"We're heading to Belmont," O'Neill said, adding that Nyquist will take a van ride to New York May 23. "As long as he continues to show good energy and does well, we'll try this again in three weeks. The plan was to point to the Triple Crown races—all three—and ideally win all three, but I thought he ran a really gutsy race and I just wanted to make sure he looked good this morning before committing to go to the Belmont."

Even in defeat, O'Neill was his usual upbeat self, and took ownership of Nyquist's dueling trip with Uncle Lino on the front end and the fast fractions during the Preakness.

"Even the great Secretariat got beat (five) times," O'Neill said. "They're not machines, as much as he seemed like a machine, being undefeated and doing everything like a super horse—and he is a super horse. He ran his race. Exaggerator just ran an unbe-lievable race. I did (want him to be close to the lead). I wanted a good, clean trip—free running.

"The fast pace (can) be blamed on me. I just didn't want traffic trouble going into the first turn."

As for Exaggerator's morning-after activities, he

got a walk with Desormeaux leading the way and made sure to try to get in some playful bites as he circled the shedrow.

"He doesn't look too tired, does he?" Desormeaux said. That aspect—Exaggerator's ability to recover

quickly from big efforts—is a point of emphasis from the Desormeaux camp. After the Derby, it was the main reason his connections felt good about taking another crack at Nyquist two weeks later. BH

it can't be. It's about pedigree," Desormeaux said. "I can't do much more in deepening his fitness. It's there. My job in the next three weeks, again, is fresh-ening him, and getting him strong and happy. That mile and a half deal, that's more about pedigree than what I do in the morning."

And the pedigree, in Desormeaux's opinion, gives Exaggerator an edge, at least against Nyquist.

"I think my horse is more skewed toward distance, as far as pedigree is concerned," Desormeaux said. " (Sire) Curlin could run all day and got beat a nose

The field for the June 11 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), the third leg of the Triple Crown, was starting to

take shape soon after the Xpressbet.com Preakness Stakes (gr. I) had been run.

While Nyquist will ship to Belmont Park May 23, Exaggerator will stay at Pimlico for a while longer. Trainer Keith Desormeaux said the colt would likely remain at the Baltimore track for another week and ship to New York May 29.

"We're thinking (about shipping) Sunday," Des-ormeaux said. "I'm going to be here a while. That was one of the decisions I made after the (Kentucky) Derby (Presented by Yum! Brands [gr. I]). Horses are affected by change in environment. When they get comfortable—this is their house, that 12-by-13 stall. They're there a day or so and they get comfortable.

"If I'm preaching about recovery, then why would I take him out of his comfort, out of his house, and move him somewhere else immediately after a tiring, tough race?"

As for the 1 1/2-mile Belmont in three weeks, Des-ormeaux is confident his horse will be ready.

"People think it's about fitness, but at this point,

Preakness runners, Laoban (sixth), Uncle Lino (sev-enth), and Collected (10th) departed Pimlico around 3 a.m. Sunday morning to catch a plane out of Maryland.

Second-place Preakness finisher Cherry Wine was in good order the day after his closing run, accord-ing to trainer Dale Romans, and will also head to the Belmont with stablemate and seventh-place Derby finisher Brody's Cause.

"He looks good," Romans said of Cherry Wine. "No worse for wear—nothing that can't be ready for three weeks from now. We'll point both of them there. We'll take a week to evaluate Cherry Wine to make sure he's ready to go, but all things equal, he'll be there." BH

in the Belmont. Curlin is known in the industry as a classic-producing horse and (Exaggerator) is out of a Vindication mare. Vindication is by Seattle Slew, so it's distance on top of distance... where as Nyquist is out of a Forestry mare, with Forestry more skewed to a sprint, maxing out at a mile in most cases."

Beyond the Belmont, Desormeaux also indicated plans to run Exaggerator in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course in August, and then the Breed-ers' Cup Classic (gr. I) back at his Santa Anita Park base.

SALES UPDATE

QUALITY WILL BE IN DEMAND AT MIDLANTIC SALEBy Ron Mitchell

When the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale kicks off May 23 at the

Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md., it won't take long to gauge the demand at the upper end of the market.

Hips 5 and 12, are both striking, well-bred sons of leading sire Tapit.

