Laptops and Tablets on Planes: The Ban Bungle

The United States on Monday (21 March), and the United Kingdom on Tuesday (22 March), banned most electronic devices, like laptops and

tablets, on all flights from several Middle East countries. The confusion and frustration that this new ban has unleashed on passengers,

and on airport-officials, is just too complicated to be put into words. The US ban, for example, is technically related to ten airports in eight countries

- Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar and United Arab Emirates.

The affected foreign airlines are Royal Jordainian, Egyptair, Turkish airlines, Saudia airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Morocco, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad, along with US airlines.

The UK ban, however, applies to all direct passenger flights only from six countries - Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

The affected airlines by UK ban are six UK carriers – British Airways, EasyJet, Jet2, Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson – and eight foreign carriers.

See the lack of uniformity? And how the passengers and airport authorities must cope?

On top of that, we hear that France is also considering a ban but has not taken a decision yet. Netherlands is saying: “At the moment we don’t see reasons to introduce similar measures.”

Belgium said it would not introduce a ban without a decision from the ‘European Aviation Safety Agency’. Australia said it would monitor the new arrangement but was not at present planning to follow suit.

So, just imagine the situation if different countries come up with different policies on travel-safety!

Anyway, why this ban now? Was it a right decision? And could it have been better planned and managed?

These are the things I wish to address briefly. To know why the ban came into place, and whether it was a good decision, we

must look at the reasons behind it.According to a report in ‘The Guardian’ on Sunday, 26 March, the ban “was

partly prompted by a previously undisclosed plot involving explosives hidden in a fake iPad”.

It had also reported on 8 February 2016 that, “Video footage analysed as part of Somalia’s investigation into an explosion that blew a hole in a passenger plane shows two men handing what looks like a laptop to the suspected bomber after he passed through security”.

So, the rationale of US homeland security that terrorists are becoming more and more ‘innovative’ cannot be ruled out.

In fact, considering the fact that small and powerful remote devices are nowadays connected on Wi-Fi and Internet, who knows, even a ‘mobile’ phone could be used for destructive purposes like for remote detonation.

However, I find it strange that despite high-level intelligence sharing between US and UK, the travel bans are different by both countries.

For example US list has Qatar and the UAE among the countries from where passengers cannot board the cabins with large electronic devices. These two countries are not on the UK list.

If UK assesses Qatar and UAE as having high levels of airport security, why is US not assessing the airports in the same way?

Some commentators are saying that this ban is a cunning plot, designed to destroy the Middle East airline industry, which has been doing very well of late. But that is far-fetched and can’t be true because this ban is also frustrating the US and UK airlines operating from Middle Eastern countries.

Could this ban have been better planned and managed?Yes. I feel it could have been handled a lot better. When the decision affects

millions of passengers, from several airlines, from airports of many countries, the inconvenience that this ban would cause must also be taken into account.

It is 2017. Smart phones, laptops, and tablets are not luxury items anymore. They are essential communication devices which people carry into the cabin, as cabin baggage. Business professionals, journalists, academics, civil servants, research scholars and students use airport lobbies and air-travel-time to work on important projects.

If these passengers had known about the ban in advance, they would have been better prepared. They wouldn’t be straining the airports. At least a week’s notice would have lessened the strain on airports and passengers.

For our own safety, we are all now willing to wait in long queues at airport terminals, to get our baggage screened and to have our bodies frisked; which is good.

Like body-screening equipment, maybe there is a need for hi-tech systems which can identify and detect fake electronic products that could endanger the travellers.

Meanwhile, however, let us at least use the travel-time to improve our ‘social skills’ instead of our ‘social media skills’ on these banned devices.

Shrimping ban; Violators to face penal action

Muhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Manama

Fishermen violating the summer shrimping ban would face

stringent actions like arrests and hefty penalties, DT News has learnt.

In a telephonic interview with DT News yesterday, Bahrain Fishermen’s Society (BFS) President Waheed Al Dossary confirmed that more stringent penalties need to be enforced to curb the continuous breach of the annual ban and draining of marine resources.

Al Dossary said that smugglers of fresh shrimp would face legal accountability.

“There are plans to coordinate with the Saudi Customs on King Fahad Causeway to arrest and handover smugglers and to confiscate the smuggled shrimp,” Al Dossary informed.

Al Dossary’s statements followed a meeting between a delegation

representing local fishermen and Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf yesterday.

Al Dossary said that a set of grievances and demands were handed over to the minister who pledged to refer them to the Cabinet and reply to the delegation within two weeks from now. He said that the period could be possibly adjusted.

“We demanded the reconsideration of the period of the ban, as many fishermen remain jobless for six months. It was previously implemented for four months and we wish for it to continue that way,” Al Dossary told.

The delegation also shared several points with the minister that included restoring the financial support of BD3 million to local fishermen that was previously received from the Labour Fund (Tamkeen).

In addition to BFS members, the delegation included Sitra Fishermen

Society President Mohammed Mansour and other members.

They voiced out their support to the ban, yet insisted on altering the length of its period. The delegation also thanked the minister for immediately opening the doors of his office and arranging a meeting with fishermen.

On his part, Khalaf affirmed that the ministry is keen on fulfilling the demands of local fishermen, considering the importance of the sector in achieving food security in the Kingdom.

