Page 8: Wk 3 Assess communication linking theories

Role of the theories

• Arygle's (1972) theory is important because...

• The purpose of the communication cycle is to ensure that all individuals understand how the message is given effectively and allows care professionals to decide whether the message is getting across in a health care setting.

Page 9: Wk 3 Assess communication linking theories

• Tuckman's (1965) theory is important because...• The purpose of Tuckman's (1965) theory is to

ensure that all individuals in a group to work with one another to produce an outcome

• Helps them understand the process involved • Helps identify how to progress to the next stage• Promotes effective team work through

encouraging team members to go through each stage

Argyle and Tuckman - Examples

• Need to relate each part of the theories to the example.

• E.g. Argyle• An idea occurs- Dr has an idea that he is going to

speak to a patient• Message coded- Dr thinks about what they are going

to say. Put what they are going to say into language• Message sent- Dr speaks to the patient and sends the

message across• Continues in the same way

Page 16: Wk 3 Assess communication linking theories

Positives and Negatives about Argyle• The Advantages • It helps you to understand the other person clearly.• It allows you to think before you speak and think how you are

going to say it. You know the correct way to say it so the message is not misunderstood.

• It shows reflective listening.• The Disadvantages • People may not decode the message properly and they can

misunderstand the message, the other person could be in a bad mood and so they would not reply back to you but it needs to be a two-way process to work.

• Not being aware of all types of communication with people, e.g. somebody not knowing sign language

Page 17: Wk 3 Assess communication linking theories

Positives and Negatives about Tuckman

• Advantages• Provides a level of guidance for team development• Simple means of discussing and exploring team dynamics• Useful understanding of different team requirements at

different times• Disadvantages• Not always clear when people move from one stage to

another (can be overlap)• No guidance on time frames between stages• Does not account for individual roles that team members

will take • Makes team building appear too linear