Hip 5, is out of the Indian Charlie mare, Indian Way, who won the My Juliet Stakes and finished third in the Prioress Stakes (gr. I). She is also the dam of stakes-placed Indian Brava.

The bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Mercedes Stables and is consigned by Randy Hartley and Dean De Renzo, who purchased him for $400,000 from the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.

"He figures to be one of the top horses in the sale," De Renzo said. "We hope the market thinks he is worth what we think he is."

De Renzo said the colt, who breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 3/5 during the under tack show, was targeted for the May sale rather than an earlier juvenile sale because he is a late developer.

"The clientele we have built are looking for two-turn horses, and they develop later than sprinters," the consignor said.

Hip 12 is a gray son of Tapit out of Jackpot Joanie, a winning Giant's Causeway half sister to Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Summerly and dam of recent Fantasy Stakes (gr. III) runner-up Taxable and her stakes-placed sister Synkros (both by Tapit).

Bred in Kentucky by Winchell Thorough-breds, the colt is one of five horses offered at the Midlantic sale through agent Randy Miles. Consigned by Gainesway to last year's Keene-land September yearling sale, he was bought back on a final bid of $625,000.

Also being offered Monday is the only 2-year-old in the sale sired by Curlin, whose

growing reputation was enhanced Saturday when his son Exaggerator won the Xpressbet.com Preak-ness Stakes (gr. I) at nearby Pimlico Race Course.

Consigned as Hip 121 by Bobby Dodd as agent, the chestnut colt was bred in Kentucky by New Life Stables and bought by Chapel Creek Stables for $145,000 from the Darby Dan consignment to last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale.

Monday's catalog includes horses that were among six who shared the under tack show’s best eighth-mile breeze time of :10. They are Hip 6, a Shackleford—Intentional Cry colt consigned by Casse Sales, agent for Kinsman Farm, and Hip 185, a Gone Astray—Salsa City filly from the Crane Thor-oughbreds consignment.

The two-day sale begins each morning at 10 a.m. EDT. BH

WHEELOCK WHITNEY JR. DIES AT 89By Myra Lewyn

Longtime Thoroughbred owner, philanthropist, and influential business and civic leader, Wheelock

Whitney Jr. died May 20 at his Promise Hill Farm in Independence, Minn. at age 89.

A member of The Jockey Club, Whitney was diag-nosed with cancer several years ago. Born in St. Cloud, Minn., and a graduate of Yale University, he was an investment banker and former chief executive officer of Dain Co., now RBC Wealth Management. He also chaired the family-owned Whitney Management Co.

Among Whitney's most notable runners was mul-tiple stakes winner Quicken Tree, cam-paigned in partnership with prominent California breeder Lou Rowan. A son of Royal Orbit, Quicken Tree won at the highest level, including the 1970 Santa Anita Handicap and San Juan Capistrano, and 1968 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

One of the first horses Whitney bought into, 1967 Santa Anita Derby win-ner Ruken, finished eighth in that year's Kentucky Derby in Rowan's colors.

Most recently Whitney, who had been an avid horseman and rider, kept run-ners with trainers Lisa Lewis and Shug McGaughey.

Whitney's interest in professional sports in Minnesota saw him as instru-mental in bringing Major League Baseball and a National Hockey League expansion team to the Twin Cities.

A one-time co-owner of the Minneso-ta Vikings, he also served on the board of the Minnesota Twins for 24 years and was a member of the investors group that was awarded an NHL expansion franchise in 1966, which became the Minnesota North Stars, ESPN reported.

A former mayor of Wayzata, Minn., Whitney loved politics as much as sports but was unsuccessful in bids for a U.S. Senate seat in 1964 and for Minnesota governor in 1982.

Former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson told Minnesota Public Radio that Whit-ney, a member of the Minnesota Busi-

ness Hall of Fame, was a key mover in making Minne-sota what it is today.

"He was the one who was really persuasive in companies moving to Minnesota, forming their own headquarters in Minnesota," Carlson said. "He was just involved in everything, whether the arts or edu-cation. Any form of philanthropy and building, he was involved with. He was one of the greatest builders Minnesota ever had."