DT News reported earlier this month that Minister Khalaf issued Resolution 27 of 2017 on March 7, banning shrimping and the sale of fresh shrimps for six months.

The ban came into effect on March 15, banning shrimping and the sale of fresh shrimps. This irked the local professional fishermen, as 400 of them who are only licensed to catch and sell shrimps will remain jobless for six months.

Expat students waste a yearArunita Praharaj/DTNNManama

Several expat students will have to wait for another year before

they are admitted into UKG and Grade I because of the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) minimum admission age stipulation.

Earlier this year, the MoE had stipulated 6 years (as of March 31) as the minimum age for Grade I admissions. This contrasts with the admission procedures in India and Pakistan where the minimum age requirement is between 5-7 years.

A month after schools affected by the minimum age stipulation requested to make an exception for students following the Indian or Pakistani curriculum, many pupils living in or those recently transferred to the Kingdom have ultimately been denied admissions and also

undergone the non-registration process.

Prince S. Natrajan, Chairman of the Indian School Bahrain said: “While we understand the concerns that parents are facing at this stage, it is important to see the reason behind such changes too. Students only have to wait for a couple of months before another academic term starts and they will be much more ready to come back to school.

“We had several discussions with the relevant authorities and decided that it was important to practice a uniform age system within a country. We have started to follow the new rules and admit students accordingly,” he added.

Meanwhile, DT News spoke to parents who have finally accepted the situation after months of struggling to seek admissions for their wards in the Kingdom. Many of them

are planning to shift their country of residence for a year to ensure uninterrupted education for their children.

One of the parents said: “My ward has been denied admissions as she exceeded the age restriction by two months. It is quite stressful and I don’t want my child to sit idle for an entire year so I have decided to move back with her while my partner works here.

“The schools should have held more inclusive meetings so we were clear about the issue from the beginning and made arrangements in time.”

The new rules call for a pupil’s age to be determined with original birth certificates as proof and if the certificate indicates the student’s birth date exceeds December 31 2011, the Ministry requires a non-registration of the primary student.

Seaweeds, Tubli Bay fishermen’s new bait

Muhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Manama

Fishermen on the shores of Tubli Bay, a few

kilometres to the south of the Capital, have found a new way to make ends meet during winter season.

Instead of spending on pricey baits to catch fish, these fishermen collect special seaweeds that only grow in winter when temperatures are suitable.

On a drizzly day in East Eker, the southeaster shores of Tubli Bay, DT News met Bahraini sailor Abdulzahra Hassan (Buhassan) who informed that these plants, which are locally known as “Hasheesh” or “Khamag”, are found on the shores of b a y s such

as Tubli and Arad Bays.“They grow near the

shores between the months of November and April. The fish, especially Safi which is the most desired locally, like this type of seaweed. We catch

more fish during this season, thanks to these plants,” says Buhassan.

The sailor, who has been in the business for around two decades, explained that the

seaweeds save them thousands of dinars that are usually spent on buying baits.

For six months, the sailors spend twelve hours a day collecting the plants. They wait for the low tide and then enter the sea, not crossing 300 metres distance inside the water.

DT News was informed more about this by a

veteran Asian fisherman. Bangladeshi national Mohammed Abdulkhaliq told that he has been sailing in Bahraini waters for around 25 years and is

now supervising a fleet of

f i s h i n g boats.

While on the coast of Jidali, the northwest side of Tubli Bay, Abdulkhaliq told DT News that collecting Khamag is a common practice among local fishermen during winter.

“We come to Tubli Bay almost every day to collect the seaweed in the six months of winter. First we collect them in bags and carry them in six-wheeler trucks to shore. Then we mix it with sea sand to increase the volume and weight of the plants. We use shovels and tilling tools usually used in agricultural activities,” Abdulkhaliq explained.

DT News witnessed the process. Piles of the plants are unloaded from the trucks on the shores. More pi les of sand are

placed on top of t h e m .

Similarly to tilling soil, shovels and hoes are used to mix the seaweed with the sand.

According to the fishermen, they manage to fill around 120 bags in a day. Each bag weighs 50 kilogrammes, leaving them with 6 tonnes of bait. Abdulkhaliq told that it’s sufficient for three days of fishing trips.

This improvised bait could only be used while fishing using the local “Gargoor” fishing method. The Gargoor is a domed wire fish trap that is made in different sized, with some as big as a big room. It’s dropped down to the seabed and is made in a special way that the fish could enter but not exit it. Gargoors are commonly used by fishermen in the Arabian Gulf region.

When asked if the “Khamag” could be stored to be used in summer, Abdulkhaliq said the bait couldn’t be sold or stored as it dries up and get rotten quick. He added that whatever they collect is usually used within 24 hours from the time it’s collected.

Seaweeds, Tubli Bay fishermen’s new bait

The fishermen shared their grievances with DT

News saying that they had requested the authorities to open roads for them to easily reach the bay over the past few years, but their pleas were unheard.

They now have to drive one unpaved road to reach the shore of Jidali. One of the fishermen told that the road is sandy and there’s a risk of their trucks getting stuck in it, considering the heavy weights they transport.

Additionally, Buhassan accused the Capital General Secretariat (formerly municipality) of targeting the fishermen and depriving them from benefiting from the bounties of the sea.

He claimed that an inspector of the secretariat is preventing them from collecting the seaweed because of a personal grudge against one of the fishermen and not due to environmental as claimed.

