Pachga (Almanac) Calendar 2016 Panchngam: Panchngam provides five basic elements of astrology, Tithi (lunar day or time taken by moon to move 12 degrees), vaara (a day from sunrise to sunrise), Nakshtra (the Zodiac constellation in which the moon is found on particular day), yoga (half-day) and karana (angle between sun & moon). These are the main aspects calculated according to the Solar, Lunar and the Earth positions. These five elements play an important role in calculating the muhurthas (auspicious days) for any Hindu rituals. There are three prevalent methods of calculation for Panchngam used in different parts of India. Souramanam (Solar calendar - prevalent in Kerala and Tamilnadu), Chandramanam (lunar Calendar - prevalent in Andhra, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and other states of North India), Baarhaspatyamaana (Jupiterian calendar -which is said to be prevalent in North India).

Panchngam in India and US: The lunar movements calculate Tithi and Nakshtra, the main angas of Panchngam. When one Tithi or Nakshatram begins and ends, it happens at the same instance all over the world, which is called the Universal time. Based on the time zones, the Tithi and Nakshatram will begin/end at different local timings in different parts of the world. Since India has a little variation in terms of sunrise/sunset, Panchngam computed for one area of the country is generally applicable to the other parts of the country as well. But when it comes to other parts of the world, same universal time should be translated into the corresponding local time in terms of the longitude and latitude. As North Americas PST is 13 hours past Indian Standard Time, it is not appropriate to use the calendar, prepared for Indian local time. Keeping these aspects in mind, our astrologers and scholars prepared Panchngam calculated for our local time, i.e. PST & PDT. In the current Calendar we have put all efforts to provide as many details as possible. For further details like Muhurthas, please consult our scholars, personally or through email. Daily use of this calendar helps everyone to understand and monitor the prevailing planetary forces of the day. Accuracy of the above mentioned Panchngam attributes depending upon Moon's motion are more crucial for the reliability of Panchngam. Because Moon is the fastest among all the heavenly entities shown in traditional Panchngas, Tithi, Nakshatra, Rasi, Yoga, and Karana depend on Moon's motion. There are three popular meanings of the term Panchngam. Vedic astrology meaning is "five attributes" of the day. The five attributes are:

Tithi: Ending Moment (EM) of elongation of the Moon, the lunar day, the angular relationship between Sun and Moon (True Moon minus True Sun). One Tithi equals 12 degree difference between Moon and Sun.

Nakshatra: EM of asterism of the day, that is, the stellar mansion in which Moon is located for an observer on Earth. One Nakshatra equals 13 degrees: 20 minutes. There are 27 Nakshatra in 360 degrees.

Rasi: The zodiac signs or rasi - EM of the sidereal sign of the zodiac for the Moon.

Tithi: The tithi is the longitude of the Moon minus that of the Sun. First tithi (Prathama) begins when tithi is 0 and ends when it is 12; 12 to 24 is dvitiya, 24 to 36 is Tritiya etc. 168 to 180 is Poornima, 180 to 192 is Dark fortnight Prathama 192 to 204 is Dvitiya.etc. 348 to 360 is Amvsya. So, there are 30 tithis -15 are called Suddha (Shukla) Paksha (Bright fortnight or waxing phase) the other 15 Bahula (Krishna) Paksha (Dark fortnight or waning phase). The tithi of a day is usually taken to be the tithi current at sunrise on that day. Since the moment of the sunrise is not the same at all places it is to be noted that occasionally a tithi current at sunrise at one place may not be current at sunrise at another place. It is also possible for a particular tithi to be current at sunrise on two successive days. So when two successive days have the same tithi associated with them, the 1st day is called Tridina. It is also likely that a tithi may begin after sunrise and end before the next sunrise. In such a case a tithi is skipped over and that day is called AVAMA. The concept of good timing is provided by this calendar and one can take advantage of auspicious moments by avoiding when the creative forces of this planetary system are on the wane. Note on the Tithi and Nakshatra ending times: If a tithi or a nakshatram ends before sunrise on a particular day, then it is shown in the calendar with 24 hour format with previous days time. For example, if a tithi ending time is 6:15am and the sunrise on that day is at 6:45am, then it is shown as 30:15 in the calendar.

