The progression of cloud services is the result of several factors. One of the most important factors is the realization of an increasing number of participants. E-mail participation naturally progressed from the principle form of internet communication to an elaborate use of the network for collaboration, gaming, and mass storage.

As users became more sophisticated in their understanding of what the internet could provide, service providers became more proficient in their offerings. As an internet community, we observed the movement from e-Mail, to web browser text and image content, to interactive text messaging such as Windows Live TM Messenger, search engine queries when the content became verbose (i.e.: Bing TM), then onto Xbox Live TM, Live Meeting TM and Microsoft Online Services TM.Copyright 2010 Ògún International Media, L.L.C. It is important to point out that at times elements of the “Live” fabric can both interact with, intertwine with, or mesh with elements of the “Online” fabric. This set of circumstances should not be confusing, rather they should highlight the difference in latency between user interaction with various forms of internet content.

For example, the latency inherent in an e-Mail message is clearly realized by the time it takes for a user to draft, send and then receive a reply from the intended recipient(s). Where as an instant message is less latent. And, an online service which incorporates presence awareness less so. In the later of the examples, presence awareness technology decreases latency by giving the users a targetable audience of online users in which to interact.

In crafting the “Online” environment, presence awareness is essential to the development of services. Key in this understanding is the factor of the less latent more interactive and therefore greatly collaborative environment.

For example, when Microsoft Office Outlook 2010 is supported by Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) presence awareness is provided within a rich e-Mail environment. If a user has available to them a full Microsoft Office suite, the user is afforded the following; instant presence awareness, and the capability to immediately collaborate with an online target audience to share not only conversation but also MS Word documents, MS PowerPoint presentations, and MS Excel spreadsheets utilizing the same network connection.

However, MSO Outlook is not the only software technology that is coming of age in our 21st Century internet. Microsoft corporation (in preparation for addressing market share threat vis-à-vis Google Apps) has redesigned its SkyDrive TM technology to afford users an in equivocal experience. Supported with other software tech, the software and services “gladiatorial games” are gearing-up.
