Capital Key Clubbers!

Hey, it’s Gary again with another update from International. I hope school is going smoothly for everyone. I’m sure you all aced your finals. A lot has happened in the past couple of months in Key Club International, so let’s jump right on in.

In October, the International board set a goal of saving 777,777 lives this Kiwanis year. This equates to raising a grand total of 1.4 million dollars, or having every Key Clubber raise $5.40 to save 3 lives. Currently, Key Club has raised US$530,572.06 dollars for the Eliminate Project since 10/01/14. It’s the final year of the Eliminate Project, so let’s end it with a bang! We are almost to our goal, so let’s all do our part! The International Board is selling Eliminate themed pens at each DCON so look forward to that. In the mean time however, if you feel like you have run out of ideas for fundraising projects, check out this Eliminate Project fundraising idea booklet.

At the International Board Meeting this past January, each International committee had time to work on their directives. The Education and Development Committee had finished revising Distinguished Executive Awards, finished making the 100 things to do in Indy resource, and has finished revamping the service project directory. They are currently working to plan an upcoming webinar about International Convention. The Growth and Communications Committee has finished putting together the Re-cruitment, Reputation, and Retention webinar. They are currently working on ana-lyzing the validity of the Key Club Magazine and putting together a ‘We are Family’ Kiwanis family video to be shown at DCONs and ICON.

That wraps up my quick update on what has happened in International. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask. Feel free to email me at [email protected]. Have a fantastic day!

GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Capital District,

It is with a heavy heart that I address you for one final time. As the month of March comes to an end, so do the terms for District Officers. I am saddened that I did not have the opportunity to personally get to meet all the incredible individuals that make up Capital District, the true faces of our organization. I sincerely hope you have experienced all the benefits Key Club International has to offer; from the Youth Op-portunity Grant, Key Leader and even our Annual District Convention. Know that your dues are being put to good use and it is wasteful for you to not take advantage of so many opportunities.

Capital District this year has had an incredible year of service. We have raised a ground breaking total of funds for Project Eliminate, volunteered more service hours than in the years past, and have been a part of a worldwide celebration for the Ki-wanis Family. As a District Board, we have made many improvements to the oper-ation of this District including creating an interactive map of all the clubs in Capital District, holding webinars for potential District Office candidates as well as converting to an online monthly report system for the convenience of club officers. We are so excited to welcome members from all around MD, VA, DE and Washington DC for a whole weekend of celebrating service and learning how to better our clubs. I am looking forward seeing familiar faces & meeting many new individuals in less than two weeks!

The reason Key Club International has such a strong reputation amongst the general population is because each one of you has made a lasting impression to your com-munity of just how powerful servant leadership is. Key Club continues to be a house-hold name because you represent us well as you take on challenges that face your community. And for that, I am eternally grateful. I wish the best of luck to all seniors graduating this spring- I hope you continue the path of service no matter where life takes you. As for the underclassmen, it’s not too late to get involved! Step outside of your comfort zone; run for a position, take on a service project and make new friends! I wish you all the very best, thank you for trusting me in leading this District and the extraordinary individuals it is composed of. I hope I helped create an experience you deserve.

Yours in Service,Anastasia SlephukhovaDistrict Governor

KEY LEADER

Page 7: Winter 2014 Capital Key

I stared at the loosely hung hemp rope with a countenance of disbe-lief. There’s no way I can do that! I watched with fear as my groupmates success-fully swung across to the other side without falling into the mud. It was my turn next. I closed my eyes, searching for courage.

I had arrived at Key Leader the day before, shy and scared to be spending the weekend with strangers. But, over the course of the short eve-ning that was packed with activities, strangers had become my friends. In our teams, we learned about the upside-down pyramid and servant leader-ship. We learned how to cooperate and work with one another to make an impact in the world. Even more, I had discovered myself, understanding my own personality style and the reasons behind my decisions. I had learned to be fearless, guided by examples of leaders from history who took risks that led them to success. It was a Key Leader Moment: you can’t succeed if you don’t try!