A Message from the Founder, Chairman and Chief Priest of VEDA I am very happy to wish a healthy, prosperous and happy New Year 2016 to all my dear and near devotees of VEDA, in the bay area as well as from all parts of the country. With the grace of Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy and blessings from all other deities at the VEDA temple in Melpeetha Nagara Punya Kshetram (Milpitas, CA), 2015 was another great year for the temple, with the devotees from nationwide coming forward to participate in the temple activities with great devotion. Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamys blessings will always be there with the local artists and various local organizations, as the temple became a great platform for local arts, like dancing, singing, language learning, spiritual classes, yoga classes, meditation classes, and Vedam classes on every Wednesday evening from several years. With the support from all of the devotees, the second phase of the temple construction is actively ongoing, which includes the inner sanctums and shikharams for all deities at the temple. We are planning to perform mini-kumbhabhishekam for the inner shikharams for all deities in the month of February. By participating in Kumbhabhisheka, one can attain name, fame, along with accumulating prosperity and progeny. It is rare to witness and participate in such Kumbhabhishekam in a life time and it is the dharma (courtesy) as a human being to utilize such opportunity. For Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy, we hope to perform the Maha Kumbhabhishekam with Maha (Pradhaana) Shikharam in the next one and half year. Our wish is for the devotees to be able to see the Maha Shikharam visible from the nearby freeways, which will protrude up to approximately 20 feet on the top of the ceiling. Our puranas say - watching the shikharam relieves the devotees of worries. Current VEDA priests include Jagadish Sharma, Nagendra Sharma, Sivarama Sharma, Mrutyunjaya Sharma, Phani Raja Kumar and one more priest Pavan Kumar Sharma who makes maha prasadam. We are planning to bring two more priests to the temple soon. All of the priests are instrumental in temples success with their knowledge, excellent work and coordination and they have been doing a tremendous job. I express my humble gratitude to the current president Sri Mandadi Venkata Reddy and office bearers, who are helping the temple to run smoothly. Hard work, commitment and dedication shown by several new and existing volunteers and the executive committee members are instrumental in the tremendous growth of the temple. I also convey my heartfelt wishes to Dr. Srinivas Vadrevu and family, who helped with the calendar preparation with dedication. We recently established six board of directors for VEDA. We hope that this will bring added benefit to the temple. I pray to Lord Sri Satyanayana Swamy to provide blessings to all of the above. While thanking all the devotees for all their unwavering effort and support extended so far for this noble cause, we also request all devotees to provide similar support by donating generously so that we can take the temple to the next stage such as Shikharam construction. Year by year, we are seeing increasing number of devotees at the temple, which is a great sign of prosperity of the temple. At this exact moment where we are thinking about expanding the temple to accommodate the growth, it is fortunate that the opposite building to the temple came up for sale and we are glad to announce that the temple is purchasing the additional 10,000 square feet building, which will help expand the temple and serve as a community hall where we can host special events and private party programs. My humble request to daily devotees is to help spread the word and propagate our dharma. We still need the generous support and participation from all the devotees and I request all of you to come forward and participate in the shikhara construction and temple property expansion. This calendar provides vital and important details like Tithi, Varam, Nakshatram, Varjyam, Rahukalam, Durmuhurtam, Eclipse timings and star predictions required for us in our daily life and for observing our rituals. In addition, we also provided auspicious days and timings like excellent and average. It is always advised to consult your family priest or astrologer for muhrthas for important samskras like weddings, upanayanam, smantam, gruha pravesam, etc. Our VEDA temple can also provide such services according to your requirements. My ambition is always to provide priestly services to the devotees, on behalf of VEDA, with the unique combination of vedic chants and puja services to make you happy and become prosperous and successful in life. I request you to please let me know by email if you see any mistakes or omissions in this calendar. We will make all efforts to communicate the corrections to all the Devotees.

