A Recap of a Momentous YearJose Banchs, MD, FASE, 2018-2019 ASE Foundation Annual Appeal Committee Chairman

was a wonderful year for the ASE Foundation! As I reflect on all our achievements, I want to take a moment

to thank all the members of the committee, for it is their efforts that helped us grow above and beyond my expectations. Please join me in expressing appreciation to my co-chair, David Rubenson, MD, FASE, and our team members: Nausheen Akhter, MD, FASE; Kristin Billick, RDCS, (AE, PE), FASE; Allan Klein, MD, FASE; Elizabeth McIlwain, MHS, RCS, FASE; Navin Nanda, MD; Bharatbhushan Patel, RDCS, FASE; Rachel Quang, RDCS; Thomas Ryan, MD, FASE; Douglas Shook, MD, FASE; Vincent Sorrell, MD, FASE; Jessica Spellman, MD; Lissa Sugeng, MD, MPH, FASE; Gregory Tatum, MD, FASE; and Ritu Thamman, MD, FASE. I am honored to work with you all. Before I delve in to what we can look forward to in 2019, I want to review our numerous accomplishments from this past year. Drum roll please… I am thrilled to announce that we smashed our 2018 Annual Appeal fundraising goal of $250,000 and raised $287,915.99! Thank you to all of our very generous donors for helping us exceed our goal. The pie chart (page 4) shows a breakdown of the allocation of donations. I am so proud of the progress we have made. We have been fortunate to have significant growth in donations received, not just in 2018, but over the past three years. We’ve also seen an increase in funds raised during special events, like Giving Tuesday, which is shown in the two charts below. Our ability to surpass our fundraising goals comes from the collective efforts throughout the year. We began our 2018 campaign with a great start, raising $1,300 from ten donors who ”Spread the Love” during the first two weeks of February

in honor of American Heart Month. This was followed by Spring Giving Day, when 33 ASE members donated a total of $4,475 on March 20th, helping us kick-start into spring. Both campaigns saw increases in participation over prior years. In June at ASE 2018 in Nashville, TN, the Foundation booth received more than $14,500 in donations from 101 donors. That’s more money from more people than ASE 2017! Support from donors last year allowed us to offer 54 travel grants to sonographers, members of ASE’s four specialty councils, and research abstract presenters to attend ASE 2018.

Another stand out accomplishment is that the 9th Annual Research Awards Gala generated its highest ever proceeds, garnering $94,726 for echo research. The Scientific Sessions continue to be a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for the following year’s activities.

The last three months of the year are always very busy for the ASE Foundation, and 2018 was no exception! We celebrated Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) in October by encouraging donations in honor of sonographers. Seven donors raised a total of $2,670, and honorees were sent personalized emails thanking them for the role they play in the lives of patients and those with whom they work. As of October 31st, we had met 77% of our 2018 Annual Appeal goal. Then in November, we set an ambitious

I am so proud of the progress we have made. We have been fortunate to have significant growth in donations, not just in 2018, but over the past three years.

outreach event since 2014. During the span of seven and a half hours across four WVU Medicine locations, 374 patients were provided free cardiovascular assessment exams. With all the success of 2018 you’re probably curious what’s in store for 2019. Here are a few things to look forward to. The ASE Board of Directors created a separate strategic plan for

the ASE Foundation which begins this year. More information on our goals can be found on page 6. We are partnering with WomenHeart to get educational information

into the hands of 100,000 women with heart disease! More information is available on page 7. In the fall we will host two global health outreach events in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, China and Eldoret, Kenya. June’s Scientific Sessions in Portland, OR will include the return of the CV Challenge, Chain Reaction Donation Challenge, and the Images from the Heart Photo Exhibit. The Annual Research Awards Gala will be celebrating its 10th year, so you’ll definitely want to be in attendance. ASE 2019 will also include the inaugural Gardin Lecture, endowed by Julius M. Gardin, MD, FASE. More information about this is available on page 6. In summary, this was another excellent year for the ASE Foundation. Thank you for your continued support. As I always say, our supporters are the heart and soul of ASEF! I am looking forward to another successful year.

