In accordance with this mission, the William F. Slagle Dental Meeting is committed to offering extensive continuing education courses, commercial exhibits, and additional educational programs advancing the growth and development of the dental profession.

On behalf of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry Alumni Association I want to invite you to join us for the 2018 William F. Slagle Dental Meeting.

Your Alumni Association Board and the College of Dentistry staff have planned an outstanding meeting. Bring your staff and learn from outstanding, nationally recognized speakers.

In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in hands on courses, team building and re-certify in all the required annual and bi-annual courses needed for licensure.

It is the goal of the Slagle Dental Meeting to provide you the very best and most cost effective continuing education. In addition, the proceeds from the meeting are given back to the College of Dentistry to further support the faculty and students. The meeting has contributed over two million dollars back to our school!

If this is a reunion year, contact you classmates and encourage them to join you. The Alumni Association plans dinners for you, so all you and your classmates need to do is show up!

Be sure and plan to attend our welcome party at the new Graceland facility, surrounded by Elvis’s cars, and his legendary music.

The remodel of the school is now complete. It is truly state of the art! Plan to go by. Say Hello to your favorite faculty member and thank him or her for all they taught you. You’ll be very proud of the quality education that our students continue to receive.

ONLINE REGISTRATIONOnline registration will be open until, February 11, 2018. We encourage you to register early and take advantage of the discounted fee for registration by February 2, 2018. Advance registration for all programs is strongly encouraged and appreciated. Check-in for the William F. Slagle Dental Meeting begins Thursday from 3:00–6:00 pm at the Hilton Hotel and will continue all day Friday and Saturday until 12:00 p.m. All information, name tags, and meal tickets will be held for pick-up at the registration desk. Your registration fee covers your choice of sessions unless otherwise noted, Friday and Saturday lunch, refreshment breaks, continuing education credit, and admission to the Welcome Party and exhibit booths. CANCELLATION POLICYYou can cancel your registration online on the registration site before February 11, 2018. A $30 processing fee is assessed to ALL refunds and will be deducted from the registration fee paid. In addition to canceling your registration online, please send an email to the UTHSC Continuing Dental Education Office at [email protected] that you have canceled your registration.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITThe formal continuing education programs of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Dentistry are accepted by AGD for Fellowship/Mastership credit. The current term of acceptance extends from 11/01/2015 through 12/31/2019. Provider ID #146050 The UTHSC College of Dentistry is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association toassist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. The current term of approval extends from November 2015 to December 2019.

Courses presented are acceptable by those states that recognize the ADA (CERP) approved and AGD accepted providers. Upon completion of the course and entering your attendance code, each participant will receive a certificate of completion, which includes the name, date of the course, and the credit earned.

K. Mark Anderson, DDS

Dr. Anderson is a 1989 graduate of the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry. After eleven years in private dental practice, he began his residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology at The Ohio State University. Upon completion in 2003, he returned to the University of Tennessee, where he is currently an Associate Professor and Division Director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He also serves as Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Diagnostic Services.

Sandy Baird, MBA

With an MBA and more than 30 years of dental management experience, Sandy Baird founded Baird Dental Business Concepts in 2005. Since then, Sandy has trained, coached, advised, and partnered with a wide diversity of dentists and their teams. With her combination of education, experience, and dentist/husband of 40 years, she offers dentists a wide selection of practice management services and solutions. Whether it is team-building, organization, management, or training; her goal is to reduce stress, risks, and inefficiencies in the practice while increasing rewards to the dentists, team, and patients. She speaks on a number of dental management topics and is published in many prominent dental periodicals.

Charles Blair, DDS

Dr. Charles Blair is dentistry’s leading authority on insurance coding strategies, fee positioning, and strategic planning. He has individually consulted with thousands of practices, helping them identify and implement new strategies for increasing legitimate reimbursement. Dr. Blair’s extensive background and expertise makes him uniquely qualified to share his wealth of knowledge with the dental profession. A widely-read and highly respected author and publisher, he currently offers several publications, Coding with Confidence, Administration with Confidence, Diagnostic Coding for Dental Claim Submission, Medical Dental Cross Coding with Confidence and the Insurance Solutions Newsletter. Also through his expertise, he founded practicebooster.com which optimizes insurance administration and aids in maximizing reimbursement. He holds degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, Mathematics, and Dental Surgery.

