Springtime is on its way. With warmer weather comes an increase in time spent outside for both people and their pets. It is very important to remember that while playing outside you should be familiar with the plants which your pet may come into contact. Poisonous plants come in a variety of species, from beautiful tropical plants to wild mushrooms that may pop up unknowingly in your yard. If new plants are going to be added to your yard, research should always be done first to insure that they do not have the potential to be toxic. Now is also a good time to do an inventory of the plants that are already growing there, and be certain that they do not pose an unknown risk to your pet.
The list of all toxic plants is a very long list, but we will go over a few of the plants that our pets may commonly encounter. Sago palms, azaleas, elephant ears, oleander, and lantana are all plants that are commonly used for landscaping. All of these plants are considered toxic to varying degrees. Sago palms and oleander are extremely lethal, while elephant ears and lantana generally cause mild gastrointestinal distress. Mistletoe and a few varieties of wild mushrooms are also toxic and should always be removed from

Flee from the Fleas! You’ve seen them- tiny, quick creatures that scurry through your pet’s fur, feasting on their blood and causing painful itching- so bad that your pet scratches a raw spot in seeking relief! If you observe your pet scratching and aren’t sure if fleas are the cause, give Bit & Spur Animal Hospital a call. Our knowledgable staff will be happy to give advice on an effective flea control for your pet and house
your yard if possible. Properly identifying wild mushrooms is very difficult. It is always safer to remove all mushrooms, rather than attempting to identify the species.
House plants can also create problems, especially for cats and mischievous puppies. Day lilies are extremely toxic to cats and should never be kept within reach of your feline companion. Most other varieties of lilies, along with holly, philodendron, lucky bamboo, dieffenbachia, and many others are also toxic and should be kept out of reach of all pets. Continued on page 3

It’s early October as I write, and fall migration is beginning to wane as we ease into the winter season. The first legitimate cold front of the season passed through our state at the end of September, sweeping away several days of unsettled weather. As might be expected, there was an uptick in migrant songbirds appearing at our local parks, backyard bird feeders and the coastal migrant traps – such familiar places at Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island. It seems an eternity since spring was here, but at times feels as though it was only yesterday.
Spring migration is fairly short in duration, with the biggest thrust of birds moving through Alabama between mid-March and early May. It can be likened to a spectacular mad dash, where the winners are those males who arrive first on the breeding grounds to establish territories and begin the ardent task of attracting a mate. The females arrive not long afterwards, seeking a mate who has all the right qualities and a territory with suitable habitat to ensure a successful breeding season.

managing stress
Stress Management Techniques
Stress management can help you to either
remove or change the source of stress, alter the
way you view a stressful event, lower the impact
that stress might have on your body, and teach
you alternative ways of coping.
Self-help books or stress management courses
are also helpful in learning stress management
techniques. You can also seek the help of a
counselor or psychotherapist for personal
development or therapy sessions. In addition,
therapies which help you relax, such as aroma-
therapy or reflexology, may be beneficial.
Caffeine - if your consumption of coffee and other
drinks which contain caffeine is high, cut down.
Nutrition - eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
Make sure you have a healthy and balanced diet.
Time - make sure you set aside some time each
day just for yourself. Use that time to organize your
life, relax, and pursue your own interests.
Breathing - there are some effective breathing
techniques which will slow down your system and
help you relax.
Talk - talk to your family, friends, work colleagues
and your boss. Express your thoughts and worries.
Seek professional help - if the stress is affecting
the way you function; go and see your doctor.
Heightened stress for prolonged periods can be
bad for your physical and mental health.
Relaxation techniques - meditation, massage,
or yoga have been known to greatly help people
with stress.
MedicinesDoctors will not usually prescribe medications
for coping with stress, unless the patient has an
underlying illness, such as depression or some
type of anxiety. If that is the case, the doctor is
actually treating a mental illness. In such cases, an
antidepressant may be prescribed. Bear in mind
that there is a risk that all the medication will do is
mask the stress, rather than help you deal and cope
with it.

AvoidSalty Foods. Salt increases the amount of water in the blood, and then the increased volume of blood raises blood pressure. The best way to avoid excess salt is to lower the amount of processed foods in your diet. Almost 80% of an average person’s daily salt intake comes from processed foods.
Excess Alcohol. Too much alcohol can increase blood pressure. Doctors recommend two or fewer drinks a day for men and one or less for women.
Smoking. It damages blood vessels and speeds up the hardening of arteries.

INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE
Can You Say Estuary? An estuary (es-choo-er-ee) is where freshwater from inland is mixed with saltwater from the sea. Estuaries are home to some of the most sensitive and ecologically important habitats on earth. They provide sanctuary for many species of birds and serve as breeding grounds for many ocean fish, including shrimp, crabs, red fish and mullet. Helen Wood Park is located within the Mobile Bay estuary.
Mobile Bay By the NumbersDrains: 43,662 square milesReceives: 62,000 cubic feet of freshwater per secondAverage Depth: 10 feetLength, North to South: 32 milesWidest Point: 23 milesWidth at City of Mobile: 10 miles
The Dog River WatershedDog River and its tributaries drain most of Mobile, Alabama and are a “sub-watershed” of the greater Mobile Bay watershed.
Dog River Watershed By the Numbers Area: 95 square miles Location: 56 percent City of Mobile, 44 percent Mobile County Waterways include: pristine streams, concrete lined drainage ditches, and tidal channels
No DumpingThese markers are placed throughout the Dog River Watershed to remind citizens that storm drains flow directly into the creeks and streams that feed Dog River. Any trash, chemicals, motor oil, yard clippings, or other things that are allowed to reach a storm drain will end up in a tributary or Dog River and affect the fish and wildlife that depend upon the river for life.
Rivers, creeks and streams from over 65 percent of the state of Alabama and portions of Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee flow into Mobile Bay and mix with saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico. This makes Mobile Bay watershed the sixth largest in the nation by area and the fourth largest in North America by freshwater flow. Wind and tides deliver salty water into the bay from the Gulf of Mexico. Due to the shallow nature ofMobile Bay the “saltiness” or salinity of the water changes constantly.
That Mobile Bay is Where Five Major Rivers Meet the Gulf of Mexico
Did You Know...
Gulf of Mexico
Helen Wood Park is located on the margin of two even smaller watersheds included in the Mobile Bay Watershed. Some of the water that runs off the park flows downhill directly into the bay. The remaining runoff flows towards the west into marshes adjacent and contributing to Dog River, which flow into the bay directly south of the park.

you are now looking at a tidal marsh?
Did You Know...All plants that live in salt marshes have developed special abilities to withstand constant flooding and to keep salt out of their tissues. However, more plant species can live in the brackish water of Helen Wood Park than in the saltier marshes further south.
As you walk through the park, you will find black needlerush (Juncus roemerianus), and smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) that are typical of Gulf Coast marshes. You’ll see a large stand of bulrush (Schoenoplectus robustus and Schoenoplectus pungens), duck potato (Sagittaria latifolia),
southern wild rice (Zizaniopsis miliacea), arrowhead (Sagittaria lancifolia), pickerel weed (Pontederia cordata), and marsh hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos). All these different plants provide food and habitat for the marsh’s many animals.
Look a little closer, and you will see that the marsh is teeming with animal life, both in and out of the water.
Fiddler crabs (Uca pugnax and pugilator) live in burrows they dig along the edge of the marsh. They get their common name from the shape of the one extremely large front claw of the male fiddler crabs.
Periwinkle snails (Littoraria irrorata) graze on the algae living on the grass leaves, and they climb up its stalks to avoid both high tidal waters and blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus), who like to eat them.
Grasshoppers (Orchelium fidicinum) graze on the upper portion of marsh grass leaves.
Animals in the Marsh
Redfish
Great Blue Heron
Can you spot these marsh birds? • Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
• Green Heron (Butorides virescens)
• Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)
• White Ibis (Eudocimus albus)
What’s in the water? The richness of salt marsh habitat makes it a nursery for fish and other aquatic species.
Here are some of the fish and shellfish you might find at the marsh’s edge:
• White trout (Cynoscion arenarius)• Redfish (Sciaenops ocellatus) • Ground mullet (Mentiairrhus americanus)• Speckled trout (Cynoscion nebulosus)• Brown and white shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus), (Penaeus setiferus)• Oysters (Crassostrea virginica)• Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus)
Shrimp
Marshes are transition zones between bodies of water, like Mobile Bay, and uplands, like pine or hardwood forests. A tidal marsh is one kind of wetland. Wetlands are formed by three differentthings: water, soil, and plants. The plants and animals that live in this marsh must be able to handle the unique conditions created by the always-changing water and tides of Mobile Bay.
An ecosystem includes plants and animals that depend on each other for food, shelter, and survival. The marsh you seearound you is an example of one of the most productive and beneficial ecosystems on the planet.

“(Pornography) is like a drug and impacts the brain in the same area as alcohol
and drug addiction. (Your book) is a very good and much needed reference for
Christian parents.” — Pat Guyton, Executive Director, Child Advocacy Center
“I felt relief and promise (reading your chapter on living with loss). Your words are
true and the biblical accounts are comforting and so helpful. Grief is a process, it is
something (that must be dealt with) every second.” — Linda Bearden, high school teacher and mother
“I learned from (reading your chapter on living with loss) and am pleased to have
contributed in a small way. I found the message informative and woven together
well. When writing to a bereaved parent...the most important thing is to stress how
devastating the loss is, the grief work must be done, weaving loss into everyday life
and lastly, learning to reinvest your love.”— Mary Jane Harbin, speaker and advocate, and founder of Allison’s House,
a grief counseling center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
