• Read Chief Examiner reports on awarding organisations web sites

• Make sure you know what is required at the level being assessed and at the levels below and above

• Use other related qualifications to flesh out the level. Eg Key skills, Core skills

• Practice the assessment – do a ‘mock’

• Use the mark scheme. Get learners to mark their own or each other’s responses

• Teach time management. Get learners used to how much time is available. Make sure they leave time for checking

• Teach them to read questions carefully and answer what is asked

• Get candidates to use mark allocations as a guide to how much detail is needed

• Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water – use what has worked effectively with key skills