Vinay Jain, BDS, MS, MDS

Dr. Vinay Jain is an Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry, Memphis. He completed his education in Dentistry and General Practice Residency in 2003 from Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai, India and moved to United States to pursue higher education. He earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, a residency in Prosthodontics and a DDS at the UTHSC College of Dentistry.

Dr. Jain has received extensive training in the management of complex needs of patients requiring oral rehabilitation utilizing removable, fixed and implant prosthodontics. He also maintains an active dental practice at the university and has affiliations with private practice as a consultant. His research interests include the contribution of neural crest and dental pulp stem cells to craniofacial tissues, CBCT, implant dentistry and biofilm formation on contemporary denture base materials. Dr. Jain has numerous scientific publications and he serves on the editorial board of multiple journals.

Dr. Jain has been involved in dental education and aspires to pursue academia as a career. During his brief stint into academia, he has received numerous honors for his excellence and dedication in clinical teaching. He is a member of American Dental Association and has been awarded a membership in the Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontics.

Gerard Kugel, DMD, MS, PhD

Gerard Kugel, DMD, MS, PhD, Associate Dean for Research, and Professor ofProsthodontics and Operative Dentistry at Tufts University. He is a Fellow in the American and International Colleges of Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Academy of Dental Materials. He has a MS in Anatomy and Cellular Biology, a PhD in Dental Materials, and his Executive Certificate in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Business.Dr. Kugel has published 130 articles, 320 abstracts and given 350 lectures. Dr. Kugel is part of a group practice, Trinity Dental, located in Back Bay, Boston.

John Olmsted, DDS, MS

John S. Olmsted, DDS, MS is a past President of the American Association of Endodontists, and past General Chairperson of the American Dental Association 2004 Orlando, FL Meeting. He has been active in practice, teaching, lecturing, and professional dental organizations for the past 40 years. John received his DDS from the University of Iowa in 1975 and was awarded OKU. He earned his MS from the University of North Carolina in 1977 and is currently an Adjunct Professor in Endodontics at the University of North Carolina and the University of Iowa. He is certified by the American Board of Endodontics and obtained his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) in 1984, Fellowship in the International College of Dentists (FICD) in 1989, Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy in 1993, and Fellowship in the American College of Dentists (FACD) in 1995.

Penny Reed

Penny Reed is a speaker, coach and author of the book, Growing Your Dental Business. Penny works with dentists and their teams to grow their practice, become more profitable, and have less stress. As a result, her clients are more focused, have more income, and happier teams.

Beth Mobilian, RDH, BA, MEd

Beth Mobilian, RDH, BA, MEd received her dental hygiene education at Indiana University School of Dentistry. With 30 years of clinical private practice experience, she began as an adjunct instructor at Concorde Career College. Receiving her MEd degree in Education from Christian Brothers University, she was promoted to Dental Hygiene Program Director at Concorde. Since 2014, she has served as Clinical Coordinator and Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. Currently, she is an instructor in clinic theory, clinical practice, and local anesthesia courses. She holds certifications in Laser Dentistry, CPR instruction, and is an active member of ADHA, serving as delegate for the state of Tennessee. Her interests lie in clinical research, faculty calibration, and clinical methodology.

Lynn Russell, RDH, BSDH, MEd, EdD

Lynn is a graduate of the Dental Hygiene class of 1975 and completed her BSDH in 1977. She has over 25 years of private practice experience, and worked both in Community and Preventive Dentistry and the Dental Hygiene Department at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She received her MEd from Christian Brothers University and her EdD in Leadership, with a concentration in Adult Education, from the University of Memphis. Lynn launched the Dental Hygiene program for Concorde Career College, a proprietary school with 16 campuses, and in 2013 became the Director of Teaching and Professional Development for the Concorde group. The program she developed there is now on eight of their campuses. Sharing her expertise, she also wrote a dental hygiene program for a school in East Tennessee. Currently, Lynn is the Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene and the Interim Program Director for the Master’s of Dental Hygiene program at UTHSC. She is an editor for Gavin Publishing’s Journal of Dental Sciences and is active in the Memphis Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Tennessee Dental Hygienists’ Association having served as Trustee for District 9. Currently, Lynn is the President-Elect and will serve as the President of the TNDHA in 2017- 2018.