I felt courage build up inside of me and opened my eyes. I reached for the rope and heard my team cheer me on. I saw the dark mud puddle beneath me and the deep blue sky above. Although I was scared, I didn’t close my eyes this time. Instead, I felt exhilaration of taking a leap and suc-ceeding.

I returned to Key Leader the next year as a student facilitator to help others have the same experience. I had the opportunity to see others in my group grow and take risks themselves. It was Key Leader that had built my confidence, changing my life and helping me find myself.

KEY LEADER My name is Karley Copperthite, and I am President of Winters Mill’s Key Club in Division 7B. I attended a Key Leader weekend at the beautiful West River Center back in October of 2014. This weekend introduced me to leadership principles, which have helped me to better serve my home, school, and community so far throughout this year. I love how the Key Leader program is so welcoming. Everyone is warm and friendly, and the environment makes you feel at ease about being honest and sharing your own thoughts. Students learn to approach leadership by using the five key leader principles: integrity, growth, respect, community, and excellence. We also learned about the inverted triangle idea of putting the members at the top and the leader at the bottom, serving those members. Throughout the weekend, I participated in small group discussions with a handful of other students, large group discussions with all of the participants, team building exercises, and other activities that helped form close relationships with my peers. One of the most memorable moments of my Key Leader experience was on Sunday morn-ing, a little before 6am. After a long night of talking around a bonfire and stargazing, three of my new friends and I decided to meet to watch the sunrise. We watched the breathtaking sunrise paint colors over the water, and we had the opportunity to get to know each other and ourselves a little bit better. I left the weekend feeling like I could truly make a positive impact on my home, school, and community. I formed close relationships with many of the people who also attended that weekend. In addition, I left feeling more confident in who I am and in my ability to be a strong leader. If you have never been to a Key Leader weekend, I highly recommend you attend one soon and encourage your friends to do the same.

On October 18th, 2014, Capital District Key Clubbers got together for a day of fun at the Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia. It was a great day filled with laughs, screams, and surprises! It was also an opportunity where high school students were introduced of what the Key Club magic holds! My experience of Fall Rally was awesome. Before the program started, DCON Chair Brooke Saunders and Lieutenant Governor Eric Luu pumped up the auditorium with cheers and prizes from Key Club trivia! Next, formal Key Clubber Avanti Kollaram inspired Key Clubbers with her speech on the Eliminate Project as we head our final year with this charity. To end to program, Governor Anastasia Slepukhova announced the theme of the 2015 District Convention: Superheroes of Service! Afterwards, came the whole day at the amusement park! Key Clubbers got to experience the rush from roller coasters and haunted houses. It was a spectacular time hanging out with Key Club-bers from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and D.C. If you did not attend, I strongly encourage you to next year! You’ll definitely have a crabtastic time! Feel free to ask me or your Lieutenant Governor for more info on Fall Rally. I hope to see you all next year!Arshad FakharDivision 6B Lieutenant Governor

FALL RALLY

Page 10: Winter 2014 Capital Key

Hey Crabtastic Capital Crabs!

Congratulations on making it through the entire service year! This is no small feat for any-one involved, and you have finally reached District Convention. This is a fantastic time for you to celebrate all you have accomplished this year. Being a part of the Kiwanis Family is an incredible experience that I hope you take far into your life.

I wasn’t in Key Club while I was in high school, but looking back, I really wish I had been. You guys have incredible opportunities presented to you every day. Don’t miss these op-portunities to learn and grow as a servant leader. You are learning life lessons that many adults still have yet to learn. Life is so much more fulfilling when you live it serving others.

Some of you have just joined Key Club, and you have your entire high school career be-fore you. Take these next few years to grow in your understanding of servant leadership. Look to the upperclassmen, and share in their growth. Look to the Kiwanis Family mem-bers, and learn from their experiences. You have so much potential, and the only thing that is stopping you from realizing this potential is you.

