A word from our President! I am extremely humbled and honored to announce that our new Officers & Board Members are in place which we announced at our January 2014 Music Event! Board Members, so if your interested in a great and ful-filling position with MAS, please let us know! In addition to our new Officers & Board, I am also proud to announce that we have been seeing a lot of great and positive things happening with our Society and the best news is that we are growing and are seeing people walk-ing into our Monthly Music Events and joining our Society. At least once or twice a week we are getting e-mails from new people asking about accordion repairs, teachers and asking for more information about our Society and want-ing to visit us! Also, very pleased to advise that we are seeing great ac-tivity on our Facebook page. We have had a huge in-
crease in Facebook traffic with well over 100 new “Likes” That is up nearly 100 percent since December of 2013. We set a goal to achieve 500 “L ikes” on our Facebook Page by the end of the year, so we need your help to please use Face book and send out invitations to your Fa-cebook friends that will appreciate great music and won-derful accordion information that we offer. We have added some great new links to our website as well so make sure you visit www.michignaccordion.org. I would like to thank our great webmaster Mr. Bob Stead that is always there to help make this a great Society with all his last minute updates on our Webpage!
We need your help to please renew your memberships that have expired on December 31st 2013. NOVEMEBER 2013 MUSIC EVENT FEATURED
STAS VENGLEVSKI AND MISHA LITWIN
Stas Venglevski and Misha Litwin played for a large enthusiastic audience at our November, 2013 month-ly music event. Stas plays “Bayan” (Russian style button accordion) and Misha plays a “Dorma” which is a Russian style mandolin. We have heard Stas in solo concerts a few times and the duet twice. We were very impressed with both their outstanding talent and stage presence. Besides writing outstanding arrangements of var-ious selections, Stas is also a first rate composer. Their performance was brought to a high level by their banter back and forth with each other, and with the audience. This was a terrific concert…..the music was wonderful and the audience recognized it with loud applause and many standing ovations. We hope to have them back again in the future!

OCTOBER 2013 PETER SOAVE FEATURED
WITH DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND MORE
MAS Member — Peter Soave, was featured in a special concert with members of the Detroit Symphony Or-chestra recently. Many members attended the event and were delighted to hear the DSO recognizing the fine musicianship of Peter and the gorgeous music he and the orchestra performed. The concert was nearly sold out with nearly 300 people in attendance. The Michigan Accordion Society would like to thank the Detroit Symphony's and WDET 101.9 FM Radio Administration and Management team for bringing Maestro Peter Soave here all the way from France to open up the DSO’s 2014 Mix and the Max Season. Peter was exceptional with his selection of pieces and the DSO musicians did a wonderful job in presenting Peter's portfolio of arrangements that were done tastefully and with amazing grace and class! Peter did an amazing job entertaining the audience between musical pieces that really engaged the audience very well. There were several professional Tango dancers that also helped entertain the audience stage right dance floor as well. It was a wonderful and intimate setting that earned Mr. Soave many stand-ing ovations and many of our members were very proud to be witness to this exquisite concert. The great news is that we now have many new Accordion fans in Michigan which will be very nice not only for the Instrument but for the Michigan Accordion Society as well

