    liftgate.

    COMBINATI ON FLASHER

    DESCRIPTION

The combination flasher is located in the JunctionBlock (JB) (Fig. 6). The JB is located underneath thedr iver s ide of the ins t rument panel outboard of thesteering column. The combination flasher is a smartre lay th at funct ions as both the turn s ignal systemand the hazard warning sys tem f lasher. The combi-nat ion flasher contains active electronic IntegratedCircuitry (IC) elements. This flasher is designed to

handle the current flow requirements of the factory-installed l ighting. If supplemental l ighting is addedto the turn signal lamp circuits, such as when towinga t ra i ler with l ights , the combinat ion flasher wil lautomat ica l ly t ry to compensate to keep the flashra t e the same.

The combination flasher has nine blade-type termi-nals that connect i t to th e vehicle electrical system.Refer to the appropriate wiring informat ion.

Because of the active electronic elements withinthe combination flasher, it cannot be tested with con-ventional automotive electrical test equipment. If the

combination flasher is believed to be faulty, t est theturn s ignal system and hazard warning sys tem cir-cuits.(Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/LAMPS/LIGHTING- EXTERIOR - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - TURNSIGNAL & HAZARD WARNING SYSTEM). The com-bination flasher cannot be repaired or adjusted and,if faulty or damaged, i t must be replaced.

OPERATIONThe combinat ion flasher controls the fol lowing

inputs and output s: B(+), fused ignition switch out-put , le f t turn swi tch sense , r ight turn swi tch sense ,hazard swi tch sense , left front turn s ignal ci rcui t ,

r ight front turn s ignal c ircui t , left rear turn s ignalci rcui t and r ight rear turn s ignal c ircui t . Constantbat tery vol tage is supplied to the flasher so that i tcan perform the hazard warning funct ion, and igni-t ion switched battery voltage is supplied for the turnsignal function. However, when the flasher is idle nocurrent i s drawn through the module . The uni t doesnot become active until it is provided a signal groundfrom the turn s ignal switch, hazard warning swi tchor the Body Control Module (BCM).

The IC within the combination flasher (Fig. 7) con-tains the logic tha t controls the flasher operation andthe f lash ra te . When a bulb is burnt out , or when acircuit for a lamp is open, the turn signal flash ratewill increase. However, an open lamp circuit or burntout bulb does n ot change t he hazard warning flashra te .

Turn s ignal inputs that actuate the combinat ionfla sher a re low cu r ren t g rounds, each d rawing amaximum of 300 mill iamperes .The hazard warningsignal input is a low current ground drawing a max-imum of 600 milliamperes.

    REMOVAL

WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR-BAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFOREATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERINGCOLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENTDIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISO-LATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE,THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYS-TEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PER-FORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THISIS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAGSYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRE-

CAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONALINJURY.

    (1) Disconnect and isola te the bat tery negat ivecable.

    (2) Remove t he steering column cover. (Refer to 23- BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/STEERING COL-UMN OPENING COVER - REMOVAL).

    (3) Remove the combination flasher from the Junc-tion Block (JB) (Fig. 8).

    DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPMODULE

DESCRIPTIONThe Daytime Running Lights (Headlamps) System

is installed on vehicles manufactured for sale in Can-ada only. A separate module, mounted in the junctionblock under the dash, controls the DRL.

OPERATIONThe headlamps are i l luminated at a reduced inten-

s ity when the engine is running, headlamp swi tchoff, and the parking brake released.

REMOVAL(1) Lower the junction block. (Refer to 8 - ELEC-

    TRICAL/POWER DISTRIBUTION/JUNCTIONBLOCK - REMOVAL) for service procedures.

    (2) Remove th e m odule from t he junction block.

INSTALLATION(1) P osit ion the module in the junction block and

press to secure.(2) Install t he junction block. (Refer to 8 - ELEC-

    TRICAL/POWER DISTRIBUTION/JUNCTIONBLOCK - INSTALLATION) for service procedures.