Some of you have been in Key Club for a while now, and you’re getting ready to move on. Don’t forget how you spent your time in high school. Take the lessons you’ve learned and share them with everyone you meet. You can have an incredible impact on peo-ple while barely knowing it. Don’t let these lessons move on with you. Take a moment to teach an incoming member why the Kiwanis Family is amazing.

To those of you who are graduating, I wish you the best of luck in whatever you chose to do. For those of you who are going to college, know that the Kiwanis Family will wel-come you with open arms. Seek out the local Circle K club, and bring your energy with you. If you can’t find the Circle K club, then start one. Like I said, you have so much po-tential, and our organization would benefit greatly by you joining.

I hope to see you all in a Circle K club sometime soon.

Yours in Service,Benjamin RomanoCKI District Governor

CIRCLE K

KIWANIS FAMILYGet Involved with the K-Family

We are all here because we care – because we want to change lives, communities, and the world. Key Club provides us with the opportunities to do just that, but why stop there? The Kiwanis family has many other branches, each made for a specific group or purpose.

Focusing on elementary school students, we have K-Kids, Bring Up Grades (BUG), and Terrific Kids. K-Kids is a community service club that offers club activities and service events, Bring Up Grades is an academic recognition program that encourages raising grades into an acceptable range, and Terrific Kids is a student recognition program that promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance.

Middle school students may join Builder’s Club, which has nearly 40,000 members who serve their schools and communities while developing leadership and people skills.

High school students lead Key Club, the oldest and largest service organization for teens – which you’re probably an expert on already! Also available for high schoolers is Key Leader, a weekend leadership experience for youth. It’s held several times a year in many different locations, so go ahead and register for one that works for you.

Also available is Circle K, uniting college students for service, leadership, and fellow-ship. Aktion Club provides adults with disabilities hands-on service opportunities for them to give back to the community in response to the care they have received.

Last but definitely not least, there’s Kiwanis, the organization that made all of this possible. Members of Kiwanis have dedicated their lives to serving the children of the world. They sponsor and support the other clubs, sparking a passion for service all around the world.

Now that you know about all the different groups that Kiwanis involves, get to action! Charter a K-Kids chapter at your local elementary school. Extend your service events to your sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Bring Circle K to your college or university. There are so many paths you can take to bridge generations together and spread service.

Good luck on your endeavors. Remember that you are a member of our wonderful family, and you always will be.

Come join us at our annual Capital District of Key Club Convention on March 20-22 in Bal-timore, Maryland! At DCON, you can meet hundreds of Key Clubbers from around the dis-trict, attend engaging workshops, explore Baltimore, watch a talent show, and vote on next year’s district officers! This convention’s theme is Superheroes of Service, so make sure you bring your costumes to dress up for the opening ceremony. After that, look forward to a weekend of fun!

After arriving at the convention, you can expect an opening session with a giant crowd of enthusiastic Key Club members dressed up in crazy costumes, along with the Parade of Checks, where club representatives march to the stage to report the amount of money their club has raised for The Eliminate Project. To conclude that first day, attendees can party it up at the convention dance before curfew.

On the second day, get ready to go to your caucus room, where all of the candidates for district office will be delivering their speeches. If you’re a delegate for your club, you’ll be able to vote for the candidates along with certain amendments at the House of Delegates the next day. If you don’t have voting privileges, don’t worry! All Key Club members are able to ask candidates any questions they please during caucusing. Feel free to talk to the candi-dates during the convention too!

After that, we’ll head into the first few workshop periods. Hosted by various board members and club officers, these sessions often carry valuable information that can help you learn more about club office positions, planning events, using technology in Key Club, and more! Definitely plan on bringing back some important insight to your the members of your club who can’t make it. Also during this time will be the public speaking and essay writing con-tests. You can register for these at the convention!