David R. Sain, DDS, MS

After attaining a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Tennessee Dental School, Dr. Sain completed his formal dental education in 1982 with a Master’s Degree in Orthodontics. Over the past 35 years, he has enjoyed a successful practice of orthodontics in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Dr. Sain has taught at Vanderbilt Medical School’s Dental Division as an Assistant Professor of Orthodontics, as well as had articles published in leading orthodontic journals. For the last 14 years, serving as Chairman of the Tennessee Dental Association’s Dental Professionals Wellness Committee, Dr. Sain has studied and gained extensive knowledge concerning substance abuse issues, and has had articles published on subjects such as “Genetics of Chemical Dependency” and “Interoffice Intervention for Chemical Dependency.” Having recently sold his orthodontic practice, his main focus and attention now is serving as the Director of the Wellness Committee Program.

Thomas Viola, RPh, CCP

Thomas Viola is a board certified pharmacist who also serves the profession of dentistry as a clinical educator, professional speaker, and published author in the areas of oral pharmacology and local anesthesia. Tom is a member of the faculty of ten dental professional degree programs and has received several awards for outstanding teacher of the year. Tom is well known internationally for his regular contributions to several dental professional journals. Through his informative, humorous and engaging live seminars and webinars, Tom as earned his reputation as the go-to specialists for making pharmacology practical and useful for all members of the dental team.

David E. Umsted, DDS

David E. Umsted, DDS graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1977. He spent 35 years (1977-2012) in the private practice of general dentistry with an emphasis in removable prosthodontics. He has been a member of the faculty at University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry for six years (2011-2017) and is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics. He became an Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Tennessee Health Science CenterCollege of Dentistry in 2011.

Cindy Saylors, MEd, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT)

Cindy Saylors is a Professor and the Director for the Division of Radiologic Imaging Sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). She has her Master’s Degree in adult education and advanced certification in CT. Cindy has taught many courses, especially Radiation Physics, CT Physics, and sectional anatomy courses. She is also an active member of the Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences (AEIRS). Cindy’s areas of expertise are medical radiography, radiation dose issues and CT.

Cindy and Catherine Warren have collaborated on projects and presentations at the local, state, and national levels for the past five years. They continue to work on original dental radiation dose research.

Catherine Warren, RDH, MEd

Catherine Warren is a registered dental hygienist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene, College of Health Professions at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She has been actively teaching clinical dental hygiene for 30 years.

Catherine is the President of an infection control compliance company and has presented numerous continuing education courses on infection control. She serves as an infection control evaluator for the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners. Catherine is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP).

Catherine and Cindy Saylors have collaborated on projects and presentations at the local, state, and national levels for the past five years. They continue to work on original dental radiation dose research.

Gary Zelesky

Gary has had the privilege of presenting to numerous dental conferences internationally. A verbal defibrillator his presentations make all the difference in people from going through the motions as excited, intentional, passionate and profitable, both emotionally and financially. Gary has been a youth pastor, oil field hand, homeless outreach director, business owner, college professor, consultant, author, radio show host, but best known as conference speaker. Gary is passionate about being married to his best friend, Cherisse. Together, they live in Northern California. Gary is the proud dad of Mark, Leigh Ann and Nicole. “It does not get any better!”

The original recommendations and the summary are meant to help dental health care workers (DHCW) achieve compliance. It is important that DHCW as well as patients be protected from getting infections from dental health care settings. This course will look at both OSHA regulations for staff as well as safe recommendations for patients.

8:30 am – 11:30 amCurrent Trends and Strategies in the Management of my Most Common Oral Pathology Patient Referrals Featured speaker: Mark Anderson, DDSCourse code: 126/3 hours CE

In my clinical practice, I see and treat a wide array of disease entities. Some of these are only seen on occasion, while others are seen on a weekly basis. This course will present the most common of these disease entities and discuss my current treatment strategies. Conditions such as lichen planus and burning mouth syndrome are seen quite regularly and are often managed with just a few front-line therapies. Should diagnostic confirmation be necessary, the means for achieving this diagnosis will be presented.