single-day giving goal of $15,000 for Giving Tuesday. Once again, our donors came in strong and thanks to 104 of you, we more than doubled our goal and raised $33,786 in just 24 hours! Heading into December we had met 96% of our $250,000 fundraising goal for 2018. During the final month of the year, with the finish line in sight, we received $43,420. This brought our 2018 Annual Appeal fundraising total to $287,915.99. While we had great financial success in 2018, we also had impact across the globe. In 2016, ASE joined efforts with many of our International Alliance Partners through the World Alliance of Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) Normal Values Study to better understand if the current recommended normal values for heart dimensions and function in subjects from different races and countries are similar or different. In March of this year, principal investigators of the study announced that they had enrolled a landmark number of 1,000 subjects to date and by the end of the year, that number reached over 2,200 adult individuals! A total of nineteen study centers in fifteen countries across six continents participated in the study over two years. Look for updated results at ASE 2019 in Portland. In other global news, ASEF hosted two outreach events this year. In August, a team of ASEF volunteers travelled to Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, to participate in an outreach event focused on pre-identified individuals with Chagas positive serology. Over two and a half days, five teams of volunteers from three countries performed comprehensive echo exams on 161 individuals. Then in October, a team of ASEF volunteers travelled to Morgantown, West Virginia for our first domestic

ANNOUNCEMENT: E21 RESEARCH GRANTS AVAILABLE: REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS TO OPEN IN APRIL

Don’t miss your opportunity to apply for a 2019 ASE Foundation Council Travel Grant. These $1,000 travel grants for trainees support attendance at the ASE Annual Scientific Sessions, which will be held June 21-25 in Portland, Oregon. To apply, contact [email protected] for instructions.

The ASE Foundation is proud to announce that it will be offering E21 Research Grants later this year! The ASE Foundation understands that funding a program that puts priority on partnering physician-scientists with engineers is a step forward in accelerating the translation of new technology to clinical care. These grants will fund clinician-scientist and engineering partnerships. Stay tuned in upcoming months for further details and a formal request for applications.

The Foundation is now accepting volunteer applications for two global health outreach events this fall. In September, teams will be working in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, China and Eldoret, Kenya. Both physician and sonographer volunteers are needed to participate in these events. If you would like to learn more about these opportunities, visit ASEFoundation.org/Volunteer. If you can fulfill the requirements listed and are interested in applying to volunteer, please complete and submit the applicable volunteer application form. We are continually impressed by the incredible generosity and enthusiasm of our community for this type of volunteerism. Thank you for helping us make a world of difference!

New in 2019

The ASE Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of a new annual lecture! Endowed to ASEF through a generous long-term gift from Julius

Gardin, MD, FASE, the Gardin Lecture will take place during the annual Scientific Sessions, beginning with ASE 2019 in Portland, OR. Dr. Julius Gardin has been associated with the American Society of Echocardiography for nearly four decades. He served as the ninth President of ASE (1993-1995), chaired the first scientific sessions in 1992, presented the Edler Lecture in 1995, and recently completed a 10-year term as associate editor of JASE. Dr. Gardin has mentored numerous physicians and

he Foundation has experienced immense growth and development since its incorporation in 2002. It has now grown to a point where we must balance our vision with

the realities of healthcare and government. As an organization, we know it is important to anticipate strategic factors likely to affect our ability to succeed and be flexible to assess the

sonographers. He has a passion for education which will be supported by this lecture series because it will provide the funding resources to bring a luminary speaker to the Scientific Sessions every year. The selection process for the inaugural Gardin Lecture speaker is underway. It will be presented at ASE 2019 on Sunday, June 23rd during the “Echo Technology at the Cutting Edge of Knowledge” session.

implications. In that spirit, the ASE Board of Directors spent the past year developing a strategic plan that distinguishes the Foundation from the Society. This effort will allow both ASE and the Foundation to better prioritize and focus their individual efforts moving forward, while also strengthening coordination and collaboration between the two organizations.