Once the workshops have finished, you’ll have a good amount of time to explore Baltimore and go to lunch with your friends. After a few hours, hurry back for the next block of work-shop sessions.

Next, you’ll want to visit the service fair, where many club members will be setting up pre-sentation boards filled with unique ideas for service projects that you can take back to your clubs. You’ll also have an opportunity to interact with some of the candidates for district office!

You can conclude the second night of DCON by going to the Awards Banquet Dinner, where tables will cover the main convention floor as attendees eat a delicious meal while watching awards given out to outstanding clubs and members and contest winners announced. Final-ly, the day will close with a second convention dance.

On the third and final day, voting members will be attending the House of Delegates in the morning to cast their votes on candidates for district office and make their decisions to sup-port or reject amendments. The winners will be announced at the farewell session breakfast shortly after, where you’ll watch the current board retire before heading home.

On the behalf of the Capital District Board, we hope to see you at DCON!

You can register here, or watch the DCON 2015 promo trailer here.

Didn’t get to attend ICON 2014 in Anaheim, California? Bummed you missed out? Don’t worry! Next year, ICON 2015 will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana from June 25th-28th. This ICON, you definitely don’t want to miss. Wondering why? This ICON is for Key Club, CKI, and Kiwanis! Key Clubbers, CKIers, and Kiwanians will come together in Indi-anapolis to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of Kiwanis. We also will come together to celebrate the final year of Project ELIMINATE. Come on, 2015 is called Year Celebrate for a reason!

Never attended an International Convention? Don’t know what happens? At ICON 2015, Key Clubbers from all around the world gather together to celebrate our love for service. We attend workshops, dances, and meet many new friends that we will keep for a lifetime. One of the most exciting things that occur at ICON, is that we elect the new International Board for the next year. ICON will absolutely make your love of ser-vice and Key Club skyrocket, it will change your lives-no doubt.

Can’t wait to see you all at ICON 2015!

ICON 2015

Page 15: Winter 2014 Capital Key

My first thought of ICON in the beginning of the year was, “This is probably going to be an event that is not so different from DCON.” However, my whole understanding of ICON and Key Club was drastically changed by this single event. ICON was one of those life changing events. Not only was I able to appreciate and discover the outcome of my unwavering service to key club, I was able to find a place where people had the same mindset and drive to help others. ICON is a place where incredibly talented individuals come together to share one single amazing experience; the joy of helping other people. This year, ICON was held in Anaheim, California near Disneyland. The main events of ICON this year in-cluded electing new key clubbers for the international board, learning about the events created by other clubs in the service fair, learning new things in a multitude of workshops, and main having a good time meeting other key clubbers around the world. My name is Rui Fu and I am all the way from Towson High School in Division 6B. I was really excited but also nervous in the beginning as I eagerly hopped off the plane and seized my first breaths of the cool California breeze. The Capital District Crabs were traveling as a group and we had finally ar-rived in front of the humongous hotel where the convention was going to be held. Since we arrived early, we had time to relax and grab some pizza to eat outside. The weather was really nice and it was a really relaxing moment before the rest of the key clubbers arrived. After we had gotten our hotel keys, our group decided to go to the beach. We had an amazing time at the beach playing Frisbee, eating smores, and singing to the last light of day. After the beach, we came back to our hotel and interacted with the other key clubbers. I was really nervous talking too many of them, but they were really nice and made me feel comfortable and included. International Convention is where Key Clubbers all over the world come together and celebrate a year of service. With events such as the Meet & Greet, workshops, House of Delegates, caucusing, and the sessions, it is a wonderful time to meet new Key Clubbers and friends that will last for a lifetime. It is also where you elect the International Board. My name is Arshad Fakhar, and I go to Dulaney High School. For me, International Convention was one of the highlights of my Key Club career so far be-cause of the friendships I’ve made and skills I’ve learned and can take with me to the outside world. The best part about convention is seeing how close you become as a District. Every night, Capital Key Club-bers met at a hotel room to reflect on the day but a convention passed, we became closer and closer like a second family. If there is one event you do not want to miss, it’s definitely ICON 2015. What makes this one so special is that it is combined with the Circle K’s ICON & Kiwanis’s ICON since Kiwanis International turns 100 in 2015. Do not miss the opportunity to meet 12,000 servant leaders from all over the world in Indianapolis. More information has yet to come but we strongly encourage all of you to attend. We hope to see you there!Rui Fu, Towson High Key Club PresidentArshad Fakhar, Division 6B Lieutenant Governor