Finally, I will present a series of cases that I find interesting. These typically showed oral manifestations that ultimately led to a more widespread systemic disease. Some of these are characterized by rather serious long-term complications.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: • Learn which disease entities are seen most commonly

in my clinical practice

• Learn to identify the more common diseases seen in my clinical practice based upon the clinical signs and symptoms.

• Learn how the final diagnoses is achieved.

Drs. Beauchamp and Lewis Honored by Alumni AssociationThe College of Dentistry Alumni Association will present its top awards at the upcoming 2018 William F. Slagle Dental Meeting March 2–4 in Memphis. An outstanding pediatric dentist and a respected oral and maxillofacial surgeon and past president of the alumni association are this year’s honorees.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNA AWARD Jeannie Beauchamp, DDS (COD ’91)

Dr. Jeannie Beauchamp practiced dental hygiene for seven years before returning to UTHSC to pursue her doctoral degree. Upon graduation, the Oak Ridge, Tennessee, native completed a two-year pediatric dentistry residency in 1993, before going on to practice in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she established Clarksville Pediatric Dentistry, PC, in 1999.

Dr. Beauchamp is actively involved in her community. Her organizational involvement includes Clarksville Sunrise Rotary Club, Clarksville Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, Leadership Clarksville, Boy Scouts of America, Cumberland Bank & Trust, Clarksville Housing Authority, Customs House Museum Foundation, Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Haiti Dental Mission, Good Samaritan Dental Ministry, Head Start Advisory Committee, and the Montgomery County Health Advisory Committee.

A tireless advocate for children’s dental health, Dr. Beauchamp has served on several state advisory panels regarding dental care of children and special needs, including the TennCare Medical Care Advisory Committee. She is also very involved in local, state, and national dental societies.

Dr. Beauchamp is active with the Tennessee Dental Association (TDA), currently serving as secretary and chairman of the TDA Government Affairs Committee. She is past president of the Eighth District Dental Society and past president of Tennessee Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She served the American Dental Association as delegate to the ADA House of Delegates for 10 years. She presently serves on the Council of Government Affairs. She is chairman of the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) PAC committee and chairman of the AAPD Interprofessional Relations Committee.

Dr. Beauchamp is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. She was voted Dentist of the Year by the Tennessee Academy of General Dentistry in 2012.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Robert H. Lewis, Jr., DDS (COD ’76)

After graduating from the UTHSC College of Dentistry, Dr. Lewis completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at UTHSC/City of Memphis Hospital in June 1980.

He and his wife, Mary, who is a 1978 UTHSC College of Nursing graduate, moved to Rogers, Arkansas, where he founded Ozark Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

A former president of the Arkansas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Dr. Lewis is a recipient of the Arkansas State Dental Association Humanitarian Dentist Award and the Arkansas Delta Dental Open Heart Award. He currently serves as president of the UT College of Dentistry Alumni Board of Trustees. Dr. Lewis has been a member of the Craniofacial Surgery Team at Arkansas Children’s Hospital for the last seven years.

The majority of his mission work has been through Operation New Life, a multi- surgical specialty organization from Arkansas founded by Bill Alfonso, DDS, a UT graduate and a plastic surgery colleague. Together they have made more than 27 weeklong mission trips to Honduras, where they instruct plastic surgery residents, maxillofacial surgeons, dental, and medical students to diagnose, develop treatment plans, and surgically manage facial fractures, tumors, and congenital deformities of the face.

In that time, with the help of many other oral and maxillofacial surgeons, they have assessed more than 2,000 patients and provided surgical care for more than 700 patients, who otherwise could not have received treatment. For that, he, Dr. Alfonso, and John Jones, MD, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon from Little Rock, were honored as Distinguished International Professors of Surgery by the Honduran College of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Lewis continues to practice as the senior surgeon in a specialty practice.

His son, Paul, a 2014 UTHSC College of Dentistry graduate, is following in his father’s footsteps, and is completing his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
