Lunch at the HistoricJonathan Club

Club members Tom Merrill and Anne Vogel will be hosting luncheon on Saturday, August 4th at the historic Jonathan Club and hope you will join the limited group of 40 RROC members and guests. We will be privileged to enjoy some of the highlights of the downtown Jonathan Club and view the ornately carved, painted ceilings done in Italian Renaissance style by craftsman. This building was planned and constructed in the early 20’s by the club members. The Jonathan Club was founded in 1895, and has survived a number of economic booms and busts.

We will be able to see one of the finest collections of “plein air” art created in California. The art movement, inspired by the French impressionist, Claude Monet, was carried to California in a different form by Monet’s neighbor. Mostly painted outdoors (hence the French term “plein air”), this art has been accumulated for the past seventy years through donations to the Jonathan Art Foundation.

We will meet in the Jonathan Club Lobby at 10:45 a.m. and plan to go up to our meeting room where we will break into two groups of maximum 20 people each. One group will tour the art and magnificent interior architecture while the other group will hear the club history and inside stories from club members. The groups then switch, so that everyone has both experiences. Lunch will follow: Lunch Choices are (#1) Sautéed Atlantic Salmon or (#2) Chief Ancient Grains Salad Berry Crumble with Crème Fraiche is included along with coffee, iced or hot tea. Please be aware that the Jonathan Club has a strict dress code. The appropriate dress is business casual. No jeans, shorts or sandals are allowed. Those interested in a further downtown view of history may leave their cars in the Jonathan Club garage and taxi to Union Station. After a look around Union Station, cross the street to the area popularly called “Olvera Street”. The founding area of old Los Angeles is “Olvera Street”, with the plaza, bandstand, shopping and the earliest church in Los Angeles. Date: August 4, 2018

The Cover StoryBy Maged “Matt” Guirguis

My 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II Drop head (LSWC596) was previously owned by Hollywood actor/comedian Ruth Buzzi. It was maintained by Vantage Motor Works in Florida. I purchased it October 16, 2017 and it now has a home in Pacific Palisades. It was exhibited at the Peterson car Museum. I enjoy driving it every day and have had it exhibited at several fund raisers and community events.

I also have another Cloud that was part of the 4th of July Pacific Palisades Parade and was the pace car for the Will Rogers 10k race, driven by race car driver Townsend Bell.

RRide Share to Tahoe? RRide on!By Steve Power-Fardy

Are you driving your car to the RROC National Meet in Tahoe? Or are you a RROC-SoCal member who would like to go to Tahoe but don’t have a ride? Or are you holding out on going because you didn’t want to make the long drive by yourself?

We’ve got you all covered!

Why not share the ride with a fellow RROC-SoCal member? This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to attend the RROC National Meet in California. The National Meet is from August 11th – 18th, 2018. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the ride with a fellow member, attend some great events and meet some great people, take in the Tahoe sights and some pretty cool cars too!

If you are a rider or driver you can still register for the National Meet until the end of July, but don’t wait too long because some events might sell out. Or you can request a registration form from [email protected] and we will send you a pdf by email to print out, fill in and send to RROC National.

Don’t let this chance to ride with a fellow member slip by. You never know, this could be the start of a beautiful, lifelong friendship. Drop us a note [email protected] and let us know:1 )If you are a driver willing to share the ride, which day you are heading up and which day you are heading back.

2) Or are you a rider? Which days are you available to head up and head back?

Let’s get this road trip RRolling!

Meet activities start with the Tahoe Wooden Boat Concours, followed by

motoring tours in the spectacular scenery of the California Sierra, and drives to

historic gold mining towns, private collections & lakeside vistas.

Join us for the tech meets, society dinners, trips to historic Tahoe locations, sailing and

whitewater rafting, moonlight paddlewheeler ride, and dawn patrols by the lake at sunrise.

The Wende Cold War Museum

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, westerners were finally able to see how life was for eastern Europeans under the Stalinist rule.

Our hosts, John and Caryl Levy, invite you to join them at the just-opened Wende Museum on September 22nd. This museum is located in Culver City and was established to preserve Cold War art, culture and history that originated in the Soviet bloc countries. From the Wende Museum website: “During the early 1990s, these materials that document an entire cultural history of what life was like in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, were rapidly disappearing. Historical landmarks were being torn down, statues vandalized, consumer products discarded, film and photographs left to deteriorate and archives actively destroyed.

The Wende Museum collection originated with items acquired by museum founder Justinian Jampol in the mid-1990s and quickly expanded in 2000 with a significant donation by activist Alwin Nachtweh and his partner Ulrike Wolf. The Museum was incorporated in the State of California in 2002 as 501(c)3.”

We will enjoy a private tour that is led by museum founder Justinian Jampol, who has a unique perspective on the collection.

We will conclude our day with a sumptuous brunch at the California Yacht Club. Be sure to save the date and join us at for this fascinating day.

Reunited!Dori Olsen

In March I received an email from a gentleman, Matt Pickles from the U.K. who asked me to put him in touch with Howard and Betty Green. Not knowing who this person was, I immediately went to Google to see if I could find information on him. It turns out that he is associated with a classic car dealership in the U.K. and he found a handbook for the Greens’ Silver Cloud that he wanted to reunite with their car. He said the handbook was not in great condition so he wouldn’t charge them for it but he wanted it reunited with the car.

