    For the wrestling team, resh off o a season in which they won dis-tricts, anything short o a state championship would be a bust, co-cap-tain John Gough 16 said.

    Wrestlers like Gough and co-captain Joseph Kurta 16 say the teamhas what it takes to compete.

    My expectations are or everyone to perorm well again, Goughsaid. We also hope to beat North in team districts and hopeully winregionals, because we definitely can.

    On Nov. 3, the girls gym-nastics season kicked off withthe first practice last uesday,coach Courtney Hamidi said.

    I think we will still havea really strong team, Hami-di said. We did lose a coupleo experienced seniors rom

    our line-up, but were alsoreturning a lot o our stronggymnasts, and we have severalreshman who will be able tocompete because they have alot o experience.

    Having almost a perectseason last year, their toughestcompetition was the Farming-ton High School eam, Hami-di said. Te girls gymnasticsteam also qualified or the re-gional meet, and placing 3rd;urther qualiying them orthe state finals where they fin-ished 7th overall.

    I think our first practicewas a good way to start the

    said. It gave the new gym-nasts a good eel or what toexpect this season.

    During her first week onthe team, Emma Scott 19 saidshe had a lot o un and im-proved throughout the week.

    I think we will go ar thisyear, Scott said. Te resh-men team, in my opinion,

    brings a lot to the team, andIm very excited to competewith compete with everyone.

    Also, Dugan said with hardwork and determination, shethinks the team can accom-plish their goals.

    Every year, our main teamgoal is to qualiy or the statemeet, Hamidi said. I thinkthat we definitely have the tal-ent and ability to do that againthis year, and we also hope toqualiy as many girls as we canor both the regional meet andthe state championship.

    Teir first competition isDec. 7 against the Birming-

    ham United eam.

    Afer being district champions in the MACred division and coming off o a 18-5 record, thegirls varsity basketball team looks orward to an-other successul season, captain Anna Carmody16 said.

    Te team will have its first game Nov. 30 atChandler Park, Richards said.

    Afer tryouts, the team will practice, lif andplay six days a week, coach Kevin Richards said.

    Carmody said her hope is or the season to beun and exciting.

    Im really looking orward to the chemistrythat the team will have, Carmody said.

    Despite losing players rom last year, SarahSimmet 17 has high hopes or this season.

    We lost a lot o seniors, but everyone is readyto work hard at practice just like we did all sum-mer to make this a great year, Simmet said. Imlooking orward to seeing what the team canbring to the table, and seeing everyone step up...

    ryouts begin this week, and practices willstart next week.

    I think that this season everyone will play amajor role on the court, Carmody said.

    Afer placing eighth in the state last year, the boys swim and diveteam, led by last years state meet swimmer o the year Jacob Montague16, looks to build on last years success.

    I have been trying to improve in the off season, so I can try to wintwo events at states and break some more records, Montague said.

    Montague won two events with record breaking times last year.Some o the team has been training beore the season, but we start

    beore Tanksgiving, and we should be able to get back into shape

    quickly, Montague said. We are lreturning guys and some new guygood.

    Afer winning the state championship last year, thegirls hockey team is ready to start another successulseason, Emma Frame 16 said.

    Frame 16 said shes excited to see how the team willdo.

    We lost our seniors last year that were reallygood, Frame said. Tis season well try to get to thesame skill level. Tere are a lot o new sophomoresand reshmen- a ew that Ive never played with be-ore- so itll be interesting to see how they impact theteam.

    As ar as their goals or the season, Frame andGrace Moody 16 agree the team hopes to make it tostates again.

    Ultimatewly our goal is to win states, Moody said.Hopeully well get that ar again, but we are going tohave to work hard. I think our team this year will havedepth.

    Frame is also confident in the teams abilities.I think we have the potential to do it, Frame said.

    We want to be the best team we can be.As ar as the team off the ice, Moody said that she

    also enjoys the social aspect o the sport and its unteam events.

    We have Secret Santa at Christmas time and ourbig trip to Chicago every year, Moody said. I startedplaying reshman year, and I love it.

    Te team has its first game on Nov. 21 at 5:30against Country Day.

    LINSDEY CLARK 16 //Staf Writer

    Te Blue Dolphins synchronizedswimming team is preparing or its upcoming season, with

    the hopes o winning states this year and becoming closer as ateam, coach Lauren Martin said.

    My ultimate goal is or us to take first place at states, Mar-tin said. Im really hopeul and excited. I know the girls aregoing to be great.

    Te season, which consists o both a figure season and aroutine season, begins Nov. 9 and ends in May.

    Martin said she hopes to have 15 girls on the team this year.I am excited to get to meet the new girls, Martin said. We

    are going to have a great team this year.Martin will coach the combined North and South team with

    Jessie Sutton, who is also a South and Blue Dolphins alumni.Te team will split its practices between the two schools.

    eam member Brooke Martin 17, said she enjoys having acombined team with North because o the riendships.

    It is awesome, Brooke said. You get to meet a lot morepeople. It is cool to have that sense o togetherness.