A Message from the VEDA Temple President Our family feels blessed for me as being selected as the President and we would like to express thanks for support and guidance provided by Chairman, Board of Directors, committee members and devotee community. This happened after a gap of two years, I was the Treasurer of VEDA from 2009 to 2013 and we had accomplished purchasing the current building in 2010, reconstruction of the temple, and organizing Pranaprathista (consecration of the deities). Once it was announced in June 2015, a new office team was formed with Sri Padmanabham Tadepalli garu as Vice President, Sri Santhosh Karnewar garu as Treasurer, Mahadev Kolluru as Secretary, and Gopala Ajjarapu as Jt. Secretary. Since June 2015 we have all major festivals coming up in next months and initiated planning and preparation. Starting with Ganesh chaturthi celebrations, in September we had 9 days Ganapthi Navaratri event starting with installing Vidya Ganesh being instructed by Vyasa Maharshi idols which has attracted large number of devotees. The celebrations culminated with a yearly event of going to SFO to do the traditional Ganesha Nimmajana which was attended by a record number of devotees. In October, we had 9 days Devi Navaratri celebrations, and in this year's attractions, we had daily alankaram deities preserved for all days, ending with Vijaya Dashami. We were able to see all 9 alankarams on the last day. During these festival season, we held many cultural programs with the participants from the local communities and religious discourses by eminent scholars from India. In November/December we had Kartika Maasa with daily Siva Abhishekams and multiple GSNPs during the month. All events were successfully held and were attended daily by large number of devotees. Under the able guidance of Guruvu Brahmasri Marepalli Naga Venkata Sastri and our very professional and artistic team of priests, the temple has been providing the religious services to an increasing number of devotees. VEDA's growth is promising, as it attracts a high number of devotees to visit the temple on weekdays and weekends making this temple a great religious center. Since the new kitchen was in operation from June 2015, and that we have a new cooking priest and along with EC members and volunteers support, we are able to scale up to prepare and serve food to the devotee community. However, as a divine surprise, an opportunity has come up to purchase the adjacent building at a sale price of $2,070,000. VEDA has accepted to avail the space for holding religious family events and to provide opportunities for community activities (spiritual classes, yoga and meditation classes, dance, singing) to take place. With support and approval of Chairman, Board of Directors, Officer team and EC members, we have entered into a Purchase agreement on Aug 24th 2015 with a 60-day contingency period. We quickly initiated the Phase -III VEDA Expansion Program, soliciting donations towards the new purchase. VEDA devotees responded once again with great devotion and dedication for VEDA growth. Till date we have received donations up to 50% of the down payment ($550,000). Today 10th Dec 2015, before this message going to print, the status of the new building purchase is: we received bank funding approval for refinance of current 473-475 building and new loan for building purchase. On Nov 24th, contingencies were removed and we are currently in escrow having 45 days to close the purchase. I wish to thank first VEDA devotees, volunteers and donors for the participation and spreading good message across the Bay area community over the last 8 years. We also recognize and are blessed with continuous support of volunteers, spending their time to support daily operations in various areas like kitchen food preparation, food serving, hundi collections, front desk, religious events preparations and decoration, flowers procurement, garlands preparation and facility maintenance. As you have seen the progress in construction of Sikharams for the 7 inner Sanctums (Vijaya Ganesha, Siva, Karthikeya, Anjaneya, Durga Devi, Saraswati Devi and Kanyaka Parameshwari) and shilpi's works coming to an end by Feb 2016, Brahma Sri MNV Sastri garu has fixed the dates Feb 18,19,20 2016 to perform Kumbhaabhishekam for all 7 inner shrines and installing Kalashamas on each sanctum at VEDA temple. Kumbhaabhishekam is a rare event to conduct and participate in a life time, so we request all devotees to attend this grand event. Wish everyone and their family a Happy and Prosperous New year 2016!

