Term 2 Wrap Up Staff have undertaken a whole site focus around writing moderation
assessing 447 individual pieces of writing against an online ruler.
We have taken a peek into each other’s classes with a ‘Big Ideas in
Number’ IPad sent around for pictures to be taken.
6 teachers have undertaken training and development in Daily 5 (a
pedagogical practice for teaching literacy).
64 students have spoken to Leaders about WHAT (they are learning),
WHY (they are learning it) and HOW (they know they are successful).
School rules have been discussed and refined through staff meetings,
class discussions and Student Council. We plan on a more consistent
approach across the site in term 3, after taking on significant feedback
from all stakeholders.
Parent Connection ran our first fundraising food event, selling 319 Hot
dog packages (!!!) and raising nearly $700 for our school.
Infrastructure development to upgrade play spaces as nature and ‘spare
parts play’ is on the agenda, with funds being raised to support the
development of these areas
Stage one of a $100,000 ICT infrastructure upgrade began with further
upgrades to be considered in the near future.
Signage for our school will be sourced shortly to assist people to find
their way to our office!
Orchid club spoke on community radio and will be sending an orchid in to
the Royal Adelaide Show.
18 students from years 3 – 7 are busily working on science projects
during a lunch time club to participate in the Oliphant Science Awards.
15 students from year 2 – 7 are participating in our Ukulele club at lunch
times (and they are sounding great!!)
20 students from years 3 – 7 are refining their skipping and stunt skills as
part of our Wildfire and Open skipping groups.
20 students year 3 – 7 wowed us with their group performance skills as
part of the Instrumental Music Program.
Loads of SAPSASA sport events were undertaken over the term.
And our week 9 assembly was a great celebration with an
acknowledgment of country and the Australian Anthem!
Have a safe and Happy Holiday with your families, see you next term!

MasterChef has nearly finished, one
more challenge this week! We had some great cake
decorating last week but this time it is the puff pastry
invention test. The students will be given a sheet of
puff pastry, they get to choose 4 items from the pantry
on display and then they put their creativity into action!
With children we often talk about
having good personal hygiene.
The World Health Organisation’s definition of hygiene is
‘Hygiene refers to conditions and practices that help to
maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases’.
We refer to oral hygiene, hand hygiene, hygiene when
working with food etc. Have you ever considered good
Sleep Hygiene though? Getting enough sleep helps
maintain our health and our ability to work and to
concentrate at school.
Here’s a rough guide on recommended hours needed
from the Sleep Health Foundation.
Newborns 14-17 hrs.
Toddlers 11-14 hrs.
Preschool 10-13 hrs.
School age 9 -11 hrs.
Teenagers 8-10 hrs.
Adults 7-9 hrs.
So are you getting enough z z z z zs? If you or your
children aren’t getting enough sleep or find it hard to
sleep, look up some Sleep Hygiene Fact Sheets.
There are a number of tips that you might find helpful
for your health.
Governing Council Report
from week 8 meeting
Effective Practices – Classroom Climate surveys
will be undertaken by students about teaching
staff, feedback will be reviewed and
interventions planned as a term 3 focus.
Learning Committee has been working through
a process to look at Site Improvement Planning.
They also reviewed the Naplan results and
discussed the trends and the implications of
these on the SIP Planning.
Grounds Committee is exploring ideas
around the nature play trail and what it is –
pedagogical implications etc.
Grounds Committee would like any ideas
for ways to re-sign the school and to ensure
people can find their way to the office!
8 Korean exchange students will be visiting in
Term 3 – placements are still needed
A new Teacher has been appointed for 2018,
Ineke Rumball will be working in the Junior
Primary. A second teaching position will be
advertised along with a special education

OSHC re-development – this still could
happen… – School closure day in term 3 will be