FRANK PETRILLI PEFORMS FOR MAS ON MAY 20th
Frank Petrilli was born and still lives in Los Angeles, California. He started playing the accordion at age 7 and by age 16 was playing professionally. As the popularity of the accordion declined in the US, Frank switched to playing Ham-
mond B# Organ and the saxophone for about 15 years. In 2006, he returned to the accordion and started playing with the César Mateus Latin Jazz Band at many jazz venues throughout the Los Angeles area.
In late 2006, Frank began intensive study with the great jazz accordionist Frank Morocco which quickly evolved into a very close friendship. By virtue of their close relationship and mutual love of jazz, Frank Petrilli became Frank Moroc -co’s protégé and Frank Morocco often commented that Frank Petrilli was like the son he never had. Unfortunately, this relationship ended far too soon with Frank Morocco’s untimely passing on March 3, 2012. Later that year at the end of
summer, Frank performed at the “festival internazionale fisarmonica castelfidardo” which is one of the most prestigious festivals in Europe.
As Frank Petrilli’s reputation grew as an excellent player in the jazz community, he began performing frequently in the Los Angeles area with renowned artists such as guitarist John Chiodini. With these artists, Frank has been regularly featured at top venues such as “Herb Albert’s” club called Vibrato Jazz and Grill. Frank also performed at many of the major accordion festivals and clubs in the US including the 2011 AAA Festival in Charleston, SC, the San Francisco Ac-
cordion Club (several times), and the Cotati Accordion festival in the summer of 2013.
In October of 2011, Frank appeared on the TV series Mad Men. In May of 2012 (photo above), he was invited to play in the spot that Frank Marocco had been scheduled for as a featured performer at the Accordion competition in Kiev, “Accofestival 2012.” Frank was also one of the judges for the jazz portion of the competition. Immediately following the competition in Kiev, he performed at the Frank Marocco Memorial Concert in Castelfidardo, Italy with many other stars of the accordion world. Frank’s debut CD, “Totally Frank,” produced by Elke Ahrenholz of “Artist Signed Rec-ords”, was recorded in Italy during this trip. Accompanying Frank on this CD were three celebrated Italian musicians, Felice Del Gaudio, Mas Ferri and Fabio Zeppetella. In this CD you will definitely hear the influences of Frank Marocco, however Frank Petrilli plays his own style which includes more focus on Latin grooves.
2014 will be a busy one for Frank as he will be performing in April, via the invitation of Joe Petosa, at the Northwes t Accordion Society in Seattle. In May, he will be playing for the Michigan Accordion Society, and in July Frank will be one of the headliners of the ATG Festival in San Francisco. In September, Frank will perform for the Washington Met-ropolitan Accordion Society. Of course, Frank will continue to play locally in Los Angeles as the “Frank Petrilli quartet at numerous jazz venues.
As the booking agent and artistic director of the Vibrato Jazz Club, Pat Senator wrote, “Like his mentor, Petrilli gives new life to the accordion with impeccable phrasing and a smooth, fluid style. You will enjoy the music styling's of Frank’s accordion, both in concert and on his CD, and can expect some very good music coming from him in the fu-ture. ACCORDION RESURGENCE “SO HOT NOW”
When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame fetes Krist Novoselic later this year, it'll be well-timed recog-nition. Not for his band—Nirvana certainly doesn't need the publici-ty—but for his instrument. He may be the first accordionist ever in-ducted, an honor that comes at a time when the accordion is experi-encing a striking resurgence in popularity. Proudly accordion-centric acts like Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, and The Lumineers win Grammies and top chart spots. Older ones, like Flogging Molly, They Might Be Gi-ants, and Neutral Milk Hotel, now enjoy cherished-cult-icon status. In 2009, Carnegie Hall hosted its first solo accordion performance in 30 years. Accordion diehards and retailers say it really does feel like a come-back for the instrument, whose previous heyday ended in the ‘60s. What’s surprising isn’t so much that the accordion’s hip now; it’s how culturally dominant it used to be. European immigrants introduced the instrument to the US in the 1800s, but it really started to take off shortly before World War I. “It was considered very cool,” said Joan Grauman, a board member and histori-an for the American Accordionists ’ Association. “Beautiful actresses were portrayed in cigarette ads holding a gorgeous accordion and a cigarette.” In 1922, Italian immigrant Carlo Petosa founded the Petosa Accordion Company in the basement of his home. It joined the scores of s imilar stores and schools popping up all over the country. “Some towns had as many as four accordion schools in a couple of blocks,” said Grauman, who also added that by the 1950s the accordion was likely one of the most studied instruments in the country. By 1938, the AAA was founded in New York, and its first president, Pietro Deiro, became fondly known as the “daddy of the accordion.” The group’s initial goal was to show the public that the instrument was as serious as any other. A year later, it succeeded by helping to facilitate the first-ever accordion performance at Carnegie Hall.
Actress Christina Hendricks who plays Joan in “Mad Men” is no
new comer to the accordion she has been playing for a few years in LA and loves the instrument!
Actress Mary Steen-burgen is another Accordion Player, Here husband Ted Danza purchased this Accordion for her nearly 1 year ago on Valentines day. She has ben playing it
ever since !
Even Snowmen Play the Accordion!