“He closed the roads to the bay near Jidali more than one time in the past few years. Last year he closed the only road leading to the coast, while we were in the water, locking us inside the area,”

Buhassan alleged.In a recent development,

the same inspector on Saturday fined the fishermen with BD800 for disposing waste on the shore. A BD50 fine was given to each driver of the 16 trucks that were on the shore that day.

“The inspector claims that we are harming the environment by disposing waste on the shores. We collect all of our trash in one spot away from the shore, making the municipality cleaners’ job easier, as they only have to pick it up from one place. We informed the cleaners about that and we reached to an agreement with them. We are not harming the environment. How could we harm marine life, while

we depend on the sea for a living,” Buhassan said.

The irritated man added, “In fact, I have personally seen the municipality cleaners disposing of waste on the shores and warned them multiple times about their acts. The inspector was informed about it, but he denied in spite of showing him footage proving my claims.”

DT News asked a couple of local fishermen about whether collecting these seaweeds is harmful to the environment. Their opinions were split, as many of them said that it’s harmless to the environment, while others insisted that it drains Tubli Bay of natural food for fish.

6 Monday, March 27, 2017

When we are born in this world we are like an empty slate, waiting to be written about. Some of the writing in the early years of our life is done by others-our

parents, teachers, peers and society. We ourselves are born with certain inborn traits and predilections that make us predisposed to behave in a certain way.

But above all we have all been endowed with a most wonderful organ, the human brain that literally makes us the master of our destiny. This means that we can be who we want to be! This isn’t fantasy or wishful thinking, but pretty much established scientific wisdom. We can train our brain to help us achieve our objectives in life.

It so happens that our brain communicates with what are known as neural pathways. If we are pessimistic in our approach, it is because our neural pathways are created like that. But the surprising fact is that our neural pathways can change with our thoughts. If we make a conscious effort to change our thought process from negative to positive, we will change the nature of our neural pathways as well, which will start conveying to our whole being that we are winners.

The implications of this are enormous for human beings for this means that one can hope to expand our horizon limitlessly and achieve pretty much everything that is humanly possible to achieve. Life offers us limitless opportunities and pathways to carve our destiny. We only need to keep our eyes open and ours ears close to the ground to see what it is that we could choose to make our destiny.

For any person reading this, I would like to say that it is a great idea to meet as many interesting people as one can meet, read the most interesting of books, travel as much as you can and imbibe the best that the world has to offer. Keep away from negative people or people who would bring you down. By doing all this you are helping create the best possible neural pathways that will help you achieve every success in life.

Nobody is born a great achiever. Even those acknowledged as geniuses will tell you that they didn’t become one overnight. They slogged harder than their peers and made tremendous sacrifices to achieve their objectives. With time they not only achieved their goals, but became so good at what they did, that appeared to be gifted or naturally talented. When we, for example see Olympic gymnasts perform so magnificently, they seem to belong to another species altogether- how would it be possible for anyone to perform those intricate and highly acrobatic exercises with such consummate ease?

But the fact of the matter is that they may have been like you and me as children, but they decided very early in their life, that an ace gymnast was what they wanted to be, so they trained with all their body and mind to get there. It would not have been easy to start with and they would have cried and suffered along the way, but by and by gymnastics became the raison d’etre of their life and everything came to them as easy as breathing.

Each one of us goes through this process at some level. Every time we learnt a new skill like cycling, swimming or driving we would at first have felt some doubt and hesitation, but with some guidance from others and our own perseverance we became so good at these things that they became like second nature for us.

So let no person, situation or circumstance dictate who or what you want to be. Nobody is genetically programed to grow up and become a doctor or an engineer or a scientist. There are no people who are born athletes. Everybody has to basically make an effort to excel at something in life. It is not as if, like in a classical fairy tale, you are born with a destiny that is yours to fulfil and nothing can keep you away from it.

That is all hogwash. You think like that, the world will pass you by and not give you a second look. Nothing is guaranteed in life. You may have that fancy college degree, yet find out that you are hopeless in dealing with practical problems that your 9 to 5 job presents you with. Maybe you are better suited to being an entrepreneur where your academic acumen could be better utilized to grow your business, rather than feel stifled in a job, which does not have too much use for your specialist skills.

Life may not be smooth and predictable, but you can sooner or later figure out the things that you are good at or enjoy doing. Once you have that settled, do everything in your might to excel at that and nothing can come between you and your desired goal. Your neural pathways would in sometime be primed to making you take just the right steps and make just the right decisions to get to the very top.

Nobody denies that fact that there are things like some inherited talent or advantages of being born into a privileged family, but the fact of the matter is that these will help just a little. One still has to take the right decisions and have the right attitude to leverage these. On the other hand a person from not such a privileged circumstances may have fire in his or her belly and work with that much more passion to get where they want to be.

One may wait a lifetime for good things to happen to one or one might seize the initiative and leave no stone unturned in creating a grand edifice of success for oneself. The choice here may be a no brainer, but one would be surprised at the number of people who choose the former option over the latter. Never make that mistake. You live only once. Make it count.

Prohibited drugs used in medications were confiscated

from the house of a female Asian doctor, who was recently arrested for conducting illegal abortion operations at a private hospital in the Kingdom.

Ministries and Public Institutions Prosecution Head General Attorney Mamdouh Al Ma’awda announced yesterday that the prosecution

was notified about the doctor by the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA).

