So, why not join the MCC Ambas-sadors for a very exciting and family friendly event. This event is open to all Golf and Social members but is limited. Be sure to invite and register early. THE ENTIRE CLUB APPRECIATES YOUR SUPPORT IN THIS MEMBERSHIP BY INVITATION INITIATIVE.

The Green Committee is repeating the following re-quests of all members to enhance the appearance of the golf course with a few simple guidelines. Thanks to the members who are on board with the concept that members do have a responsibility to assist with the beauty and care of the golf course:
1. Pick up and remove your tee on the tee box
2. Fix your divot on the tee box, fairway and rough
3. Fix at least one ball mark on every green
4. Make sure all rakes are place fully inside the bunkers
5. Pick up your liter, cigarette and cigar butts and place in trash
Unfortunately, an example of poor judgment was re-viewed by members on Friday evening June 19th when an unknown member decided to use the 18th fairway as their own practice area by chipping to the green and leaving a large hole about 80 yards out in the fair-way from the green without any attempt to repair the damage. Please keep in mind, it we practice a few simple playing rules such as raking your trap, fixing ball marks on the green, picking up your tee after play and not littering the course, fellow members can enjoy the same well maintained course conditions through-out the course. Tossing your broken tees as well as cigarette and cigar butts in the mulch and plant areas next to the tee boxes does nothing to improve the ap-pearance of the tee box areas. The Pro Shop has pro-vided ash trays for the carts, see the Starter. Al-so, driving through the native grass areas in a cart is very poor judgment. We ask that members should refrain from driving their carts into any and all native grass areas.
In closing, the members of the Green Committee are aware of the conversations about the loss of trees and the speed of the greens. These topics are being dis-cussed. Steve and his staff are making every effort to keep the course in playing condition throughout the changes of weather and recent storms. The 14th green has already shown improvement and Steve appreciat-ed the memberships quick notification of a problem with the green which was a result of a storm damag-ing the watering system. The overall course condition
is excellent. The future of re-planting trees is an issue to be planned with the owners and manage-ment staff. The membership is encouraged to continue making suggestions to improve the course and the course Superintendent, Steve Newsome, is a strong supporter of the ideas al-ready suggested by the Green Committee.
Thank You.

Q&A on ESC Last month we promised more on Equitable Stroke Control. Well here’s an oldie but goody (like most of us). This is what we said about ESC last September. Why Equitable Stroke Control? A USGA Handicap Index is a measure of a players “potential abil-ity” (USGA Handicap Manual section 1.1). That’s one reason only your lowest 10 scores are used to cal-culate your handicap. Well, those holes you blow up on don’t represent your potential ability either. Those scores need to be adjusted to a score that is more reflective of your potential ability. What is an appropriate score? That depends on your handicap for the course you are playing. The system has been adjusted from time to time, but the table at right shows the current ESC limits. But, be careful with that reference to “Course Handicap”. Your course handicap will be more or less than your home handi-cap depending on the difficulty of the course. If you are near the di-viding line your ESC score may be different for the course you are playing. So do I pick up when I reach the maximum? Correct answer: No. Equitable Stroke Control is an adjust-ment to your score for handicap posting purposes. If you have one of those nasty blow up holes, you should record the actual number on your score card. You only adjust to Equitable Stroke Control to post the score for handicap purposes. Modified answer: It depends. If you’re playing a stroke play event, or matching cards with your buddies, yes, record all of your strokes. If you’re playing a match, or just play-ing with your weekend group, once the hole is won or lost please pick up and record your most likely score or maximum score. The players behind you will appreciate you speeding up a little.
What score do I record if I do pick up on a hole? On your score card you will record the most likely score. If you’re lying 6 on the green with a likely 2 putt you would write an 8 on your score card as your most likely score. But if your course handicap is less than 20 you would have to adjust that 8 to either a 7 or double bogey when you post for hand-icap purposes. Is there a limit on the number holes I can adjust per round? No. You can apply the Equitable Stroke Control adjustment to every hole if you need to. Where can I get more information? The USGA web site has a section on handicaps. It includes a number of educational resources including the full text of the USGA Handicap Manual. You can also ask the professional staff, or any member of the Handicap Committee listed below.
One more remind-er. We have heard reports of a prob-lem with the MSGA smart phone app. Appar-ently it isn’t always sure what day it is. We tested the lat-est version of the
app and it seems to work fine, so please make sure you have updated to this years version. Otherwise, always make sure you are posting with the correct date of play. Fair handicaps make the game enjoyable for every-one. KEEP COOL EVERYONE! It was great to welcome 2 new members to the LILIES in June – Rachelle Galant and Becky Escario. They are learning Mah Jongg and joined in the Book Group dis-cussing of Orphan Train. Kelly Pitchford also is learn-ing Mah Jongg. We would love to see some of our “missing” Mah Jongg players return to the tables soon.
The LILIES are now having game night every Thursday – and the game will be decided by those that are coming. We can play Mah Jongg if we have enough players, or we can play “Chicken Foot” dominoes for those wanting something less challenging, Bunco is still an option. LILIES love games so if you want to play, we are more than happy to teach you how.
July events July 2nd, 9th,16th, 23rd, 30th -6:30PM Game Night - we may play Mah Jongg, Dominoes, Bunco whatever the majority wants – 1, 2, or even 3 games depending on participation July 23rd - Book Club 7PM The Recipe Box by Sandra Lee. The LILIES also organize bridge so if you would like to play or learn to play, be sure to let us know. Here is no set day for bridge as yet, but we are working on a schedule. Please contact Chèli Derry - [email protected] or (301) 774-1144 if you’d like to help plan activities and have any suggestions, questions, or you might be planning to attend an event.

It seems that I always start out by talking about the weather we have been having and this
will be no different. Our weather patterns were relatively normal during April and May but June gave us the heat, humidity and the rain. Typically in our area in June we receive about 3.5 inches of precipitation, this year we have received just about 10 inches of rain. Combine this with the heat and humidity and that spells out high disease pressure, lots of bunker wash outs and repair and lots of mowing and when there is lightning usually some repairs to the irriga-tion system. Usually I am not too happy when July rolls around because of the weather but hopefully it will be like last year and make a turn for the better. It seemed we were getting into rhythm with items getting done of the course like bunker edg-ing and weeding then we got our last big storm in June on Saturday June 27th and we received 3 inches of rain. I usually do not see our bunkers get washed out that bad but they did. It took just about 70 man hours to fix the bunkers and about 15 tons of bunker sand. When we have these big rain events we have to make sure we fix the bunkers correctly. First we scrape out the low areas where silt and organic matter (grass clippings) accumulate. Next we shovel sand back up where the washouts occurred and add sand were necessary (since we did remove some from scraping the low points). Finally we bring in the bunker machine and spin the bun-ker to try to fluff up as much sand as possible and then hand rake the entire bunker to really smooth it back out. Usually I am not too happy when July rolls around because of the weather but hopefully it will be like last year and make a turn for the better. As a reminder the Green Committee meets the first Thursday of every month so if you ever have any questions please feel free to contact them so it can be discussed. Also please visit my blog www.montgomerycc.blogspot.com to see pictures of course projects and any updates with what we are doing at the club. In closing please remember to fix your ball marks and one other, replace your divots, rake the bunkers after you have entered them and place the rake in the bunker parallel with how the hole is being played. Once again I would like to Thank You for Belonging to Montgomery Country Club. If you have a question you would like answered please feel free to email me at [email protected].