Looking ahead, we will also embark on the process of establishing a separate Board of Directors dedicated to the Foundation.

Your Gifts in Action: Helping Heart Disease Patients

7ASE Foundation Newsletter - Winter 2019

he ASE Foundation is very proud to announce that we have partnered with WomenHeart®: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, to provide women with

important information to help them better navigate the often complicated process of living with heart disease. ASEF has become a sponsor of their Red Bag of Courage® program. What is a Red Bag of Courage®, you ask? It’s an educational program that delivers tote bags containing heart health materials directly into the hands of women who need it most. Red Bags of Courage are distributed by WomenHeart® Champion volunteers nationally, and reach 100,000 people per year! The bags are distributed through various avenues including hospitals, health fairs, speaking engagements, and at the Annual WomenHeart® Wenger Awards dinner, to name a few. The items included in the bags contain educational information on an array of health, medical, dietary, and fitness topics. This information is designed to help women better understand heart disease, how heart disease affects them, how to reduce their risks, and/or how to live well with heart disease. The material included in the bags is also made available online on the WomenHeart® website.

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, the ASE Foundation was able to raise the funds to directly impact and educate women with heart disease on the importance and safety of cardiovascular ultrasound in 2019. You may recall learning about the Red Bag of Courage® if you stopped by the ASE Foundation booth while attending ASE 2018 in Nashville,

TN last June. We have contributed our “Patient’s Guide to Heart Ultrasound” to the 2019 bags. The flyer describes cardiovascular ultrasound, why a doctor would order one, and what a heart ultrasound shows. We’ve also included the URL addresses to our website and our SeeMyHeart.org site, where patients can access additional information. The ASE Foundation is honored to help sponsor this program and we are grateful to WomenHeart® for understanding the importance of putting heart ultrasound information into the hands of 100,000 patients and their families.

10th Annual Research Awards Gala

he ASE Foundation invites you to our 10th Annual Research Awards “Black & White” Gala, where we will be honoring our 2019 Award Recipients.

The gala will begin at 7:30 PM with a welcome reception at the Hilton Portland Downtown in Portland, OR. Dinner, award recognitions, after-event dancing and nightcap will follow. Registration is now open for tables and individual ticket sales. Log into your ASE or ASEF member portal, select “Events”, then select “ASEF Gala” to reserve your table or seat. A portion of each table or ticket sale is considered a charitable tax donation to the ASE Foundation’s 2019 Annual Appeal. If you have questions, please contact Mary Alice Dilday at 919-297-7188, or [email protected].

n recent years, we have been inspired by photographs taken by ASE members while traveling the world to participate in medically-related humanitarian events. As ASE members,

there is no doubt that you excel at taking images of the heart. Now we would like to give you the opportunity to share the images you’ve taken from the heart. Perhaps you took a special photo of a child you met along the way, the chaos of traffic in India, a marketplace in China, daily life in Hanoi, or a new group of friends in Argentina. We invite you to share these heartfelt memories (and tell us what they mean to you) for a special photo exhibit to be held during ASE 2019 in Portland, June 21-25, 2019. Theme: Photographs taken while the photographer was participating in humanitarian or training events that were medical in nature. The photographs themselves need not be medically themed, but may capture faces of people, landscapes, cultural observations, etc. If you do submit a photograph of a patient or examination, we ask that you be respectful in protecting the privacy and dignity of the patient. The photo entries will be accepted electronically February 1 – March 31, 2019. All images must have been taken no earlier than January 2012. Up to 14 entries, selected by an external curator, will be matted and displayed in a photo exhibit during ASE 2019 in Portland. All other qualifying entries will be displayed electronically during ASE’s Scientific Sessions in Portland. You do not need to be present at the ASE 2019 to participate. There is no entry fee, but for the selected photos, photographers are responsible for sending an 11”x14” print, and also encouraged (optional) to make the selected photos available for purchase, as a donation to ASEF. For complete information about this exhibition and to enter, please visit ASEFoundation.org/images-from-the-heart/.