“NHRA informed that the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science detected an Asian female doctor who has been conducting illegal abortion operations at a private hospital in return for certain amounts,” Al Ma’awda stated.

“The prosecution issued a warrant to search the defendant’s residence, where assorted drugs used in banned abortion operations and amounts of

money in different currencies were detected and confiscated,” he added.

The prosecution interrogated the defendant and ordered to detain her pending further investigations and to handover the seized drugs to NHRA for examination.

DT News reported on Saturday that the woman was arrested after the police was tipped-off about her illegal activities and that investigations led to catching her red handed.

No further details were available on the identity of the doctor or the private hospital she worked at.

Manama

With the vision of diversifying Bahrain’s

economy by boosting the private sector, Bahrain Investment Market (BIM), an innovative equity market, was launched yesterday.

A bell-ringing ceremony was held yesterday at Bahrain Bourse premises in Manama to inaugurate the equity market. The market is expected to provide companies an alternative cost-and time-effective means for raising capital.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism (MoIC) in Bahrain and the Minister-In-Charge of Bahrain Bourse Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahrain Bourse CEO Shaikh Khalifa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Tamkeen Chief Executive Dr. Ebrahim Janahi, Managing Partner of KPMG in Bahrain Jamal Fakhro, and Managing Director of Keypoint Wajdi Al-Jallad.

According to Bahrain Bourse, listing in BIM will help companies in many ways; apart from providing an innovative financing option, it also gives access to professional advice and guidance, higher brand recognition, and an easier path in transferring to the mainboard market.

As per BIM rules, companies must appoint and retain a sponsor before and during the listing process. In return, the sponsor is responsible for providing companies the required support and guidance to fulfil the BIM admission and financial disclosure requirements. BIM looks to follow the successes of regional equity markets such as Nomu of Saudi Arabia, Qatar Venture Market of Qatar and NILEX of Egypt. Internationally London Stock Exchange - AIM and Singapore Stock Exchange - Catalist are similar to BIM.

Shaikh Khalifa said that BIM will address the financing gap faced by fast-growing companies who seek growth capital but are not yet at the level where they are able to meet the criteria of the Bahrain Bourse Mainboard.

“I am pleased to say that the Bahrain Investment

Market is now officially open for business. Having two of the leading advisory firms coming on board as authorized sponsors and more expected to join soon, as well as Tamkeen’s new dedicated support program, adds even more value to the BIM’s innovative world-class equity market ecosystem.”

Commenting on this announcement, Tamkeen’s Chief Executive Dr. Ebrahim Janahi said, “Tamkeen’s support for the Bahrain Investment Market comes as part of our efforts to support enterprises across all stages of development and making the private sector the key driver of economic growth.

In addition to access to capital, listed companies will benefit from the implementation of globally-accepted standards for financial auditing and reporting such as the IFRS and AAOIFI, as mandated by the BIM.

Managing Partner of KPMG in Bahrain Jamal Fakhro, noted, “KPMG has had a presence in the country for nearly 50 years, and we understand the needs and challenges that local enterprises face. We are looking forward to combining our local expertise with our global network and resources to provide companies wishing to be listed within the BIM with market-leading insights and tailored Advisory services.”

Managing Director of Keypoint Wajdi Al-Jallad, commented, “ This is a first step towards a robust and well-regulated stock market platform that will aim to assist various sizes of companies from different economic sectors who are seeking expansion and growth. We pledge our commitment to play an effective role to support the vision of the Bahrain Bourse to make Bahrain Investment Market a successful initiative”

“Start-ups represent the largest and fastest-growing segment of the private sector. According to figures released by Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism earlier this year, the number of commercial registrations in Bahrain nearly tripled, from 9,000 in 2015 to nearly 27,000 in 2016. Therefore, initiatives such as the BIM will fill an important financing gap in the

market.” Bahrain Bourse said in a statement yesterday.

Bahrain Investment Market is open to all companies in the GCC and MENA region.

Uber has pulled its self-driving cars from the roads after an accident which left one of the vehicles on its side.

Pictures posted online showed the car on its right side on an Arizona street, next to another badly damaged vehicle.

The car - a Volvo SUV - was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, on Friday, Uber said. The accident occurred when another vehicle “failed to yield” to the Uber car at a left turn.(BBC)

The bulk of footwear chain Jones Bootmaker has been sold to investment firm Endless, saving 72 stores and 840 jobs.

However, the remaining 31 stores will close and about 260 jobs are expected to be lost.

Jones was owned by Alteri Investors, whose “value” shoe chain Brantano collapsed earlier this week.

Endless bought the profitable parts of the business under a “pre-pack” administration deal.

A number of oil and gas majors are going through

an existential crisis in recent years given that the world is decisively and rapidly moving away from fossil fuels. Therefore, the future of the industry in its current form seems rather uncertain, says an LBS expert.

According to Ioannis Ioannou, Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, London Business School, it is no surprise that a number of oil companies across the Middle East are already beginning to invest in renewable forms of energy, hoping that such investments will act as a stepping-stone for the next phase of the energy landscape.

“For the oil and gas industry, perception and timing are critical – the recently announced $5bn investment in solar panels by Aramco, ahead of what could become the biggest IPO ever, warrants closer attention. A true commitment to renewables, and a credible pitch towards investors, should be embedded throughout the organisational structures and processes ,” Dr Ioannou said.

