Sunday, December 9, 2018 will be White Gift Sunday at Alsfeldt and Knox. Items

may be brought to church until Sunday, December 16. It is a special day each year when we are invited to share our Christmas with the wider community.

White Gift Sunday dates back to 1904 in Ohio. The wife of a Methodist minister and her two daughters came up with the idea of giving gifts wrapped in white paper at Christmas time to people in need. Gifts are wrapped in white so that they will be anonymous. We now give un-wrapped gifts so that those distributing will be able to choose appropriately for those receiving. The White Gift shares in the spirit of Christ and the God of love at Christmas. We give gifts of love to people in need.

This year we will again be collecting for the Cape Croker church and community for their Christmas Eve Give-a-way. Here is this year’s “Wish List”:

• Hygiene products for women and for men * General Stuff: deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, mouthwash, toothbrushes,

soap, body wash * Specifically for Women: pads, tampons, makeup remover, nail polish, nail polish

remover, razors * Specifically for Men: shave cream, razors • Robes (housecoats) • Slippers with backs for seniors • Mitts, gloves and scarves • Pop ups for phones, ear phones, stylus pens • PJs for men and for women – L, XL and XXL • Brushes for men and women, hair ties, hair sprays or mousse/gel • Socks and underwear for women and for men • Toys, crafts, puzzles, games (new and traditional), books for children • Kitchen utensils, t-towels, dish cloths, etc.

Also remember the Clifford Food Bank this Christmas season with donations of non-perishable food items, hygiene items, laundry soap, detergents, and toys. If you wish to give a monetary gift, place your donation on the offering plate and designate for ‘Food Bank’ so you may be receipted.

Donate by PAR

PAR stands for Pre-Authorized Remittance. It is a formal way of saying ‘automatic withdrawal’. Many of us pay our bills directly from our bank accounts – PAR is an automatic withdrawal that supports your church. Pre-Authorized Remittance, or PAR, allows you to support your church through an automatic monthly withdrawal from your bank account.

The United Church administers the program following the giver’s wishes—for example, you might give X amount for local church expenses and X amount for Mission & Service.

The PAR program is provided as a service to congregations and donors. Congregations enjoy regular cash flow that enables mission and ministry. Donors have the convenience of giving from home and the assurance of knowing that they have supported their church even in their own absence.

If you would like to set up a pre-authorized remittance account (PAR), please pick up a pamphlet at your church or contact The United Church of Canada 1-800-465-3771 or email [email protected]

Our Interim Minister of Pastoral Care

Pastor Art Rev. Dr. Arthur Hiley

Thirty + years ago, Pastor Art was our minister. He moved to Barrie to become the Minister of

Pastoral Care and Evangelism at Collier Street United Church. From there he moved to London to become the Senior Minister of Byron United Church. He decided to leave Byron United to become an interim minister at a number of congregations in the London area. Presently, he is the Interim Minister of Pastoral Care at Dorchester United Church while their Pastor is recovering from a long term illness. His passion for ministry is helping people grow in their faith in Jesus and helping congregations develop strong ministries that demonstrate the love of Jesus and invite people to enter into a personal relationship with him. We have asked Pastor Art to help with our caring for Clifford Pastoral Charge. He will be leading worship at Alsfeldt and Knox once a month and on the Friday and Saturday will be visiting. When Pastor Art visits he will be asking how you are doing and answering questions that you may have about your congregation’s ongoing ministry. Of course he will not be able to share any confidential information. Note: you can call him or email him at any time and he will contact you as soon as possible. Our pastoral charge secretary Ellen Underwood is helping in setting up times for a visit – call the office 519-327-8378 or email [email protected] . We are hoping that everyone will be open to Pastor Art’s visiting.

The United Church in Transition

Region 8 has a new name! Western Ontario Waterways - "WOW!"

This name honours the traditional pathways through this area and also pays tribute to the preceding All Native Circle Presbytery for Ontario and Quebec Great Lakes Waterways. It clearly identifies where we are living out our faith to us and to others.

On January 1st, 2019, Clifford Pastoral Charge will no longer be part of Bruce Presbytery or Hamilton Conference. We will be a Community of Faith of Region 8.

Newsletters are being sent by email to Pastoral Charges and former Presbytery Reps (now Regional Reps) to help us get to know the new structure and the personnel of Region 8.

If you would like to receive these newsletters by email, contact the church office and they will be forwarded to you. A printed copy will be posted on the bulletin boards.

You can also connect with them and other information on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by searching: Region 8 United Church of Canada.

Photographers - The United Church is also looking for photos of churches, inside and out, for their 2020 Calendar.

The deadline is December 30, 2018 and you will also be given an honorarium of $100 for each

September

The congregation welcomed worship leaders to the pulpit in September.