Howard sent him an email and, after the passage of a few months, the handbook is now back with the car! Howard writes “though the Handbook is not in the best condition, it appears complete and is certainly legible throughout. My Chassis Number (LSCC77) is hand written in the book on page 15 and in the back are separate instructions for the automobile radio, a list of 1958 worldwide Rolls Royce service facilities (Gough Industries and Peter Sartori in the L. A. area), a one page sheet showing all of the dash knobs, gauges, foot pedals and levers in the interior, and a 1965 New York State registration form showing the name and address of the owner in 1965. It is a welcome addition to the car, and I sent Mr. Pickles a note of profuse thanks for finding it and taking the time to see that it got in the hands of the present owner of the car.”

How great is the fraternity of Rolls-Royce owners and aficionados!

The Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum

By Joan Hugron

It may have been a cloudy, dreary day, but it certainly did not dampen the spirits of everyone that attended the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum. The RROC So-Cal group was so delighted to have some of the San Diego region group join us. We had a chance to get caught up on what is going on in the regions over coffee and pastries.

From the moment you walked into the museum, there was fascination everywhere. There was something for everyone regardless of their interest or passion. There were miniature cars, planes, boats, trains, clocks, miniature doll houses, merry-go-rounds and the list goes on and on. It was so amazing to realize every part was working and functioning. Great skill and detail went into each display.

We were privileged to be given admission to the workshop for demonstrations of working engines and 3D printers, among other demonstrations. There was a 1/16 inch scale of an all aluminum Corsair with no outer skin on the plane that showed details of how a plane is made.

Being such car enthusiasts, we were all mesmerized to see a 1/6 scale model of a 1932 Duesenberg SJ that took 23,000 hours to build with over 6,000 custom parts. Everything on the cars works except for the gauges.

One of our San Diego region members, Carl Herrman, is a docent at the museum, which was a great treat, as he gave us lots of additional information about all the displays and where they come from. Carl was also a wealth of information concerning the Green Dragon Tavern and the history behind it.

After the museum, we gathered at the Green Dragon Tavern and Museum. The building is an exact duplicate of the original Green Dragon Tavern in Boston, which was built in 1654 and is known as the headquarters of the Revolution.

If you missed this event, we highly encourage everyone to visit the Miniature Engineering Museum and have lunch at the Green Dragon Tavern and Museum the next time you are near San Diego.

Who needs a Lift?By Steve Power-Fardy

I like to perform my car’s minor repairs myself. Which means, my repair skills can only do minor damage because I don’t have a lift.

Recently, I received an unsolicited email for the do-it-yourselfer that offered the rental of a professional garage bay with a lift for only $100 an hour. And if I bought a multi-hour package I could enjoy an even more amazing low price of only $80 an hour. I talked to Ronny Shaver at Ronny’s Garage about this game-changing-repair-transforming idea. Ronny was less than enthusiastic to endorse the idea knowing that me, with my tools at-the-ready, in any service bay is an emergency room visit just waiting to happen.

Undeterred, I excitedly waited for the big day to finally arrive so that I could go and check out this legendary, mystic Xanadu of auto repair. When I went to pull out my car, my amateurish little tire ramps that I had used to perform my little repairs was blocking my way. I quickly tossed them aside, because a new day had dawned. And then it hit me.

Eureka! Why not make my own lift?!

I carefully took the measurements of the height of my little ramps, the width of my tires and the wheelbase of my car. Then I headed to my local Home Depot with my trusty tape measure in hand. After wearing out the bottom of my shoes wandering up and down the aisles, I finally found some nice sturdy wooden beams that could support the weight of my car. Next I was off to the concrete cinder block aisle to see if there was a block that could boost up the height of the beams to be level with the height of my ramps.

The stars aligned for me again. A perfect-sized block was readily available.

Within minutes, I was struggling to load two massive twelve-foot wooden beams and six concrete blocks into my compact little Audi. As a courtesy to the other envious do-it-yourself motorists who didn’t come up with a lift idea of their own, I attached a little red warning flag to warn them to keep a safe distance – automotive genius was at work.

Once home, I used some scrap wood as makeshift guardrails along the edge of the length of both beams and made a tire stop at the front of both beams. To help line up the beams to the 59-inch width of the tires on the car, I drilled holes at each end of the beams and put in dowels that could hold a removable 59-inch spacer bar. The finishing touch was putting some eye screws on each side and attaching a rope handle for easy lifting.

And there you have it - a lift fit for a Rolls-Royce for about the cost of one hour on a rental bay lift. Now I can raise up my car just enough to merrily scoot around underneath on my creeper at speeds sufficient to give myself a Grade 3 level concussion.

But best of all, my new lift brings my family closer together. I need one family member to keep the dog out of the way and another to help guide my car up and down the ramps.

That’s why, at the next holiday, I will complete my lift project by giving my wife a pair of those lighted sticks that the guys at the airport use so that she can have just as much fun with my new lift as me.

RROC National Judges’ Training School was a

Complete SelloutBy Steve Power-Fardy

On May 5th, RROC So-Cal Technical Chairman Ronny Shaver was the host for this year’s National Judging Seminar. Ronny’s Garage was the host facility.

RROC Chief Judge Bob Fahning and Judging Committee Member Simon Curson came out to California to help Ronny Shaver put a crew of twenty-five enthusiastic RROC So-Cal members through their paces in a comprehensive day-long hands-on seminar. Many of those on hand took the club-sponsored seminar to qualify to serve as a judge at the upcoming RROC National Meet in Tahoe on August 11th through the 19th.

Those in attendance were divided into three groups and rotated thorough inspections of a pre-war Phantom II, a Silver Cloud and a Corniche. All the 400-point judging sheets that were compiled by the attendees were tallied, reviewed and deductions discussed. Everyone learned more about these cars, fed their passion and graduated with a certificate of successful completion to frame and put upon their man cave wall!

Now it’s off to Tahoe and the granddaddy judging event of them all!