“Research shows that companies perform better in the long run, and thus produce superior shareholder returns, only when environmental and social issues become part of a corporation’s DNA. For Aramco, this means a credible commitment to renewables will have to include appropriate ways to incentivise top executives, formal responsibility for the renewables division at the highest levels of the company’s hierarchy,” he said.

“ It also requires transparency with regards to the company’s overall impact on climate change and reporting transparency around both renewables as well as the fossil fuels division of the company.”

According to Dr Ioannou, the adoption of these elements would signal deep engagement with stakeholders in the renewables industry in the long term and it will also signal a longer-term time horizon for decision-making at Aramco.

He continued: “Importantly, one should also not underestimate the challenge of competing in the same industry – in this case, the energy industry – with two very distinct business models: fossil fuels and solar. Aramco’s long-term success – and hence, its ability to generate investment returns – will hinge upon its ability to evaluate whether the synergies generated by competing with two positions in the same industry outweigh the costs, and whether the resulting conflicts can be managed effectively.”

“If conflicts become too difficult to manage then putting fossil fuels and renewables under the same roof may not only fail to generate incremental value but it may even destroy value for shareholders. The investment community will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how Aramco manages these challenges, and how the company’s commitment to a sustainable future manifests through its organisational processes and structures, over and above its recent financial commitments,” he concluded.

Ioannis Ioannou

Spend the day with others. Savour and appreciate your time spent with friends and loved ones. You have the opportunity to lead groups of people to higher levels of consciousness. Make sure however that your emotions don’t completely take over your rational mind. Resist the tendency to agree with someone else just to smooth things over.Your heart may be fluttering off in many different directions today, while your brain seems to be in another dimension entirely. Try to keep hold of the reins and not let yourself get paralysed by overwhelming emotions. Today is a good day to communicate your feelings with others.

Your mind may be a bit more cloudy and scattered than usual, so you should work on trying to stay focused and disciplined - especially when it comes to finishing through on projects. There is a great deal of energy at your disposal today, and you should make the most out of every drop. Spend time with friends and communicate your thoughts with others.Your mental capacities will be stronger than usual. You should be confident about your thoughts. Communicate your feelings with others. Use your sound mind to regulate the flightiness of your heart. Your emotions may be fickle and across the board today. Calm them down and give yourself room to breathe.

Be extra social today, and spend some quality time with friends. Communication with others is a key aspect of the day. This includes talking as well as listening. All sorts of group activities are favoured at this time. Be careful, however, not to let your emotions get so tangled up in your head that you can’t think straight and make rational decisions.

Someone may be challenging you today. A recently laid plan may be coming under fire by the strong opinions from others. Be sure that as you react to this energy, you are operating from a level, rational head that is not muddled by a tangle of fickle emotions. Communication is key, and you should look to see how your situation can be improved.

Today is a marvellous day for you. Nurture your fun-loving social side by sharing some of your recent discoveries with friends. Let them know how you feel about the issue. Talk as well as listen. Let your mind escape into a creative mode where you can manifest some of the political and social views that are rattling around in your head.

Your mind is clear today, but this might not be evident, thanks to a barrage of conflicting emotions. People may seem flighty and fickle today - not your style. You like to delve deep and get to the core of the issue. Superficiality doesn’t impress you in the least. Use your detective-like brain to get right to the truth of the matter and try not to let your volatile emotions get in the way of your pursuit for happiness.

Your mind is operating at top notch today, and you should take this opportunity to communicate your thoughts with others. Your emotions however, might be a bit hard to pin down and you may feel them going off in about a billion different directions. Try not to let your feelings confuse the true issues at hand. Use the energy of the day to indulge in lighthearted conversation.

A person or situation might prove to be quite challenging today. This could be a lesson in balance for you. Work to see the other side of the issue, and realize that these lessons are incredibly important for success down the road. Try not to let your emotions cloud the true reality. You may feel like someone is trying to rub you the wrong way.

It may be a bit difficult to find your grounding today, but don’t sweat it. Instead, work to nurture the creative aspect of your mind and fuel it with the passion from your emotions. Communicate your feelings with others and reveal your truly sensitive nature. Try not to get too serious about anything. Keep it light. Be social.

Enjoy the day. You should expect to be in good spirits for most of it. Communication is a key aspect for keeping the energy flow in your favour. Keep things light and inclusive, while allowing your true feelings to emerge. Don’t hold back on the thoughts and emotions that you have been keeping under wraps for some time now.

Bulgarians vote in general election

Donald Trump blamed his party’s conservatives for the defeat of his presidency, holding it responsible for the failed attempt to repeal Obamacare and for weak-ening the broader effort to curb abortions.

Britain will take an unprece-dented step into the unknown on Wednesday with the first formal move towards leaving the European Union, starting a two-year process that has already divided the country.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party

won a regional election yesterday, dealing an early blow to centre-left hopes of ending her more than decade-long reign.

In the Saarland state vote held six months before a

general election, Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) won 40 percent against 30 percent for the Social Democrats (SPD).

Merkel’s right-hand man Peter Altmaier, the chancellery chief-of-staff, said “it’s an outcome that gives us courage”.

Gunfire erupted in a crowded Ohio nightclub

yesterday after a personal dispute boiled over, killing one person and leaving 14 wounded as partygoers scattered into the night, authorities said.