have our component in place)
Term 3 Staffing It is with great pleasure to announce the new Deputy
Principal joining the team at Willunga Primary School.
We welcome Karen Matthews who will commence Term
3 2017 until 2024.
Please join us in welcoming her to our school
community next term.
SAPSASA News Girls Hockey
Last week we played hockey at the Grange recreation
oval. There were lots of teams there like Adelaide East,
Gawler, Riverland, plus more. Our team was
Onkaparinga South. On the very last day we got our first
goal and it was in our very last game. Overall I think it
was a really good week.
Mia M
It was icy cold and we had to wake up at 6-7am in the
morning to get there. Being on the field was amazing,
the running, yelling and cheering the other team
members on. We didn’t win many games, but it felt like
we won the whole thing when we got our first goal.
There were lots of positions such as wing, goalie, half-
back, full-back and more. My favourites are wing and full
back. We had a great time.
Jodi B
The Girls Hockey Team showed great courage and
persistence, fighting out every game in a very tough
Division 1. It was a fitting reward to have a win in the last
match against Upper South East. Well done to all of our
squad and their Coach Kat Best.
SAPSASA News Boys Hockey
Last week 6 boys from Willunga Primary School went
to Grange Hockey Club to compete in the SAPSASA
hockey carnival. The boys that were part of the team
were Matthew G, Seb H, Jasper R, Ryan K, Alexander
B and Luka W.
Luka was goalie, Matthew was the captain and the
rest were playing in different positions on the field.
The weather was ok with showers every now and
then. We won 3, drew 3 and lost 4. We ended up
coming 7th which is better than the other years. We
had a good team and played well but some of the
other teams play state hockey. Big thanks to Deidre
and Joel for coaching us and helping us along the
way.
Jasper, Matthew and Seb.
The Boys Hockey Team went from strength to
strength in Division 2. It was pleasing to see the
development of players over the Carnival, with a
best-ever finish of 7th of 11 teams.
End of Term Friday 7th
Early Dismissal 2:05pm
OHSC News
School Holidays are next week, be quick to return your booking form to secure your days. We are looking for donations of recycled materials, bottle tops/caps/lids, yoghurt caps/lids, small cardboard boxes and plastic containers would be greatly appreciated. We have had a very busy Term 2 at OSHC, we have created a city out of recycled materials and now using it as a prop for our cars and trains. We have looked at what’s healthy and unhealthy in our food choices, having discussions, looking through magazines and cutting food items out to create a collage and place mats. Recently a focus has been on horses with discussions amongst a group. During a period over a week, I had provided the children with some horse related items of mine including a horse saddle, bridle and books. The children had the opportunity to sit on the saddle to see what it was like and explore the equipment. Some children who attend OSHC have horses of their own and have participated in explaining to others what they know about horses and the riding equipment. Currently we are starting our “Belonging Tree”. We have a large canvas with a tree trunk on it. Everyone will get their own small hand cutout to decorate and write their name. These will be placed on the tree and its branches as leaves. So far we have some very colourful leaves. This will be an ongoing activity, continuing during the school holidays as well as next term, making sure everyone gets their hand on the tree. Belinda Filkin OSHC Director

Cultural Activities at
Willunga Primary
In week 6 on Friday the 9th of June, we had the
pleasure of having Clem Newchurch come to the
school and visit our ATSI students. Clem is an
Aboriginal man who is very involved with his culture
and from a young age he has been taught many
things. He loves to share his cultural experiences with
everyone and having him come in to the school gave
the ATSI kids an opportunity to learn something new
about their culture.
He presented to us a PowerPoint presentation, where
he first shared with us some stories about his family
and the connection he has with the land. We learnt
about the many things that he has accomplished over
the years within the indigenous community, from
working in schools with indigenous kids, to working
with the council to incorporate cultural related events
and activities for the youth.
He spoke to us about Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri culture
as well, which are the two Aboriginal nations of the
Adelaide region. We learnt that some of his family
links back to these two nations as well as another
indigenous group from Western Australia. He shared
with us some of the different cultural aspects
between these three groups and being in different
parts of Australia, the different ways they each would
have lived and survived.
We all quickly found that Clem really loves to go
fishing. As it is a major hobby of his and is something
that he enjoys very much, he also shared with us the
traditional methods that indigenous people would use
when hunting for fish.
He brought in his very own artefacts that he has
made, which he also uses when fishing. This includes
spears, spear throwers and even fishing rope that is
made from specific plants. Even though he still uses
modern fishing technologies he keeps the culture
alive by making his own traditional fishing tools and
putting them to use.
He wrapped up the presentation with a little activity
by teaching the kids step by step, how to draw various
types of fish.
Overall it was a very positive experience for the kids and we are looking forward to getting more cultural activities happening for our ATSI students.
Looking for things for the kids to do in the Holidays??
Putting it all together:
Some of our latest “Urbanscape Silhouette”
art, using geometric maths understanding
while learning about liveability factors in
Geography.
