Three parts:

Lecture on Monday morning (1 hour)

Recitation (2 hours) Monday or Tuesday

Lab (2 hours) Wednesday or Thursday

School of Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering

Most of your time is spent in these smaller lab/recitation sections: “learning communities”

Discussion Circles will be a way to get to know a smaller group of students

Take the time to get to know your classmates in this section

School of Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering

Learn a little about a lot

What types of engineers are there and what do they do?

Develop a plan!

Learn some of the basic skills and software that engineers use.

Learn and then demonstrate your knowledge of the design process

Meet new friends and develop teamwork skills.

MONDAY MORNING LECTURES

It’s a great way to start the week!

You might already have seen some of the material.

Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds

We can all get better!

“The class takes too much time!”

Engineering classes in general take a lot of time.

How much time should you spend on this class every week?

School of Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering

We will use a Discussion Circle format to help each other learn about different areas of engineering

Each week:

First 10 minutes of recitation will be your discussion circle

Rotate through “roles”

Prepare by reading and filling out worksheet for your role

Hand in worksheet for 50% of recitation participation grade

School of Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering

READ and RESEARCH about Engineering

Most common way engineering information is shared

Everything created by humans is engineered

YOU can see how to make it better?  You ARE an engineer!

Discussion circles create a learning community

Support for your academic work

From: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, October 2, 2008 3:31 PMTo: [email protected]: Request for meeting re. upcoming absence from ENGR 111

Dear Professor Lyons,

I will be leaving town on Wednesday, October 21, to attend my brother’s wedding the following weekend. Unfortunately that means I will miss our Thursday (Oct. 22) class that week. I apologize in advance for my absence.

May I come by your office during your Oct. 12 or 14 office hours to discuss what I’ll be missing on 10/22 and get the homework for that class ahead of time? If so, please let me know which of those days is most convenient.

Again, I apologize for my upcoming absence on 10/23. Thank you for helping me keep up with the course material and assignments.

Sincerely,

Chris [email protected]
