Letter from Reverend Hilary
‘There but not There’
And some there be, which have no memorial; who are perished,
as though they had never been … With their seed shall
continually remain a good inheritance, and their children are

peace; but their name liveth for evermore.

The appearance of the black silhouette of a First World War soldier by the village sign focuses our thoughts on those who died in the ‘war to end all wars’ and whose absence was keenly felt. Likewise, the ‘There but not There’ transparent silhouettes in our two churches seek not only to commemorate those named on our memorials but to educate particularly today’s younger generation, born nearly 100 years after the outbreak of WW1, to understand what led to the deaths of 888,246 British and commonwealth service personnel.
Funds raised from their sale have gone towards work carried out by charities such as Help for Heroes and Combat Stress in supporting today’s veterans who are suffering from the mental and physical wounds of their service.
Village resident Margaret Cottiss at 104 is one of a few still with us who were alive during WW1. Her family life was profoundly affected by the death of her father in the conflict. Kate Luard, who retired to Abbotts on Church Road, nursed sick and wounded soldiers on the Western Front working on Ambulance Trains and in Casualty Clearing Stations (CCSs), sometimes just a mile behind the front line. She was awarded a Royal Red Cross and bar for exceptional service in military nursing.
To find out more about Kate and others who served from our parishes please do seek out the display in St. Bartholomew’s so that when we remember their passing during the November remembrance services and lighting of the Beacon you can put faces to some of their names.

Women’s Christian Fellowship ...
We did not meet in August so our Chairman Liz welcomed everyone back and gave a brief outline of what the next few months' meetings hold.
Our September speaker was Mr Paul Danvers from the RNLI who gave a very interesting talk on this wonderful voluntary organisation. After a short history of its origins, which were established in 1824, he went on to explain the different classes of lifeboats and what they are used for today and where. The larger craft can now go 100 miles out to sea and on average 23 people are rescued every day around our coastline. Paul explained how tragic events had changed the Association. The lifeboats were not allowed on The Thames until the Marchioness disaster and now it is the busiest station in the country and still manned by volunteers who work in shifts. Another change is that hovercraft are now used in Morecambe Bay where there are treacherous quicksands and where a group of cockle pickers were drowned by the racing incoming tide.
The RNLI have no government funding and rely entirely on public donations and legacies. The only paid members are the mechanics at each station who make sure the boats are running safely and ready to go at a moment's notice each day.
The afternoon closed with refreshments and birthday cards were handed out, after which Happy Birthday was sung with gusto to Margaret Cottiss who celebrated her 104th birthday the day before!
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 24th October at the usual time of 2.30pm when it will be our AGM to be followed by cream tea.

Wickham Bishops “Over 60’s” Club ... Editor’s Note: The report in the October magazine was sent by a contributor who deputises for Kaye Freathy from time to time. It appears that there was some misunderstanding about the future of the club, for which I apologise, though I included the report in good faith. Here is Kaye’s report for this month.
Our meeting in October was well attended and, as the entertainment had been re-scheduled, it gave the club members a chance to discuss our future.
Understandably, members were concerned about the report submitted by the club to the Parish Magazine which was not factually correct. In essence, the Chair and some other committee members were proposing to stand down at the end of the year, which affords the club some four months to determine its future under a new committee or format.
Following useful debate, it was suggested that we follow the "Drop-In" regime, which everyone thought a good compromise. Outings and speakers are becoming more and more difficult to arrange and if, by dropping these, our afternoons could continue, the majority voted in favour of a trial of six months commencing February 2019.

Witham Choral presents Rossini ...
Two talented keyboard players will be performing in Witham Choral’s Rossini concert on Saturday 24 November at 7.30 p.m. Antony Mortimer, the choir’s regular rehearsal pianist, will be playing the harmonium part and Stephen Evans will be the pianist for the composer’s Petite Messe Solennelle. “We are delighted that these two musicians will be joining us” Musical Director Patrick McCarthy told us. “I am happy to leave the beautiful, joyful accompaniment in their safe hands.”
A quartet of the choir’s favourite soloists will also take part in the concert at Witham United Reformed Church in Newland Street: Gill Wilson (soprano), Elaine Henson (mezzo), Paul Bloomfield (tenor) and Alan Loader (bass).
“It will be a splendid evening, I am sure,” said Witham Choral Chairman Revd. Stephen Northfield. “Rossini wrote the Messe towards the end of his life to provide an income for his widow but it is by no means solemn. It has an operatic feel and is full of wonderful tunes. A real gem.”