ACCORDION RESURGENCE CONTINUED
The Petosa Accordion Company survives till today, as the only US-owned-and-operated accordion manufacturer around. Many of its rivals started to die out as rock and roll came to prominence in the ‘60s. Acts like The Beatles popularized the guitar-drums-vocals setup that remained the pop-culture standard for decades to come, though ironically, according to Grauman, both Elvis and John Lennon played the accordion before beginning the guitar. Davis believes the rise in popularity of the accordion has a lot to do with today’s anything-goes music industry, en-abled by the Internet and the waning of major labels ’ influence. Petosa’s clientele has transitioned over the decades from early-century players who were trained in classical accor-dion from a young age, to lone solo accordionists pursuing it as a hobby, to, now, players affiliated with musical groups. Nirvana’s Novoselic just stopped in the store a few months ago. Owner Joseph M. Petosa said the age of customers has also changed, with 60 percent now under the age of 30, whereas 10 years ago it was only 10 per-cent. And over the last three years, “we’re almost selling more accordions then we’re making,” Petosa said. The company has responded to demand by introducing a second, cheaper line of instruments. Shenandoah Davis is one of the recent musicians to join the accordion world. The 28-year-old grew up playing classical piano and studied opera performance in college. She discovered the accordion s ix years ago, and after only a few days playing it, was swept up into a country-rock band called Jack Wilson and the Wife Stealers. Davis believes the rise in popularity of the accordion has a lot to do with today’s anything-goes music industry, en-abled by the Internet. “I think in general people have felt a little bit braver about what kind of music they’re creat-ing,” she said, “and more interested in stepping outside of the realm of what pop or rock music is supposed to sound like.” There’s also the fact that the instrument is in line with the so-called “retromania” of the new millennium. While the accordion is, as Petrosa says, “one of the only instruments that’s basically found in every style of music throughout the world,” it’s largely associated with European and American folk music. Which, of course, is cool again, as seen in the popularity of acts like Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters and Men. Jamie Maschler, who has worked for the Petosa Accordion Company for a little over two years, knows the versatili-ty of the accordion better then most. She has played the instrument s ince she was four, when a door-to-door salesman brought a kid-s ize accordion to her Colorado Springs home. She spent years perfecting and competing with pieces by such challenging classical composers as Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, but has since discovered her love of the collaborative, rock and pop musical scene. Now, in addition to her work at Petosa, she focuses her time not on classical music, but on performing with a number of alternative bands. Talents like her seem to be increasingly valuable. Gabe Hall-Rodrigues of the band Jared & The Mill says that while busking at the music festival at South by Southwest this past year, a number of agents approached him about their needing an accordionist for studio work or to play with a band. “It shows that stuff is going on,” he said. “And if anything, there’s not enough young accordionists to meet the demand of some of these things.” From the Atlantic -Hallie Golden Jan. 9, 2014

Accordion News
REMEMBERING ACCORDION LEGEND CARL FORTINA May 2, 1929—Jan. 30, 2014 You may not know him, but you certainly have heard his mu-sic, he is the world most recorded Accordionist!!!!! Carl Fortina sadly passed away recently in California. He did more for the accordion in films and TV than anyone else not only because he worked more films and TV than anyone else, but because he developed a reference book for the film TV composers-arrangers- orchestrators for that very purpose. This caused more work to happen for himself and others af-ter him. Because of Carl Fortina we heard more accordion work in films and TV and it was he that we heard make those sounds of Accordion…and...Bass Accordion…until he decided to be-come a musician contractor for Paramount Studios...but he still did some performing when needed. One of his first hires was Frank Marocco. Carl was on the soundtracks for ‘How the West was Won’. Godfather’, ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s ’, ‘Love Me Tender’, Star Trek’, ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and another 600 or more films plus Countless TV shows and ads and recordings. To many people the accordion is a silent hidden instrument. Thanks to Carl and Frank Marocco and others who have followed their path, the accordion is now heard in film and TV work. We have Carl Fortina to thank as the trailblazer in this effort. Thank you for all the wonderful Music…..Rest in peace Carl! So perhaps the next time you hear the Godfather Waltz, think of Carl Fortina……………The man who made it a mem-orable piece for accordion players all over. Thank you for all the beautiful music Mr. Fortina! Rest in Peace!

OPEN MIKE CLUBS
Many of our members enjoy attending not only MAS but OPEN MIKE clubs in the area. There are two outstanding Open Mike clubs that are particularly popular with our members locally. An OPEN MIKE club has attendees sign up to play 2-3 tunes when they arrive. On any given night you will hear just about every possible type of instrument, different types of music such as folk, country, jazz, classical, and some light pop music. The performers skill level ranges from the low end to a few professionals but everyone supports all the players whatever their ability and it is common for attendees to get together for future duets, com-bos, etc. Membership ages ranges from young to “well seasoned” and are family friendly events. THE SHELBY MUSIC SOCIETY Meets the second Saturday of each month from 7:00-10:00pm at the Shelby Senior Center Auditorium on Van Dyke near 23 Mile Rd. in the rear of the city library. Admission is by donation. Attendees often bring deserts to share at the break.
THE STARK WEATHER ARTS CENTER IN ROMEO meets at 219 N. Main St. on the fourth Friday of each month from 7:00 to 10:00pm. Admission is $4 for non-members and $3 for members. For more info see our partnership link http://www.michiganaccordion.org/partners.html

MAS MUSIC PAGE FEATURING GREAT ACCODION MUSIC!
This months music selection is a novelty piece by Mozart. To play you place it on a table between two people. The per-son on one side plays from the top as they see it...and the person on the other side plays it from the top as they see it...makes a duet! These type of novelties were quite popular in those days. If you don’t have a buddy to play with handy...try recording one part and than playing along for the second part while listening to the recording played back.
