Once upon a time . . .

The Background

Friday, 25 May 2012

Page 4: Wild culture brief

. . . in 1981, while foraging for wild foods that he sold to chefs in the city, artist

Whitney Smith came up with theidea of ‘wild culture’.

Hmmm . . . fiddlehead fernson a restaurant plate?

wild groceries + chef cuisine

= wild culture

Friday, 25 May 2012

Whitney discovered his artist friends were intrigued by his enterprise, and his produce.

He turned their curiosity into a piece of performance art.

After the first performance, he knew he had something to sink his teeth into (so to speak).

It was about Earth and Art, but also ideas and fun.

An arts organisation, The Society for the Preservation of Wild Culture, was established in 1981.

In 1986, it published a magazine, a sort of a National Geographic with attitude, inspired partly by the wave of Dadaist and Futurist inspired art work going on in Canada at the time.

The press wrote a great deal about the magazine.

At the Alternative Magazine Awards in 1989, where it was nominated for Most Innovative Magazine of the Year, the jurors called it “indescribable.” Its U.S. distributor declared that the Journal of Wild Culture had “a cult following in Texas.”

Friday, 25 May 2012

Page 7: Wild culture brief

The Ryerson Review of Journalism called it "quirky and innovative . . . The inability to pin down the idea is what makes it attractive, along with its approach to presenting serious themes with a sense of plan and timeliness."

The Globe & Mail explained the magazine’s effect: "There is a bridge between history and landscape. To get people to change their view of the environment, you can’t just argue in economic terms. It’s an emotional thing. People act politically when they get emotionally involved.”

It was said that the magazine was ahead of its time.

Today, the Society for the Preservation ofWild Culture enters a new and exciting stage.

As a community made by editors and designers, contributors and readers — we’re working to grow Wild Culture 2.0.

Wild Culture online is aimed at writers, editors and designers, artists and scientists, photographers and filmmakers, educators and cultural organisations — plus anyone whose curiosity in ‘wild culture’ might lead them to participate in the project.

The project mission is to unleash creativity and discourse through what springs from our consideration of the subject ‘wild culture’.

Our goal is that from this work, somewhere down the line tangible change for the better occurs.

True wildness is lost in much of our lives.

Wild Culture believes that actual wildness — as well as the concept of wildness — needs to be reclaimed and cultivated, and that the various interpretations expressed by our community of contributors will lead to creating a fertile convening space.

Through the community forum of Wild Culture online we hope users will become engaged by the ideas and work of others, and be inspired to create new personal or community-oriented projects that enhance their local places.

Yesterday’s environmental rhetoric of earnestness, duty and shame no longer works as a call to action. It lacks inspiration and delight.

Our vision of balance, social cohesion and renewal begs for new chemistry.

And new lab workers.

Online or offline, perhaps Wild Culture 2.0 is a good container for your goals.

Perhaps you’ve had an idea on the back burner that didn’t fit anywhere else — and might with Wild Culture.

Page 22: Wild culture brief

Ask yourself, which side of the fence is your piece on. Is it inside the fence, or is it on the outside — in wild culture territory?

If you’re not sure if what you want to contribute is ‘wild culture enough’, try this simple test:

Imagine sitting on the fence that goes around The Mainstream. It’s your mainstream, the mainstream you see that isn’t necessarily the mainstream others see.

You’re looking in, but you’re definitely not feeling part of it.

Why contribute to The Journal of Wild Culture?

• We’re working hard to create an online channel that looks good, inspires users and gets a lot of attention for its contributors.

• Our editors work with you to make your work as good as it can be. If people respond well to your work, the community voting system, like Reddit, will bring it to the fore.

• All your work is archived and forever available.

• Each contributor has a profile page designed to:— connect them to like-minded collaborators and increase their participation in the community— promote their work, whatever it is, and enhance their livelihood by letting others know what they have to offer. If your livelihood is not increased by your participation with Wild Culture, we want to know about it. Unleashing creativity for the common and individual good is our goal.

• ‘Most loved pieces’ are featured in the regularly published Journal of Wild Culture downloadable magazine and the Wild Culture Annum, a book. Both pay royalties.

• The Wild Culture Community Fund supports proposed local projects that are pitched by our members and voted on by contributors and fund donors.

Finally . . .

To be truly creative means not being afraid to take chances and to work in open and collaborative ways — even with yourself — where playfulness and intellectual substance do a strong dance.

We sometimes forget that passion for creation, recreation and fertility are non-human and human characteristics, and that planet and people are not as separated and at odds as sometimes occurs in everyday life. Bridging that gap is in itself a profoundly creative act, and it’s a task that the editors of Wild Culture want to address, among many other things. It’s a beautiful journey, trying to get at these understandings that the human mind is often reluctant to pursue.

Coming together around the idea ofdiscovering, making and preserving ‘wild culture’.

Raising awareness of key issues and working together to do something about them.

With play and rigour, the problems are ours to solve.