Janna Dodds led worship the first Sunday. She hoped everyone would think good thoughts, walk in the Spirit, and spend quality time with the Word. A time of food and fellowship followed the service.

Worship leader Sheila Burns believes people find it hard to change, but feels if you are open to life and listen anew, the Spirit will touch your heart, and your faith and deeds will be as one.

Alieda Murray led hymn sing accompanied by pianist Sharon Prieb.

Chris Beaumont feels God is seeking us, teaching us how to love through the daily readings of the scriptures. Love God with all your heart, soul, and strength.

Rev. Art Hiley wants everyone to look to God and trust in Him, let go of worries, slow down, focus on the here and now, and enjoy the life God has given to you.

Karon Falk spoke about making connections, making a difference, and celebrating by helping others. God’s love is near to bring joy, hope, and peace.

Rev. Hiley will continue visiting many on the prayer list and those who have requested a visit. Contact secretary Ellen Underwood at 519-327-8378 or [email protected] for further information or to reserve a visit with Rev. Art Hiley.

October

Members of Adult Fellowship enjoyed the story and flavours of the Raw Carrot project at their meeting October 4 with Janice Benson.

World Communion Sunday on October 7 was also Thanksgiving Sunday. Gail Clarkson DM led the service and communion. Gratitude in our lives turns what we have into enough and brings us joy. Live with an attitude of gratitude and make every day a day of thanksgiving.

Chris Beaumont returned on October 14 to continue his reflection on seeking and loving God with all your heart, mind, and strength. As you move closer to God, you will find you will be more Christ-like.

The annual evening of supper and song featured a men’s a cappella ensemble ‘Heritage of Faith’. 17 men blended their voices to create a harmonious and joyful gift to the Lord.

Karon Falk

On October 21, the service started with the piano dedication by Marion Douglas and Alieda Murray in memory of Ruth and Ray Wightman.

‘We dedicate this piano to the glory of God.’ Worship leader Margaret Hern spoke of the Seven Wonders of the World, the new world wonders, and seven wonders from a heart of a child. She shared stories of eggs and hens marvelling at the beauty and creation in a hen house. She believes in the healing power of laughter and the joy of music.

Eight UCW ladies ventured to the Gorge for lunch, then the Wellington County Museum to view ‘Wightman, the first 110 years’ display. The vintage telephones, antique switchboards, informative phone conversations, photos, telephone pole and spikes, and life size cut-outs of brothers and co-owners Blair and Paul Wightman were well worth the travel to Fergus.

On October 28, Peace/Reformation Sunday, Rev. Art Hiley mentioned how life’s problems can scar everyone and may darken a life if left unhealed. Triumph over life’s suffering and let God’s healing be shared with others.

Contact the office at 327-8378 if you would like a visit from Rev. Art Hiley.

November

The Holly Berry Bazaar welcomed people to shop for crafts and baking, to place bids on the silent auction items on November 2 and to also enjoy lunch on Saturday. Upstairs in the Fellowship Hall, people were invited to browse ‘Christmas at

Grandma’s House – a collection of nativities’ presented by the Alsfeldt United Church.

The knitting tree is up waiting to be decorated with your new knitted items of toques, mittens, scarves, and socks handmade or purchased.

All Saints Sunday began with Sheila Burns leading the entry into the celebration for Indigenous people. Love God and love your neighbours. Notice those hurting in the community and respond in love. Many stayed to enjoy food and fellowship following the service.

Page 8: Winter NEWSLETTER 2018 - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · Carols and Readings led by Leigh McIntosh & Beth-Ann Weppler Thursday, December 27 2:30 pm Worship Service at Caressant Care,

Ron Cook placed the memorial wreath at the Service of Remembrance at the community hall on November 4.

Jack Ward played his trumpet and his wife played the piano for the Remembrance Day service at Knox. Paul Knierim reflected on the atrocities of war and the brave men and women who joined forces to fix the injustices of war. The hope is to learn from our mistakes so war will not ever happen again.

At 5:03 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, the church bell rang 100 times in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice to bring an end to World War 1. Judith Anne Douglas organized the event and provided hot chocolate and cookies. Hugh Douglas handed the bell rope to adults and children. He was quite surprised to see one little child lifted right up along with the rope.

Chris Beaumont told the children to love with all their hearts and God will continue to bless them with love unending. He asked the adults to recall their first love, an image of heavenly love from the Father above. Be generous and faithful and share your love.

Lorne Underwood and Jennifer Devlin and several volunteers decorated a float for the Santa Claus parade hosted by the Clifford Firefighters Association. Children and adults sang ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ all throughout the parade to capture the

second place prize. Lorne Underwood and Ken Armstrong handed out candy canes and invitations to join Elaine Field and Brenda Cummings for hot chocolate and home baked cookies after the parade at Knox. Earlier in the week, Claude Field, Larry Nancekivell, and Ross Derbecker set up the nativity displays.