Melpeetham VEDA devotees offer themselves as puja pushpams to the Lotus feet of Lord Rama Satyanarayana Swamy. VEDA temple has become more than a religious place. Under the Vedic Presidence and Chancellery of Guruvugaru Brahmasri. Marepalli Naga Venkata Sastry garu, VEDA has become a Vedic, Devotional and Cultural University. It has been mentioned in Sastras that a Teacher is called a Kulapati (Chancellor), if he feeds, provides shelter and teaches at least 10000 students. I feel proud to be part of such blessed students. It is hard to find such a Vedic Sanctum far away from the Veda Bhoomi, Bharata Bhoomi. We are blessed to have it here in Milpitas only due to Sri Ramaa Satyanarayana Swamys Divine grace. (You dont find noble elements in every mountain, except in Meru; not all Elephants have Pearls in their tusks, only Elephants in the Himalayas have; not everybody in this world is virtuous, can raise above the desires and get satisfied, very very rare; not all forests have Sandalwood, except those in Malaya Parvatham).

Similarly, it is rare to find a great temple like VEDA and a great teacher like Sri. Venkata Sastry garu.

A Memo from Elderly Couple

On the eve of entering into Great Year 2016, it is our proud Privilege to sit in the Assembly of Sri Satyanarayana Swamy Devastanam-Milpitas CA. Having proclaimed ourselves earlier by resolving to ourselves known to the community that We Shall Sit Under One Roof to have Best Wishes to ourselves; under the Chairmanship of Sri Marepalli Naga Venkta Sastry/ The Community of VEDA MANTRAM with enormous growth potentials under Vedic Chants shall have Eternal Existence with inherent potentialities to grow SUO MOTO year after year. And with this spirit in ourselves; we shall all restore for ourselves without fear or favor that we shall all have a potential year 2016 for ourselves to push through further with the Communities Assistance prevailing to have an upper hand at all costs. A further few words which every reader fortunate enough to share shall understand: 1) that as years go by and the momentum gains; it shall be our duty to Provide for Ourselves the wider area nearer us to compress ourselves to listen to 'Vedic chants' and Religious Culture for us in this Great Land which has wider roof; 2) That as we, elders get into generation gaps the need of the hour is much more to get into a culture permitting inheritance by progeny to get more deeper, as drilling into the Rock of Background - prevailing atmosphere becomes more and more difficult; 3) That our humbling experiences portrayed before Lord Satyanarayana Swamy and Associates, shall see new light under one shelter: Assembling all of us who present themselves voluntarily or by DIVINE FORCE ; Shall have new Dimensions; Opening new pages in our own lives and the lives of our children further and further; 4) That we shall prove that we are more fortunate to strictly adhere to all HINDU TRADITIONS AND CULTURE which followed us when we entered this Great Land- to be envious so judged; 5) That the further growth factors under the Chief Priest with his Associates shall confer the un proclaimed dormant dreams in the individuals that assemble under whatever occasion - so styled to have an impetus and self-generated energy with fuel provided by Devasthanam - to steer through; 6) That more and more INNOVATIVE activities which shall be grown under this ROOF shall see the LIGHT further ahead; 7) That 2016 Calendar / As Presented-which you hold will steer you through ; year after year to spread new thoughts under the present GURU and Others that take charge under him to enchant those present to have their chosen BLISS. We shall all push through within the purview of limited sphere of permissible attitude prevailing on the part of each and every one present; Within the GROWTH MODE; And that Sri M.N.V Sastri: Shall so proceed in 2016. Calculations for the Calendar performed by Brahma Sri Marepalli Naga Venkata Sastri garu. Calendar design and preparation by Sri Srinivas Vadrevu. Photography by Sri Vijay Ram Chemudupati.

This calendar provides auspicious times for various activities like starting business, buying various things, joining new jobs, matrimonial, births, closing deals and various day to day activities. It is always advised to consult your family priest or astrologer or the VEDA temple for muhrthas for above and important samskras like weddings, upanayanam, sman tam, gruha pravesam etc. Since rhuklam is not counted as a dosha in astrology, it is not considered for calculating auspicious times in this calendar. It is advised to observe rhuklam, varjyam and durmuhrtam for the watchful.