Whitney is survived by his wife, former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen Blatz, and his four children, Wheelock Whitney III, Pennell Whitney, Joseph Whitney, and Ben Whitney. His first wife, Irene Whitney, died in 1985. BH

SALES UPDATE

PIKE FAMILY AFFAIR AT MIDLANTIC SALEBy Ron Mitchell

When prospective buyers show up at Pike Racing’s consignment to the Fasig-Tipton

Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training, it isn’t long before they get to know three members of the Pike family.

Salley Pike greets buyers, her husband, Al, provides background and vital information about the horses, and their son Colt, who recently re-turned from a stint working at farms and sales in Australia, does the all-important showing.

“It’s a blessing to have my family working with me,” Al Pike said. “Everyone likes my wife, and my son is turning out to be a pretty good hand.”

Rather than play in both the Florida and East Coast juvenile markets this year, the Pikes will sell only at the May 23-24 Fasig-Tipton sale in

Timonium, Md., where the family’s previous sales graduates include multiple grade II winner Vicar's in Trouble—sold for $80,000—and Vyjack, anoth-er multiple grade II winner sold for $100,000.

This year Pike Racing’s six horses include an Un-cle Mo filly that breezed a co-fastest quarter-mile time of :21 2/5 during the under tack shows.

“We thought all winter she had the makings to be a star,” Pike said. “You can’t tell from watching her how fast she is going because she does it so easily. She is just a special filly. We got pretty lucky on the sire. She’s not a good filly because she’s by Uncle Mo; she’s a good filly who is by Uncle Mo.”

Consigned as Hip 490, the Uncle Mo filly is a half sister to grade II-placed Lassofthemohicans and was produced from a half sister to three stakes winners, including two-time champion sprinter Housebuster.

Bred in Kentucky by Tom VanMeter, Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds, and Fox Strauss, she was a Keeneland September buy-back on a final bid of $80,000. Al Pike privately purchased her for client Danny Saloom.

A native Texan, Al Pike was raised on a ranch where roping calves and Quarter Horse match races were the norm. He trained Quarter Horses but migrated to Thoroughbreds after eight years when his major clients made similar transitions.

The Pikes operated out of Trinity Meadows racetrack before the Texas facility closed. In need of a place quickly because they were preparing 40-50 young horses for the races, the Pikes set-tled upon Copper Crowne Training Center near Opelousas, La., where they have been for some five to six years while maintaining a residence in Texas.

While the Uncle Mo filly will likely top the Pike consignment, Al Pike said, “I think we have some-thing for everybody. We have sold some really good horses out of here. We have always gotten our horses sold here and made enough that our clients are happy.” BH

SONGBIRD'S FIRST 'EASY' BREEZE SINCE FEVERBy Claire Novak

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s plan for champion Songbird was to use an exercise rider and keep

her from doing too much in her first work since a fever put her on the sidelines.

He left Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith off the fleet filly May 22 at Santa Anita Park and Songbird showed just what she thought of that idea.

The 3-year-old Medaglia d'Oro filly went four fur-longs in :46 2/5.

"(Hollendorfer) called me and said, 'This horse is unbelievable,' " owner Rick Porter said. "He was telling me how fit she was after (the fever), but he said he was just going to do an easy half. He said she didn't look like she was going that fast. That tells me what she can do. If she was breezing that easy first work back, I think nobody can keep up with her."

The June 18 Summertime Oaks (gr. II) at Santa Anita is the hopeful target for Songbird's return. After that, Porter said, "There's a lot of good races on the East Coast.

"The Summertime isn't a big race, but it's the first thing we can get that she might be ready for," Porter said. "After this (morning), she looks like she's going to be ready for it. We just want to get her running, and then we're going to take her east.

"I'm more conservative with this horse because she's so good. I want to run her against the boys at the right time. I want to see her run against the best girls first, and we'll have plenty of time to run against the boys if she stays sound. I wouldn't mind running against the boys as a 4-year-old, and I might run her as a 5-year-old. That's why I'm in it, for the fun of running really good horses."

Porter outlined the July 24 Coaching Club Ameri-can Oaks (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course, the Aug. 20 Alabama Stakes (gr. I) at the upstate oval, and the Sept. 24 Cotillion (gr. I) at Parx Racing as potential targets for Songbird's summer campaign.

"We definitely want to run in the Cotillion. I need to see what the timing is to make sure we run there," he said.

