yom Kippur, a liturgy which challenges us to contemplate our successes and failures. This service will conclude in time to join the rest of the congregation for the Torah Service in the Sanctuary.
11.30-12.45: INTERGENERATIONAL
FAMILY SERVICE in the Stern Hall Our Family Services have built a reputation as ‘The Place To Go’ on Yom Kippur for a blend of traditional prayers with interactive participation, music and readings. These services are designed to appeal to young people, their parents and grandparents. No children may be left unsupervised.
11.00-11.45: SHABBATOTS SERVICE
in the Council Room Join Daliah and Jonah, the puppet, for a very special ShabbaTOTS service to mark Yom Kippur. As we hear the story of Jonah, we will think about all the good we’ve done in the past year and reflect on the times we were sorry. Perfect for those aged 0-4 with their parents.
11.00-12.45: TEEN SERVICE
in the Room of Prayer Ages 11-18 - special Teen Service led by WLS young leaders! This will be an opportunity to reflect on the year that has gone and share our hopes for the future. Everyone is invited to wear white, the colour associated with this holy time of year.
goes to the very heart of the relationship between God and humanity - challenging us to question our earliest assumptions around faith. Join Rabbis Helen and David to explore the story and the theology.
YOM KIPPUR YIZKOR & NEILAH
Wednesday 9 October
17.00-19.00: CHORAL COMMUNITY
YIZKOR & NEILAH SERVICE
in the Sanctuary The service begins with an emotional remembering of those who have gone before us, and those who died recently. As we recollect, we think of parents and grandparents and others who sat in synagogue as we do, and we reflect quietly and listen to heart rending music. Like a symphony of five movements, the final Choral service of Yom Kippur brings the long day to a dramatic conclusion. As we transition from the mournful melodies of the Yizkor service towards the triumphant sounds of the grand organ ringing out the very last notes of the Days of Awe, we ask that the Gates of Repentance linger open for just a few more minutes to enable our heartfelt repentance. The closing of the Ark, accompanied by the sounds of multiple shofar blasts, carries the community into a sweet new year.
17.00-19.00: KOLEINU: REFLECTIVE
YIZKOR & UPLIFTING NEILAH SERVICE
in the Stern Hall We all grieve in different ways, which is why this gentle, reflective and intimate memorial service will offer each of us a chance to recall our absent loved ones through prayers, readings and beautiful music. This new Koleinu Yizkor, with its own bespoke sermon, has been designed to help us mourn as individuals and as a community. As we transition into the Neilah Service we move from looking back to looking forward. The Gates of Repentance are closing, so together we will experience an uplifting and soul searching end to Yom Kippur with participatory music and familiar tunes.
15.15-16.00: ASK THE RABBIS PANEL
in the Stern Hall Following last year’s study opportunities in the Stern Hall on Yom Kippur, that allowed people a chance to learn on Yom Kippur afternoon, we are introducing another new session that is particularly interactive and challenging for both rabbis and congregants. On Shavuot we scheduled a special session entitled ‘Ask the Rabbi’, a chance to enable your rabbis to respond to a variety of questions from those present, which covered everything from everyday life to life after death. In fact it was so interesting and thought provoking, that we are running a special session which will be with Rabbis Helen and Neil in the Stern Hall. So come with your questions; they may be about this transformative time in the Jewish year, or about other concerns in Jewish life. Please start thinking now, so that we can make this new innovation an enlivening and meaningful opportunity to increase our Jewish knowledge.
YOM KIPPUR MINCHAH
Wednesday 9 October
16.00-17.00: CHORAL COMMUNITY
SERVICE in the Sanctuary Come and join us for the beautiful Minchah service with its epic reading of the Book of Jonah, set against our WLS traditional liturgy with choral and organ music.
16.00-16.45: KOLEINU JONAH STUDY
SESSION in the Stern Hall It can be said that Jonah was the most successful prophet of the Bible, for with just eight words he turned around the fate of an entire city. On one theological level, the story of Jonah conveys a simplistic message about God, who rewards the faithful and punishes the wicked. And yet, on a much deeper level, Jonah’s tale is a theological challenge to all those who undertake the transformative process of Yom Kippur. For believers and questioners alike, Jonah’s child-like tale
