Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identificationmethod, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devicescalled RFID tags or transponders. RFID (radio frequency identification) is a technology that incorporate the use of electromagnetic or electro static coupling in theradio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum touniquely identify an object, animal, or person. An alternative to bar code. RFID is also calleddedicated shor t range communication(DSRC) logical Standard Created for Control and Sensor NetworksBased on the IEEE 802.15.4 StandardCreated by the ZigBee Alliance

The LPC2141/2/4/6/8 microcontrollers are basedon a 32/16 bit ARM7TDMI-S CPU with real-timeemulation and embedded trace support, thatcombines the microcontroller with embeddedhigh speed flash memory ranging from 32 kB to512 kB. A 128-bit wide memory interface and a uniqueaccelerator architecture enable 32-bit code

execution at the maximum clock rate. For critical code size applications, thealternative 16-bit Thumb mode reduces code bymore than 30 % with minimal performancepenalty.

Due to their tiny size and low powerconsumption, LPC2141/2/4/6/8 are ideal forapplications.

A blend of serial communications interfacesranging from a USB 2.0 Full Speed device, multiple UARTs, SPI, SSP to I2Cs, and on-chipSRAM of 8 kB up to 40 kB, make these devices

very well suited for communication gatewaysand protocol converters, soft modems, voicerecognition and low end imaging, providingboth large buffer size and high processingpower.

The level of the content and its temperature is monitored bythe Microcontroller and displayed on the LCD.

A 16 X 2 LCD is used which displays 16 characters in twolines.

This project can be used for security purpose whereit gives information about the authorized personsand unauthorized persons. This can be applied in real time systems as such in

recording the attendance, in the companies, airports for accessing the passports and in industriesto know who are authorized

. RFID is increasingly used with biometric

technologies for security. Primarily, the two maincomponents involved in a Radio FrequencyIdentification systems are the Transponder (tagsthat are attached to the object) and theInterrogator (RFID reader ).

Communication between the RFIDreader and tags occurs wirelessly andgenerally doesn’t require a line of sightbetween the devices.RFID tags are categorized as eitheractive or passive.

Active RFID tags are powered by aninternal battery and are typicallyread/write, i.e., tag data can be

rewritten and/or modified.

Page 20: Wk319 With Arm7

An active tag's memory size variesaccording to application requirements;

some systems operate with up to 1MB ofmemory.Passive RFID tags operate without aseparate external power source andobtain operating power generated fromthe reader. This project uses passivetags.

Read-only tags are typically passive andare programmed with a unique set ofdata (usually 32 to 128 bits) that cannotbe modified.

The reader has three main functions:energizing, demodulating anddecoding. The antenna emits radio signals toactivate the tag and to read and write

data to it.In this project, the RFID module readertypically contains a module (transmitter

and receiver), a control unit and acoupling element (antenna).

This module is interfaced with theLPC2148 and when the card is broughtnear to the RFID module it reads thedata in the card and displays on theLCD.If the data in the card is matched withthe data in the program memory then itcompares and displays authorizedmessage.

If the data is not matched it displaysunauthorized.

For authorized message, the door getsopened and the person gets in after

sometime the door gets closed. If it is anunauthorized person it alerts the personsthrough a buzzer.

The RFID module indicates a buzzerwhenever it reads the data from the RFIDcard. The significant advantage of all types ofRFID systems is the non contact, non-line-of-sight nature of the technology.

The programming of the LPC2148 controller is donein either C language.

The program is simulated using Keil software.