Chris Beaumont and his wife Betty

On November 22, Shirley Boonstra and Brenda Tubman enlightened the ladies at the UCW meeting about helping young girls reach their parenting potential at Ramoth House in Mount Forest.

On Reign of Christ Sunday, Rev. Art Hiley had the privilege of baptising Gabi Taylor Gillies, daughter of Nicole and Steve. There is a basic need to feel a sense of belonging, to be needed. God invites you to be His and to become the person you were meant to be in this world. Marion Douglas presented her with a children’s Bible and a rose bud. As the candle was lit, Rev. Hiley invited the parents to light the candle this day each year and explain her baptism. Share Jesus with others, he is a place to call home. Everyone stayed to enjoy a sandwich luncheon.

November is ‘Jeans for Jesus’ month. You were invited to wear your jeans to church and support the Mission and Service Fund with your loose offering.

The Raw Carrot Project

Members of Adult Fellowship met on Thursday, October 4 at the Knox United Church in Clifford.

Eleanore Gerber read a story about adjusting your view of life to get more positive results, be thankful, be creative, and pass along a smile. Sheila and Frank Dickinson shared lessons learned and generational sayings for the over-60 crowd. Eunice Bosumworth shared answers in 1 Thessalonians 5 to the question, ‘What is God’s will for me?’

Guest speaker Janice Benson is co/managing director of The Raw Carrot Soup Enterprise with Brenda Rawlings. They are ‘peeling for change’ and preparing a variety of gourmet soups at the Mount Forest United Church. This social enterprise reaches out to ‘stir up meaningful employment for individuals on social assistance’.

Four employees, seven keen to work, and several volunteers meet once a week to chop, cook, cool, package, freeze, and sell signature carrot soup, flying noodle, hearty lentil and barley, loaded potato, spicy-ish sausage and cabbage, veggie mania, and seasonal varieties. Janice finds unexpected blessings are numerous including a supportive community, project sponsorship, and outlets for the soup. Sponsors include the Mount Forest United Church, The United Church of Canada, Kindred Credit Union, the Lions Club of Mount Forest, H. Bye Construction, and Vintex. Soup is available for sale at Harriston Packing Co., Holstein General Store, Chickory Common in Durham, and Meat the Butcher in Mount Forest, and on Tuesdays Only at the church - 175 Queen Street East in Mount Forest.

Wes Gerber offered a prayer of thanks before the committee served up steaming bowls of signature carrot soup and flying noodle soup, along with homemade tea biscuits, chocolates, and tasty squares.

Adult Fellowship meet the first Thursday of each month at the Knox United Church in Clifford. All are welcome.

Heritage of Faith Singers

The blended voices of 17 men singing a cappella in the sanctuary at the Knox United Church in Clifford on Friday, October 19 was truly wonderful to behold.

Heritage of Faith’, a men’s a capella ensemble loves to sing and honour God with their voices. They invited everyone to sing ‘Come Children, Come to Sing’, before beginning their selection of gospel songs and hymns. The energy and strength of their voices was awe-inspiring. The harmony and expression in every song was incredible. They are a group of singers you hope you will hear again. Their presentation was impressive and well deserved of the standing ovation.

Their artistic director Wendell Glick of Waterloo explained that ten years ago, they joined together to sing a few Christmas hymns. There are sons and fathers in our group and we live all throughout the area. We have a constant love of Jesus and love to sing about our Lord and Saviour.

Members include Chad Bauman of Moorefield, Rick Bauman of Millbank, Daniel Brubacher of Linwood, Jordan Drudge of Wroxeter, Justus Drudge of Wroxeter, James Gingrich of Drayton, Christopher Good of New Hamburg, Mike Good of New Hamburg, Darcy Jantzi of Walton, Grant Lichti of Harriston, Allen Martin of Wingham, Gerald Martin of St. Clements, Kendall Roth of Millbank, Phil Roth lives by Anna May’s, Mike Shrock of Millbank, and Darrel Wagler of Millbank.

Page 11: Winter NEWSLETTER 2018 - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · Carols and Readings led by Leigh McIntosh & Beth-Ann Weppler Thursday, December 27 2:30 pm Worship Service at Caressant Care,

Wendell Glick expressed his appreciation for the delicious meal and the hospitality saying it was a blessing to be in Clifford.

A meal of ham and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed before the concert prepared and served by Marg Shannon, Bruce Shannon, Marion Douglas, Sharon Prieb, Paisley Scheeringa, Karen Dowler, and Lorne Underwood.

