    Brief Summary:

The Book of Psalms is a collection of prayers,

poems, and hymns that focus the worshiper's

thoughts on God in praise and adoration. Parts of

this book were used as a hymnal in the worshipservices of ancient Israel. The musical heritage of

the psalms is demonstrated by its title. It comes

from a Greek word which means "a song sung to

the accompaniment of a musical instrument."

How God Intervened to the People

For all of the vanities described in the Book ofEcclesiastes, the answer is Christ. Accordingto Ecclesiastes 3:17, God judges the righteous and thewicked, and the righteous are only those who are in Christ(2 Corinthians 5:21). God has placed the desire for eternity

in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11) and has provided the Wayto eternal life through Christ (John 3:16). We are remindedthat striving after the worlds wealth is not only vanitybecause it does not satisfy (Ecclesiastes 5:10), but even ifwe could attain it, without Christ we would lose our soulsand what profit is there in that (Mark 8:36)? Ultimately, every disappointment and vanity described in Ecclesiasteshas its remedy in Christ, the wisdom of God and the onlytrue meaning to be found in life.

    INTRODUCTION

    .

King Solomon is the author of this eight chapter love Song in approximately900 BC. It was probably written before his spiritual decline (1 Kings 11:3-4).

The two primary sections of the Song are Song 1-4 and Song 5-8.

The first four chapters of the Song focus on the Bride understanding andenjoying her inheritance in Christ. These chapters emphasize how God views anddesires her.The last four chapters focus on Jesus inheritance in the Bride. We seeksomething from Him, but He also seeks something from us. He wants us to loveHim with all our heart (Mt. 22:37). The focus of the book completely shifts in themiddle (4:16-5:1).

THE THREE MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE BOOK1.King Solomon: in the spiritual interpretation he is a picture of the triumphantresurrected Jesus Christ who is King of Kings.

1.Shulamite maiden: in the spiritual interpretation she is a picture of the Brideof Christ. She is introduced as a young maiden who grows up to become a Bridein mature partnership with King Jesus. The Shulamite is mentioned once by

name (6:13). She lived in Shunam (north of Jezreel).

1.Daughters of Jerusalem: in the spiritual interpretation they speak of sincereyet spiritually immature believers. They look to the Shulamite for answers onhow to grow close to the King. They are not an actual group that we can identifyin history (but personify immature believers)

    INTRODUCTION

In the Hebrew Bible the title of this book is "The Song of Songs." The Septuagintand Vulgate translators adopted this title.

The Latin word for song is canticum from which we get the word Canticles, another title for this book.

Some English translations have kept the title "Song of Songs, but many have

changed it to "Song of Solomon"based on 1:1.

The Vulgatewas a popular Bible translation written in the 4th century byJerome who translated the Scripture into Latin so that the common people couldunderstand it.In the Vulgate, the Song of Solomon is called the Canticles.

    VERSES FROM THE BOOK

I am dark (in heart), but lovely (to God)my own vineyard (heart) I have not kept.(Song 1:5-6)

The paradox of our faith is that we are dark in our heart yet we are lovely toGod. Both truths must be held in tension to understand who we are before God.Some emphasize how sinful we are (darkness of our heart) and others emphasizehow beautiful we are to God (lovely in Christ).

The Book of Wisdom is also entitled The Wisdom of Solomon. The author's purpose was to strengthen the faith of his fellow

Jews in Alexandria. Living in the midst of pagans, the Jewish community was in

frequent contact with all the elements of the new society thatwas the Hellenistic world.

Conquests in science were opening up to people the beauty andmystery of the world around them.

A variety of religious and philosophical systems offered wisdomor salvation or a view on the real meaning of life.

There existed the new cosmopolitan and individualisticmentality, skepticism, and dissatisfaction with traditional ideas.

It was a time of crisis for faith, which some Jews hadabandoned, replacing it with pagan religions, secularphilosophies, or their own superficial versions of those; otherJews were in danger of following their example.
