4-time World Champion swimmer Karen Pickering MBE gave an inspi-

rational speech

Barnhill’s Academic Awards 2014 took place on the evening of Thursday 16 October.

In Barnhill tradition, the event took place in the Beck Theatre where students received their awards from the last academic year.

As well as students, parents, teachers and the Worshipful Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Catherine Dann all at-tended to celebrate the success of Barnhill students.

Award categories included Attainment and Progress in a subject, Key Stage Award and the prestigious Headteacher Award for those students who have performed outstandingly. Students received a certificate and medal for their

achievements.

Entertainment for the evening came from performances from our very own Barnhill students in the form of dance performances and two strong vocal performances from Lizzy Bajegbo and Fay Davidson.

We were also treated to an inspirational speech from Olympic swimmer Karen Pickering who told us of her ca-reer and the struggles she overcame to achieve her goals.

The evening was a great success with over 100 students receiving awards.

Karen Pickering MBEDuring her 20-year international career, Karen Pickering has won 35 major championship medals and 38 National titles despite breaking her back in a car accident in 1996. Remarkably, Karen persevered to become the first British swimmer to win a World Championship title in 1998. That same year she won three silver medals at Kuala Lumpur’s Commonwealth Games. Karen is a four-time World champion; she has broken two World Records and competed at four consecutive Olympic Games (1992 – 2004).

For her services to swimming Karen was awarded an MBE in the 1994 New Year’s Honours List. She was recently honoured at the Commonwealth Games England Champions Club Dinner with a Lifetime Achievement Award recognising her long career in swimming.

Our trip to Whipsnade ZooWhen we arrived at Whipsnade on Friday 21 November, we walked into the Discovery Centre and attended a fascinating workshop.

The Zoo Keeper told us about the endangered animals and we learnt that scientists count animals in the wild to find out if they’re endangered or not. The Zoo Keeper also had a snake, which she got out and let us touch.

After the workshop we went to the Africa area. We went inside the giraffes house to watch them being fed. We learnt that Giraffes only sleep 3 hours a day and are very protective over their young.

Another highlight of the day included seeing the lions. They were magnificent creatures and looked like they were dying to get past the glass to get at us!

One lion slowly walked over to us and started to interact with me by sliding its paws across the glass as I was doing the same.

I had a really good day and learnt alot about animals. I would recommend everyone to go to Whipsnade Zoo!

Year 7 & 8 students kindly partook in the Barnhill Winter Crafts Clubs creating exciting pieces to be sold at this year’s

Winter Festival.

Both clubs were run as part of the Creative Design extra-

curricular program. The Creative Design team would like to thank students for working so hard and producing such excellent pieces!

Lunch Service for Staff

One of the many fundraising events hosted by the Habitat for Humanity team was to serve Barnhill Staff a homemade lunch on our INSET day!

Student’s gave up their free time to cook, host and serve a special lunch exclusively for staff, all for only £5.00 a head!

The meal comprised of chicken or vegetable biriyani which was then followed by dessert. Staff were so im-pressed, they are requesting a Friday takeaway service! (Watch this space!)

£700 was raised, bringing the total amount so far to £1000.

S.T.E.M is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Mathematics

which are subjects deemed be integral to the UK’s

success.

Y7 STEM Challenge

Y7 students were challenged to research a famous scientist, mathmatician or engi-neer and present a poster, presentation or short essay in order to win a prize from the Maths department.

The three judges, Mr. J. Ledwidge, Mrs. S. Kauser and Mr. R. Dutta were overwhelmed by the number of entries .

From all of Year 7, three students were shortlisted and will be presenting their findings in their assembly. The final winner will then be chosen by a panel of teachers and awarded the top prize.

Congratulations to Shay 7.8, Amal 7.3 and Laiybha 7.5. for reaching the Top 3!

The Prince’s Trust students took part in Operation Christmas Child once again this year. They managed to make and fill 20 boxes full of gifts which will be sent to children in Mozambique in time for Christmas.

The students worked really hard promoting and campaigning throughout the school during November. This included making posters, giving out flyers and hosting presentations in assemblies. 200 cakes were also made and sold by the students to pay for all the posting and packaging of the boxes to Mozambique.

We received a great response from many students and staff, who were all very generous with their donations.

82 students from Y9 to 11embarked on a 3 day geography fieldtrip to Cromer in mid-November. The trip consisted of work towards the student’s controlled assessment and a range of exciting activities.

The students started the trip by collecting a range of data along the River Glaven. This involved students being actually in the river for a long time in waders with the water up to their waists. It was only after the student volunteers realised that the waders were not quite as water-tight as they looked!

In the evening, the students analysed their collected data from the day and then had a go at fencing! Students then had some free time to wind down and relax, during which many of the staff were surprised to find out some of the hidden talents that our students have including a rapper and several singers!

On the coach journey home, the enthusiastic students had high spirits and treated the staff to a impromtu rendition of Go Go Banana!

Many thanks to all the staff who volunteered their time to go on the trip - the students all greatly appreciate it!

Eight Year 12 students have been successful in getting accepted onto the competitive ‘Futures’ programme run in conjunction with TeachFirst.

Congratulations to Zeerak Jawed, Anisa Mohamud, Balmeet Gulati, Mohammad Ahmed, Suad Kahin, Utkarsh Aneja, Amran Yussuf and Ricky Ghedia.

The ‘Futures’ programme (formally HEAPS) was nominated in the category for ‘Best Outreach Programme’ last

Y12 Futures

Programmeyear and was also declared the runner up in the Deputy Prime Minister’s Excellence Award which highlights the quality of the programme. Students benefit from having a top class mentor, and will also will get the opportunity to spend a week at Oxford or Cambridge university (overnight stay) to get a taste of university life!

Well done to six of our Y9 students: Bhavina Chhiba, George Davidson, Rawan Ibrahim, Najat Hassan, Iman Kore and Jayani Samarakoon for competing against other local schools in the Target Mars Science competition at Brunel University.

The task involved designing and building a craft to land on Mars. They all worked extremely hard, with George recieving extra points for his detailed drawing. The team also took part in a biological blood typing exercise and did particularly well.

Overall, they finished fourth out of six teams. The competition was very tough and the closeness of the final scores reflected this.

Brunel’s Target Mars Competition

University Awareness Day44 students from Years 11 and 12 went to Brunel University to find out

more about student life.

They met undergraduate students who shared their personal experiences of university life and had a tour of the campus where they were able to see unviersity accomodation as well as the huge indoor running track where Usain Bolt likes to train when he is in the UK!

One thing most of our students weren’t aware of was appling for schlorships. They learned that it could be a really useful way to reduce the high cost of tuition fees!

The vast majority of our students said the visit had given them lots to think about, made them want to go to university even more and had motivated them to work harder at school in order to get there.

Look out for more Brunel Events in the future!