Porter also had a little smack to talk for the 3-year-old colt division.

"I honestly believe we can beat Nyquist, because I don't think Nyquist can keep up with her," he said of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner, who finished third in the Xpressbet.com Preakness (gr. I) won by Exaggerator May 21.

Many believe the undefeated filly, who has aired geared down wins by open lengths in all of her seven races, is one of the best sophomores in the country in either division. BH

RAIN AT CURRAGH DAMPENS GUINEASBy Tom Hall

Minding’s supremacy in the QIPCO One Thou-sand Guineas (Eng-I), where she led a Ballydoyle

sweep of the top three places by 3 1/2 lengths should have made the Tattersalls Irish One Thousand Guin-eas (Ire-I) just another stroll in the park—albeit a soggy one.

However, not everything goes to plan between the starting gate and the finish line, and at the end of the mile over the Curragh’s yielding to soft turf, the Aidan O’Brien-trained daughter of Galileo, who was the over-whelming favorite in the field of 10 3-year-old fillies, found herself a head shy of the winner Jet Setting.

Owned by Equinegrowthpartners Syndicate and trained by Adrian Paul Keatley, Jet Setting was sup-plemented to the Guineas—whose field was reduced by four because of the wet conditions—on the strength of her three-length win over heavy ground in the Leopardstown One Thousand Guineas Trial Stakes (Ire-III). She finished ninth in Minding’s English Guineas rout.

Ridden by Shane Foley, Jet Setting held off Mind-ing, who was vying to give O’Brien his seventh Guin-eas victory.

Minding had more problems than Jet Setting. Entering the starting stalls, the Ballydoyle filly banged her head on the gate, scraping the side of her face and bursting a sinus, which bloodied her nose.

Jet Setting is from the second crop of Fast Com-

pany, a group III-winning son of Danehill Dancer who sired 4-year-old Godolphin filly Devonshire—winner of the Lanwades Stud Stakes (Ire-II) on the Curragh card the previous day.

Fast Company stands at Overbury Stud in Eng-land for £4,000 ($5,800). Jet Setting is his first classic winner.

Jet Setting is out of the winning Johannesburg mare Mean Lae, a daughter of Plume Rouge, who won the Irish Stallions Farm EBF Fairy Bridge Stakes at Tipperary.

The weather affected not only the Guineas but also the Tattersalls Gold Cup (Ire-I), which lost The Grey Gatsby and Time Test, reducing the field of old-er horses to six.

As in the Guineas, the favorite belonged to O’Brien and Coolmore with their 4-year-old Galileo filly Found, who bettered Investec Derby (Eng-I) winner Golden Horn in last year’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT) at Keeneland.

However, the 10 1/2-furlong race was won by Newtown Anner Stud Farm’s homebred Fascinating Rock, a 5-year-old by Fastnet Rock out of the Polar Falcon mare Miss Polaris. Trained by Dermot Weld and ridden by Pat Smullen, Fascinating Rock won by 3 3/4 lengths over Found. Fascinating Rock finished second to Al Kazeem in last year’s Gold Cup.

With two runner-up finishes, Galileo was not shut out on the day. His 3-year-old colt Beacon Rock won the Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes (Ire-III) to become his sire’s 236th stakes winner. BH

SINHALITE LIGHTS UP IN JAPAN CLASSICBy Mary Reeder

Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas Jpn-I) runner-up Sinhalite redeemed herself

in the May 22 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks Jpn-I).

Eighteen 3-year-old fillies contested the 2,400-meter (about 1 1/2-mile) race on the turf at Tokyo Racecourse. Oka Sho winner, Jeweler did not make the race due to inju-ry, leaving Sinhalite as the favorite.

Bred by Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Racing in Japan, the Deep Impact filly is out of the British-bred and U.S.-raced Singha-lese (Singspiel), who won the 2005 Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT).

The mare was exported to Japan after Yoshida purchased her out of the Three Chimneys Sales' consignment to the 2007 Keeneland November sale for $1.9 million.

Finishing a neck behind the winner was Cecchino (King Kamehameha) who came

into the race off a win in the Sankei Sports Sho Flora Stakes (Jpn-II) to qualify for the classic.

