The guard has had to rise above these challenges and improve k J themselves as performers. John (the designer of the show) used these challenges to improve every one of the member's skills. He challenged the guard this year unlike any in the past through certain aspects of the show, and even through some of the basics and warm ups.

This year's show was to the song "Morning Passages" composed by Philip Glass. The song was from the movie "The Hours" which is what the guard show was based upon. In the movie, there are three women whose lives intertwine in one way or another. John used this aspect of the movie throughout the show. The movie also shows how the lives of the three women change. To represent the aspect of change, at two points in the show the guard actually rotated the floor, switching seasons. Fall was at the top and spring at the bottom.

Overall, the guard had a very successful season. They received higher scores than previous years, and they placed fifth of twelve with a score of 73.2 at state finals.

There is more to the music program than playing the national anthem and performing during assemblies. Music requires dedication, perseverance, and a positive attitude. Students spend hours

perfecting their own abilities, which adds to the success of the group as a whole. Despite their sophisticated repertoire and commitment to their programs, their sincere dedication needed to perform is offset by the upbeat and quirky relationships between the students. Where would the music program be with out hard working individuals perfecting their abilities and being the best at concerts and competitions?

Playing during assemblies, concerts, and competitions and practicing until their fingers are numb and their breath has run out is the life of an orchestra/band student. While most people only know the band and orchestra for playing at formal concerts and a yearly Christmas concert, there is much more to Band and Orchestra. Commitment and discipline are an important part of most of these students' lives.