Piano Dedication at Knox

On October 21, board chairperson Marion Douglas and former choir director Alieda Murray led the dedication of the parlour grand piano in remembrance of Ruth and Ray Wightman. Pianist Sharon Prieb and organist Judith Anne Douglas played a duet and provided special music throughout the service led by Margaret Hern. The congregation was happy to share the celebration with Blair Wightman and son Ben and Mary Wightman and husband Dave Finkbeiner. Many had known Ray and Ruth and recalled her years of singing in the choir.

Holly Berry Bazaar

The Holly Berry Bazaar hosted by the United Church Women (UCW) was held on November 2 and 3 at the Knox United Church in Clifford.

Several people stopped to shop following the Rotary pork and sauerkraut supper on the Friday evening looking for crafts, baking, and entering bids in the silent auction.

On Saturday, 80 people took time to enjoy the soup and sandwich luncheon along with shopping for those unique one-of-a-kind seasonal homemade crafts, pot scrubbies, knitted items, wreaths, and Christmas baking of pies, cakes, cookies, fudge, and preserves.

Page 12: Winter NEWSLETTER 2018 - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · Carols and Readings led by Leigh McIntosh & Beth-Ann Weppler Thursday, December 27 2:30 pm Worship Service at Caressant Care,

The silent auction tables were filled with books, pictures, games, toys, and a remarkable outdoor snowman design lighted display.

Upstairs, Margaret Hern and her daughter Beth-Ann Weppler set up a display of 130 nativity scenes. Over the years, the collection was welcomed into the family and is set out each and every

Christmas. Some were handcrafted and created out of wood, wool, fabric, glass, china, paper, metal, and pewter. Some had a traditional look while others captured a childish theme with a woodland feel. The ladies served hot apple cider and homemade Christmas cookies to accentuate the spirit and scents of the holiday season.

The UCW ladies appreciate all the shoppers, the donated items, and all the help to make this event a wonderful venture and celebration of the season.

Saturday Worship

Christian Education leader Jennifer Devlin and Kathryn Rehorst with help from Joanne Schrac continue to lead children in Saturday worship programs through stories, games, crafts, and verse.

While children continue to gather, they greet each child and share happenings in their lives.

In September, they talked about a lost coin and how God rejoices when the lost are found. They created a picture using foam shapes trying to find the hidden treasure.

Page 13: Winter NEWSLETTER 2018 - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com · Carols and Readings led by Leigh McIntosh & Beth-Ann Weppler Thursday, December 27 2:30 pm Worship Service at Caressant Care,

In October, they created pumpkins with paper plates and created tractor pictures with the soles of their painted feet.

This was to remind them to thank a farmer for bountiful crops and food that fills our plates.

In November, they heard a poem about a donkey, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. They created paper donkey puppets and decorated gift boxes.

They play relay games and find the pieces to the memory verse. They close each day with the game sardines. It just wouldn’t be the same without sardines.

They are thankful for Dianne Epworth and Margaret Shannon who prepare the hot dog lunch with ice-cream sundaes for dessert.

Clifford Food Bank

‘Tis the season for giving and forgiving, for joy and seeing the joy in the eyes of

children. It is a wonderful time to remember that some families could use a boost over the

holiday season to enjoy all the bounty and blessings of the season.

You are invited to support the Clifford Food Bank 2018 Christmas Hamper Program -

food for families and presents under the tree for children aged one to 16.

Last year, 23 families enjoyed the generosity of a caring community. This year again,

there are families in need who will receive a holiday hamper filled with food for a festive

meal, as well as groceries to tide them over a couple weeks. Younger children will

receive a gift while older children will receive gift cards.

Trying to make Christmas merry for everyone in need is made possible

with donations from you. For your convenience, there is a gift box at Miller

Insurance to fill with food and toys. Donations are also accepted at the Knox

United Church.

Your gifts and thoughtfulness are appreciated. Merry Christmas!

Knox Ushers 2019 Thank you to all of you who have participated as an usher and have welcomed our church family to Sunday service at our church throughout the year! Your role as usher is an important one to everyone who walks into our church!

I have included a schedule of the people who have served as ushers throughout the past year. Please review and let me know if changes need to be made for the 2019 schedule. There are several “open” spots, so if you are available to help and your name isn’t included, please let me know. I realize that other commitments come up and if you need a replacement on short notice please call me and I will fill in the spot. There are Sundays when we have been short a person and I appreciate those of you who have come forward and filled the role for that Sunday! We are very adaptable!

If you need to review the responsibilities, please check the list at the front entrance. Most important - you should be at the back of the church for 10:45 am to usher worshippers into our church. Gathering collection and assisting in counting the collection after the service is also part of the job.

Thank you for being a part of the Sunday service! Your gift of service is greatly appreciated!