The second leg of Japan’s Triple Crown for fillies is meant to test stamina and speed while the first leg, run at 1,600 meters (about one mile), is more about speed. BH

TOP RUNNERS HAVE SOUTH AMERICAN FLAVORBy Diego Mitagstein

Major victories by South American horses in the United States are not uncommon, but recently

South American mares have stood out through their offspring.

Argentinian-bred Miss Simpatia (Southern Halo) is the dam of Carina Mia (Malibu Moon) winner of the Eight Belles Stakes (gr. II) at Churchill Downs. Fellow Argentine-bred Sarasota (Luhuk) gains attention in sprint races through Salutos Amigos (Salute the Sarge), winner of the Carter Handicap (gr. I).

Another Argentinian import, Critikola (Tough Critic), produced Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid), winner of the 2006 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), and now the dam of grade I-winning sisters Forever Unbridled and Unbridled Forever, both by Unbridled's Song.

Peru has been to the fore recently through Ken-tucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) runner Creator (Tapit). The gray, winner of the Arkansas Derby (gr. I), is a son of Morena (Privately Held), a champion in Peru at 2, 3, and 4.

Chile gains mention through Hickory (Dushyan-tor). Her City Zip son Alert Bay won the San Francisco Mile Stakes (gr IIIT) at Golden Gate Fields.

But you can find more success for South American broodmares overseas. Satono Diamond (Deep Im-pact), a son of Argentinian three-time grade I winner Malpensa (Orpen), is one of the best 3-year-olds in

Japan. Promising Run (Hard Spun), out of the Brazilian mare Aviacion (Know Heights), was recently third in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Eng-III) at York.

South American mares are often robust, have good bone, and generally, have outstanding conformation. They also provide a very interesting degree of stami-na although they are capable of showing off in sprint divisions. But maybe most important is the economic factor, because they are much more affordable than many other broodmares in the market. BH

WHAT IS UNCLE MO WORTH?By Eric Mitchell

Nyquist's third-place finish in the May 21 Xpressbet.com Preakness Stakes (gr. I) won't

diminish the luster of Uncle Mo, his sire and dominant second-crop stallion.

A week before the second leg of the Triple Crown, industry experts conservatively projected the value of Ashford Stud's son of Indian Charlie had grown to between $120 and $140 million.

Depending on where Uncle Mo's stud fee progresses over the next few years, experts es-timate that Uncle Mo's value could climb as high as $245 million.

Uncle Mo began the breeding season with a $75,000 stud fee and was reportedly booked full by the end of December. Several breeders said they expect his fee to be at least $150,000 next year. Based on the strength of his record-setting freshman year, his fee rose 200% between 2015 and 2016.

Remarkable would be an understatement re-garding Uncle Mo’s first-crop year, with his initial runners led by Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juve-nile (gr. I) winner and champion 2-year-old male Nyquist. The young stallion ended 2015 with a record $3,675,294 in progeny earnings.

Current leading U.S. stallion Tapit, who set his own progeny earnings records as overall top sire in 2014 and 2015, held the previous record.

So far in his second-crop year, Uncle Mo has not lost any momentum. Prior to the Preakness he set another record for second-crop sires with more than $6.8 million in progeny earnings, exceeding the previous $6,590,211 record set in 2007 by Street Cry.

Uncle Mo is having such a strong year that he ranks second on the general leading sire list, a little more than a half-million in progeny earn-ings behind Tapit.

"If Uncle Mo puts together another year like

this year, that $150,000 would be a low num-ber," said Charlie Boden, stallion season sales director and racing manager for Calumet Farm.

Stallion valuation is part economics, part instinct. The economics begins with the stud fee. If, for example, Uncle Mo's stud fee next year is $200,000 and he sires 175 live foals from the 2017 mares bred that would equal $35 million in revenue.

What multiple is applied is where gut instinct comes in. Most in the stallion business use a multiple of four, which would put Uncle Mo's value at $140 million.

Ron Kirk, owner and president of Kirk Horse Insurance, said a four-times multiple is too low and suggests a six- or seven-times multiple is more in line. A seven-times multiple against $35 million in annual revenue puts Uncle Mo's value at $245 million.

"Uncle Mo is worth a higher multiple of in-come because he is less vulnerable to downside changes," Kirk said. "The horse has established himself. It would take a lot of turmoil in the mar-ket to affect his value." BH