The gunman remained at large following the shooting at the Cameo nightclub in Cincinnati that assistant police chief Paul Neudigate said was packed with revellers.

“There are no indications this incident is terrorism

related,” he said on Twitter. It was unclear how many

shooters were involved. Authorities initially said there were at least two, but Neudigate later tweeted that there was “only one reported shooter at this time, still investigating if others involved.”

The Cincinnati Police Department said there were “15 gunshot victims, one deceased.”

The shooting was believed to have stemmed from a dispute between specific groups of individuals.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s new leader Carrie Lam pledged

yesterday to mend political rifts after winning a vote dismissed as a sham by democracy activists who fear the loss of the city’s cherished freedoms.

The former career civil servant was chosen as next chief executive of the semi-autonomous city by a mainly pro-China committee. She was widely seen as Beijing’s favourite candidate.

Her main rival, ex-finance chief John Tsang who was perceived as a more moderate pro-establishment figure, had a clear lead in opinion polls but trailed in the result.

It was the first leadership vote since mass “Umbrella Movement” rallies in 2014 calling for fully free elections failed to secure reforms.

Pro-democracy activists said none of the candidates truly represented Hong Kong and rejected the vote outright.

Moscow

Thousands of Russians demonstrated across the

country yesterday to protest against corruption, defying bans on the rallies called by prominent Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny -- who was arrested along with scores of others.

Navalny called for the protests after publishing a detailed report this month accusing Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of controlling a property empire through a shadowy network of nonprofit organisations.

The report has been viewed over 11 million times on YouTube, but so far Medvedev has made no comment on the claims.

Navalny, who has announced plans to run for president in next year’s election, has been rallying supporters in major Russian cities in recent weeks.

In Moscow, Navalny called on supporters to walk along

the main Tverskaya street, and people congregated on the nearby squares lined with dozens of police vans and rows of riot officers as a police helicopter hovered overhead.

“We have all seen the movie, it gives specific examples of corruption, and there has been no reaction,” said Nikolai Moisey, a 26-year-old factory worker.

“They steal and they lie but still people will be patient to the end. The protest is a first push for people to start acting.”

Police detained Navalny

afternon as he was walking to the protest, putting him in a police minibus, and the surrounding crowd briefly tried to block it from driving off, shouting “Shame!” and “Let him out!”

“Guys, I am all right, go on along Tverskaya,” Navalny tweeted from the van.

Thousands of people filled Pushkin Square, with some shouting “Russia without Putin”, referring to President Vladimir Putin. Some climbed on lamp posts and monument to poet Alexander Pushkin, shouting “impeachment!”

Moscow police estimated the protest turnout at seven or eight thousand people, making it one of the biggest non-authorised demonstrations in recent years.

Police officers moved to detain protesters and clear the square, with some using truncheons and pepper spray to disperse the crowd. (AFP)

WASHINGTON,

The Empire State Building and United Nations

headquarters in New York joined other iconic buildings and monuments around the world plunging into darkness for sixty minutes on Saturday to mark Earth Hour and draw attention to climate change.

The Eiffel Tower, the Kremlin, the Acropolis in Athens and Sydney’s Opera House also dimmed their lights as millions of people from some 170 countries and territories were expected to take part in Earth Hour, the annual bid to highlight global warming caused by the burning

of coal, oil and gas to drive cars and power plants.

The event, which originated in Sydney, has grown to become a worldwide campaign, celebrated across all continents.

The World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) conservation group, which organizes the event, said great strides had been made in highlighting the dire state of the planet.

Dharamsala

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon took four key wickets to fashion a late comeback for

Australia on an engrossing second day in the decisive fourth Test against India yesterday.

The 29-year-old made the most of a lively track at Dharamsala, which is hosting its

first Test, to return a rich haul of 4-67 in the final session of play.

Fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood (1-40) and Pat Cummins (1-59) also bowled their hearts out during frugal spells to restrict the hosts to 248-6 at stumps.

India trail by 52 runs with four wickets in hand after Australia made 300 in their first knock, largely thanks to a fine 111 from captain Steve Smith.

At stumps Wriddhiman Saha was batting on 10 with Ravindra Jadeja on 16.

With the series in the balance at 1-1, the game’s two top-ranked sides have been locked in a battle of attrition, with neither willing to give an inch.

“I reckon it is an unbelievable feeling to be pretty evenly poised after day two,” Lyon said after the day’s play.

“I know we probably left a few runs out there, but to have India 240-6 odd

after a pretty good day in the field, I am quite happy to be honest.

“Coming over here, everyone wrote us off and to

be in this position in the last Test at 1-1 and the pressure slightly on India is fantastic.”

The Indian batsmen were guilty of squandering good starts in a match they must win to regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

But Lokesh Rahul (60) and Cheteshwar Pujara (57) batted patiently to put on 87 for the second wicket, the best partnership so far for the hosts.

“It’s by far the best wicket we have played on, there’s something in it for the spinners and the fast bowlers as well. The ball kept swinging the whole day,” said Rahul.

“If you spend some time in the middle it’s really good to bat on. All of us got starts but we couldn’t convert.

“But we are happy at the end of the day with 250-odd runs for six wickets. It wasn’t really the worst day for us.”

Australia comeback Ajinkya Rahane, standing in for injured

skipper Virat Kohli, also looked set for a big score but ended up gifting a catch to Smith off Lyon for 46 off 104 balls.