    Te team will compete against Ann Arbor Huron, AnnArbor Pioneer and roy High School, the only other schools inthe state with synchronized swim teams.

    Brooke said she is optimistic about the new season and theteams chances.

    Im really excited or the season to start, Brooke said. Imjust excited to see how everyone works together and figures itall out.

    CHEEROLIVIA SHEFFER 17 //Staf Writer

    Afer finishing last season in third place overallin the Macomb Area Conerence (MAC), tryoutsor the girls varsity cheer team start this week.

    Practices will take place on uesday through Fri-day rom 3:30 to 5:30 in the field gym during theseason. Te team competes on either Wednesdaysor Saturdays.

    Te first competition will take place on Dec. 9 atCousino High School.

    Tis is a MAC crossover, so its a bunch o teamsrom different MAC color titles and divisions,Claire Duncan 17 said.

    Duncan said she enjoys different things about

    each o her cheer seasons, but likes competition be-cause o the time and effort put into the routinesand the eeling she receives rom winning.

    Our team this year gets along incredibly, andwe have the potential to do very well this season,Duncan said.

    Second year coach Ashley Gerbi said her goal orthe season is to raise the bar by incorporating newand higher-level gymnastics along with a wider va-riety o stunts and visuals.

    We are going in with the mindset and the goalo working to raise our scores every competition,Gerbi said.

    South hockey skates into a new season with new players andnew expectations, Will Poplawski 16 said. With a good mix oseniors and juniors, the team eels it is more ready than ever tomake a run.

    Tis years goal remains exactly the same: to win a state cham-pionship, Poplawski said. In regards to talent, we have picked upsome great additions this year which will have a positive impact.

    Marshall Vyletel 16 is one o these new aces. Vyletel is excitedto get on the ice and make a championship run.

    I look orward to being in a locker room with the great group okids I grew up with, Vyletel said. I think our roster is an incredibleone. Everyone is super passionate and we have the talent to backup our work ethic.

    A year afer making the State Semifinals, anything short o atleast an appearance in the state championship would be considereda bust, Vyletel said.

    Te chemistry is the best o any team Ive ever been on, Vyletelsaid. Everyone really wants to see their teammates succeed andeveryone brings a different competitive edge to the game.

    For the team, I want to get into the state tournament and make arun or the title, Kurta said. I have trained my a-- off with the teamthis offseason because many o us have aspirations and have the talentto become state champions.

    Kurta, who has wrestled all our years o his high school career, hasyet to win a state championship and hopes to go out with a bang orhis final season.

    Tis is the best team that South has ever had Kurta said. Weknow we can be a powerhouse in the state.

    Te diving team only has two returning divers and are looking ornew divers, no matter what the skill, Mulhern said.

    Te team is trying to return to the top ten in the state, Montague16 said.

    Tis years boys basketball team is lookingto improve their team chemistry to give them achance at the conerence title.

    We are more together than last year (be-cause) we actually like each other this year, Mi-chael Calcaterra 16 said. Last year there weresome conflicts within the team.

    Head coach roy Glasser is excited about thenew chemistry and said the team is a lot o un.

    Te team has been playing in off season tour-naments and camps until practice, Glasser said.

    Te kids have spent a lot o time in theweight room this year in the all, Glasser said.

    He said they are playing more as a unit thisyear than last year and hopes to see improve-ment in the team sharing the ball.

    Te team has also received praise rom a col-lege coach, Glasser said.

    We actually had a college coach come in tosee the kids rom University o Detroit Mercyand his first comment was your kids like eachother a lot, Glasser said.

    Glasser is excited to have returning seniorJack Maher and junior Brennen Buszka.

    Starters Jack Maher and and Brennen Busz-ka both played a critical role in the program last

    year, Glasser said.

    With the season starting, the girls figure skating team looksto send its C team to states again this year, Caitlin Miller 17said.

    As o now, we lost a ew skaters last year rom A team, Ce-leste Franke-Joyce 16 said. And this year the girls look alright,but the C team will probably be the strongest.

    Te team is split into different levels where you have to testout to get into a higher tier, Julia Barnes 16 said. Te skaterson A team do the hardest elements and those on the C team dothe most basic.

    Tanks to the support rom coach Claire LaDue, Fran-ke-Joyce believes everybody on the team benefits.

    Shes really good with everyone, and shes good at comingin or extra help or girls who need it, Franke-Joyce said. Shes

    always there, and shes really supportive.Franke-Joyce said also that West Bloomfield, a newly-added

    team to their district, is a team that might be a potential rival.I think C team has the ability to go to states or sure, but

    with the addition o the West Bloomfield team into our district,there will probably be some good skaters on there or A, Fran-ke-Joyce said. But hopeully well pull through.

    In addition to their hopes o sending more than just the Cteam to states, both Franke-Joyce and Barnes look orward tobeing being seniors and leaders on the team.

    Im excited to finish my our years strong by hopeullygoing to states, Barnes said.