The ELIMINATE Project

There are few events more joyful than the day a new born baby is welcomed to the world. But in 40 countries a dreaded disease quickly turns that joy into tragedy. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes – that’s 60,00 babies every year who will never grow up, make their mothers laugh play with friends or dream about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating – tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. Up to 30,000 mothers die of MNT every year too.

WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE?

BABIES AND MOTHERS ARE DYING, BUT THERE IS A SOLUTION. The good news is that this deadly disease can easily be prevented. Three doses of a 60 – cent immunization protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future babies. How can we allow MNT to take its vicious toll when we have the power to prevent?

Prepare. Grow your club. Get your friends to join the cause. Educate. Educate yourself about MNT, and share what you learn with your club, your community, your family, and your school. Advocate. Let the world know that the poorest, most vulnerable babies and mothers need our

help. Invest. Be among the first to invest in this global project. ELIMINATE. MNT will be eliminated!

CHANGING THE WORLD FOREVER ........ AGAIN!

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, we are eliminating MNT from the face of the earth. Imagine. We are eliminating a disease that kills innocent newborns and destroys families. And in doing so, we are reaching the poorest, most neglected babies and mothers with additional lifesaving healthcare. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

DO YOUR PART.

Page 17: Winter 2014 Capital Key

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

Before ELIMINATE reached Madagascar, an average 41 out of every 1000 infants died from Neonatal Tetanus. Since then, Madagascar has undergone the process of Eliminating MNT. More and more newborns and mothers lives are being saved from MNT. Since 1999, UNICEF and its partners have eliminated this disease from 35 countries. However, MNT still remains a threat in 24 countries. Caryl M. Stern, Presi-dent and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, stated, “Your passion and drive to deliver urgently needed funds to the countries still at-risk of this terrible disease will ensure that no mother has to worry about losing her baby to tetanus.” This year is the final push of the ELIMINATE project to eliminate MNT from the face of Earth. For this to be possible, Kiwanis and the branches of the K-Family need to raise about $110 million. Let’s make this our best year yet. It’s time to ELIMINATE this terrible disease!

KOTIO Governor’s

Project -Key Club Outreach to Include Others-

Hey there Key Clubbers of the mighty Capital District! My name is Anastasia Slepukhova and I am truly honored to be able to serve as your District Governor for the 2014-2015 service year! Every year, the District Governor chooses a special cause and designs a project to implement within his or her term. I see this as an amazing opportunity for Key Clubbers to have another reason to get involved in their communities and truly make an impact with hands on service! I present to you "KOTIO" which stands for Key Club Outreach to Include Others. Did you know that disabilities are one of the nation’s most important public health issues? More than 20% of Americans are living with disabilities, 70% of which rely on family and friends for assistance with daily activities. With Inclusiveness being one of the Key Club International’s core values, it is important that we extend our service and kindness to everyone in our communities. When choosing the Governor’s Project I was very mindful to pick a cause that we can truly help and also be easily accessible by all clubs. So go ahead and take the challenge! Work with your club leaders (Include your Lieutenant Governors and local Kiwanis too!) to plan a service project; the possibilities are endless! As an added bonus, you will also receive special recognition at the Annual District Leadership Convention if you successfully participate in an event that benefits individuals living with disabilities. Thank you for all that you do, and once again- I am very excited to be able to work with all of you this year.