Ravichandran Ashwin (30) was adjudged lbw off Lyon. The all-rounder opted for a review but the ball tracker showed the stumps would have been hit.

Lyon, who had conceded 163 runs while taking just one wicket in the previous drawn Test at Ranchi, remained wicketless in the first two sessions.

But the bowler, whose experience as a curator gave him a sharp understanding of pitches, brought Australia back into the game in the final session through some classic old-fashioned spin.

Lyon’s first victim was Pujara, who was coming into the match on the back of an epic innings of 202 at Ranchi.

Pujara tried to defend but the ball ripped back in to hit the glove and then lob up to short leg, where Peter Handscomb pouched an easy catch. (AFP)

De Kock bats through pain

Hamilton

Quinton de Kock batted through the pain of a damaged finger to bolster South Africa

with a defiant 90 as the deciding Test against New Zealand was evenly poised at the end of day three in Hamilton yesterday.

In the rain disrupted Test, New Zealand were 67 without loss at stumps, with a rejuvenated Tom Latham on 42, in reply to South Africa’s 314.

The injured De Kock and previously out-of-form Latham were the individual stars in the deciding Test with South Africa 1-0 up and New Zealand needing a win to draw the series.

De Kock, playing with damaged ligaments in his right index finger, went to the middle with South Africa 148 for five and he held the innings together while the bottom half of the batting order added a further 166.

South African batting coach Neil McKenzie described de Kock as “a unique player” who needed painkillers to get through the day.

“We’re threatening to get bowled out for around 200 and he comes and gets a really quality 90,” McKenzie said.

Alejandro Valverde completed his second Tour

of Catalonia win yesterday with his third stage win of the seven-day race to top an all Spanish podium from Alberto Contador and Movistar teammate Albert Soler.

Valverde, 36, added to his victories on stage three and five on the 138.7km stage around Barcelona with an eight-lap circuit to finish in 3hr 08min 50sec. Colombian Jarlinson Pantano was second ahead of Frenchman Arthur Vichot in third.

Valverde extended his winning margin over Contador to 1min 03sec with Soler 1min 16sec back.

The scale of Valverde’s win is even more impressive given every Movistar rider was handed a one minute penalty for infringements by Jose Joaquin Rojas in Tuesday’s team time trial.

Movistar had won the time trial until they were penalised for Rojas giving his teammates a push.

“Inside the team we knew it was an injustice,” said Valverde. “They deprived us of our great time trial. I wanted to win (before) but I wanted to win even more after what happened.”

Victory continues a stellar start to the season for Valverde after also beating Contador by a second to the Tour of Andalusia. (AFP)

Miami

Injury-plagued world No. 5 Milos Raonic

pulled out of the Miami Open yesterday with a recurrence of a hamstring injury, leaving the Canadian star saying he would not return until he is 100 percent fit.

Raonic originally suffered the injury in the

semi-final at Delray Beach and was forced to forfeit the final against American Jack Sock. He then missed this month’s Masters event at Indian

Wells.T h e 26-year-

old returned to action in Miami on Friday with a win over Serbian Viktor Troicki but said his injury had flared up again.

“It is the same muscle in the hamstring it got progressively worse after my first round and after practising yesterday (Saturday), it was not possible to compete today without putting myself at significant risk,” he told reporters.

Raonic was due to face American qualifier Jared Donaldson.

His exit means three of the top five players in the world have had to sit out Miami due to injury. World number one Andy Murray and number two Novak Djokovic pulled out before the tournament.

Raonic has struggled with injuries for several months and said he had not been 100 percent fully fit for a tournament since last year’s

Wimbledon where he reached the final, before losing to Andy Murray.

“It hasn’t been fun the last seven months. I haven’t played one tournament form start to finish healthy. My goal for this tournament was to at least finish it healthy.”

After Wimbledon, Raonic was hampered by cramps at the U.S. Open and the same issue caused him to miss Canada’s Davis Cup match with Chile in September.

A month later, he withdrew from the China Open before his scheduled semi-final due to an ankle injury and he had to pull out a semi-final at the Paris Masters in November with a quadriceps tear.

Looking ahead to the clay court season, Raonic said that he was not going to play again until he was fully fit. (AFP)

Germany leaked their first goal since July, but still

extended their perfect record in World Cup qualifiers to five straight wins following Sunday’s 4-1 victory away to Azerbaijan with Andre Schuerrle scoring twice.

First-half goals by Schuerrle, Thomas Mueller and Mario Gomez put the world champions 3-1 up at the break, although Azerbaijan midfielder Dimitrij Nazarov, who plays in Germany, had netted an early equaliser to the delight of the home crowd.

It was the first goal Germany had conceded following seven previous clean sheets -- a national team record -- dating back to their 2-0 defeat in Marseille against France in the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

However, Schuerrle added a late second goal to reward the faith shown in him by Germany’s head coach Joachim Loew despite a series of below- p a r displays for

Borussia Dortmund. The away win means

Germany stay top of Group C with five wins from five, scoring 20 goals and having now conceded just once.

Germany were near full strength, but with captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer out with the calf injury, Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno made only his fourth appearance between the posts.

Juventus’ defensive midfielder Sami Khedira took over the captain’s armband in Neuer’s absence.

The world champions went ahead with the first clear chance. Toni Kroos spotted space on the left wing for Jonas Hector to whip in a cross which Schuerrle stabbed home with 19 minutes gone.

It was Schuerrle’s first Germany goal since his hat-trick in the 7-0 thrashing of minnows Gibraltar in June 2015.

However, Azerbaijan fought back and drew level with 31 minutes gone.

Nazarov, who plays for Bundesliga second division

club Erzgebirge Aue, finished a counter-attack with a superb strike. It was the first time the German defence has been beaten in five World Cup qualifiers.

But it stayed 1-1 for only five minutes as Schuerrle restored the lead by poaching possession and snuffing out a Azerbaijan counter attack.

He placed his pass in behind the defence for Mueller to convert on 36 minutes.

It was Mueller’s fifth goal in five 2018 qualifiers this season, although he has netted just two Bundesliga goals for Bayern Munich this

season. Gomez then made his height count as the 1.89m (six foot, two inches) striker outjumped Azerbaijan’s right-back Magomed Mirzabekoto, 1.68m (five foot, five inches), to head home Joshua Kimmich’s cross on 45 minutes.

Mesut Ozil replaced Gomez for the final 30 minutes but the tempo dropped with Khedira going close when his shot was saved with 15 minutes left.

Schuerrle sealed the win on 81 minutes by converting another good cross from the left by Hector. (AFP)

England ease past Lithuania

London

Jermain Defoe adorned his international comeback with

a goal as England toiled to a 2-0 victory over Lithuania in a forgettable World Cup qualifier at Wembley yesterday.

Defoe, 34, was making his first England appearance since November 2013, having been recalled by manager Gareth Southgate, and he marked his return with the opening goal midway through the second half.

Substitute Jamie Vardy added a second goal as England tightened their grip on first place in UEFA qualifying Group F in Southgate’s first home game as permanent manager.

His side are now the last team in European qualifying yet to have conceded a goal.

Defoe’s strike, the Sunderland veteran’s 20th in 56 caps, was an obvious high point and second-half substitute Marcus Rashford delivered an impressive cameo.

But the stubbornly unadventurous nature of Lithuania’s approach to the game, which made for a soporific match, meant there was little to shout about from an England perspective.

The game was preceded by the laying of wreaths and a minute’s silence in honour of the four people killed and over 50 injured in Wednesday’s terror attack in London.

Having tested out a 3-4-2-1 system in the mid-week 1-0 friendly defeat in Germany, Southgate reverted to a back four and his side were quickly

on the front foot, with Adam Lallana prominent.

The Liverpool midfielder saw a deflected shot caught by Ernestas Setkus and then produced a clever pass down the inside-right channel for Defoe, whose shot was blocked by the Lithuania goalkeeper.

Defoe’s penalty-box cunning was one of the reasons Southgate picked him over Vardy and he vindicated his manager’s call by putting England ahead in the 22nd minute.

Valskis let-off Raheem Sterling slipped past Egidijus Vaitkunas on the left before rolling in a cross that Defoe planted into the net for his first international goal since March 2013. He threatened to notch a 21st England goal moments later, thudding a shot wide from range.

Joe Hart, captain for the day, had been a virtual bystander, but the England goalkeeper was almost embarrassed in first-half stoppage time.

The assistant referee’s flag stayed down despite Nerijus Valskis appearing to be blatantly offside and the Lithuanian forward managed to head the ball past Hart, obliging John Stones to hack clear.

As England continued to labour in the second half, they were given another let-off when Vykintas Slivka was unable to find a way past Hart with a free shot from just inside the box.(AFP)

Sebastian Vettel out-manoeuvred Lewis Hamilton and the world champion

Mercedes team with a stunning victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne yesterday.

Vettel won by almost 10 seconds from Hamilton and Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas in a commanding victory of tactics and superior speed around the Albert Park street circuit.

Ferrari hadn’t won in Melbourne since Kimi Raikkonen’s 2007 victory and it was Vettel’s second triumph in Australia after winning the 2011 race with Red Bull.

It was also a major fillip for the fledgling season and the new generation of quicker cars after Ferrari’s superior pre-season test times as they chase their first world constructors’ title since 2008.

The victory was the German four-time world champion’s fourth for Ferrari and his first since Singapore in 2015 and his 43rd career win.

‘Bit of luck’ “A title challenge is a long way ahead.

For now we are just over the moon at the start we have made here today,” Vettel said. “I was not entirely happy with my start, there was a bit of wheel spin, but I was trying to keep the pressure on to give the message that we are here to fight.

“There was a bit of luck that Lewis came out in traffic.”

Ferrari got the better of Mercedes in the sole round of tyre changes which ultimately decided the race.

Hamilton’s early stop meant he rejoined

behind the Red Bull of Max Verstappen w h i c h a l l o w e d Vettel to open up a decisive gap at the head of the field.

“A big congratulations to Ferrari and Sebastian,” Hamilton said.

“In the race, I struggled with the tyres. I had to stop very early and I got stuck behind one of the Red Bulls, but that’s just the way it goes.”

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was fourth with Verstappen fifth ahead of Brazilian Felipe Massa in the Williams.

Australia’s big hope Daniel Ricciardo had a h e a r t b r e a k i n g day with gear box problems ending his race on the 29th lap after he was forced to start from pit lane when his Red Bull car broke down on the warm-up lap. (AFP)