Great Totham Women’s Institute ...
At our meeting in October we had the privilege of hosting a Wooden Solitary Soldier, supplied by Great Totham Parish Council, to honour all those that gave so much during the 1st World War and subsequent conflicts. Our commemoration was marked by a change to the start of proceedings with our usual flower arrangement being replaced with a display of handmade poppies, the work of Brenda Steele, and, instead of our usual rendition of Jerusalem Tina Finch read the poem “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon. This was followed by a minute’s silence.
The main part of the evening took the form of a demonstration by Catherine Brown who produces a variety of articles, mainly animals, made of willow. She showed us how she softened the willow to make it pliable and then produced a dragonfly and circular frame for a wreath. We were able to ask her questions as she worked. Under her expert hands it was made to look easy!
Next month Mike Benning will give a talk entitled ‘Barney’s Bobbies’

Mowers and Strimmers …
A team of willing volunteers, affectionately known as the Mowers and Strimmers, keeps the Churchyard and burial ground across the road from the Church, looking good by weekly grass cutting and occasional hedge cutting. There are around twelve in the team, all men though ladies would be most welcome, but as inevitably happens with groups like this, numbers are falling due to ill health, pressure of work, etc.
We would welcome some more people onto the team, if you can spare a few hours (at a time to suit you), about once per four to six weeks. We work in pairs and can offer flexibility to allow for holidays, etc. All equipment is provided and training will be given if necessary.

News from Neighbourhood Watch ... Village news
I hope that you received my notices about the spate of thefts and burglaries that occurred last month, passed on to you by your hard working street coordinators. If you did not receive information it may be that you are living in one of the areas that, at present, does not have a street coordinator. The roads not covered are:

Kelvedon Road (and Finches) Great Totham Road
If you would be prepared to volunteer to cover one of these roads please contact me, it would be nice for the village to have 100% coverage.

I am in the process of setting up a NHW Facebook page for our village. I will use this to pass out information quickly, and to give additional details about crimes reported in the Maldon area. This should be up and running by the time you receive this magazine so take a look – hopefully this will be a useful additional source of information for those of you who can access Facebook.
Neighbourhood Watch Meet and Greet
I have linked up with the Parish Council and will be attending their surgeries, held in the library once a month. If you would like to meet me in order to talk about things that concern you please come along. I will also have a range of very useful anti-crime items with me eg: door handle and shed alarms, purse bells and cables etc. Some items will be free, others can be purchased at reasonable cost. My first ‘meet and greet’ will be on Saturday 17th November (10.30 – 11.30am) and I look forward to seeing you there.

From the Parish Council … The Council held a regular monthly meeting on the 2nd October and an
additional general meeting on the 19th October. The minutes of both meetings
can be read on the Parish Council website which is

We were pleased to have two excellent candidates for co-option to the vacant
seat on the Council. After a lengthy discussion at the meeting in October, we
appointed Karl Jarvis and look forward to his participation in Council matters.
Councillors were asked to suggest suitable street names for the two new roads
to be built in a small housing development between the garage and the Prances
Scout site. The names ‘Rosina Place’ and ‘Heron Way’ have been proposed -
Rosina in memory of the late Cllr ‘Tilly’ Pink, whose real name was Rosina (Tilly
was a nick-name) and Heron in memory of Clifford Heron who was a Parish
Councillor, Village Hall Trustee and general benefactor to the village.
The Council holds a ‘Saturday Surgery’ in the Village Library, on the third
Saturday in the month, from 10.30 to 11.30 am. Residents are invited to ‘drop-
in’ to discuss any matter of concern, in confidence if necessary. No appointment
is needed and we would encourage you to take advantage of this facility as it
has been rather under-used recently.
The next general meeting will be held on the 6th November 2018 and the
Planning Committee will meet if required on Friday 23rd November. Residents
are invited to attend and may speak during the ‘Public Forum’ section of either
meeting. Councillors may be contacted individually, or via the Parish Clerk on

The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group had hoped to produce a consultative version of the Wickham Bishops Neighbourhood Plan by the start of October. However, there has been a slight delay and it is now expected to be published on the 16th November on the Parish Council website (www.wickhambishopsparishcouncil.org).

SPECIAL REQUEST - YOUR HELP NEEDED
COMMEMORATING THE CENTENARY OF THE END OF THE GREAT WAR
ARMISTICE 1918
One hundred years on, plans are in progress both here at St Bartholomew’s and St Nicholas to commemorate Armistice Day 1918. These plans will include remembering those fallen during WW1 as well as those who served in the forces and in civilian capacities, from All Souls Day at the beginning of November through to Remembrance Sunday and beyond.
The display is in St Bartholomew’s Church in three parts;
1. A scroll of names of all of those associated with the village who were ‘lost’ in the Great War; although there is a Memorial tablet in the church we believe it is not complete.
2. A display of details of those lost, with photo and brief details. Please dig into your family archives and submit photos and details.
3. A display of details of any who served in the Great War preferably associated with the village but all items welcome.

Battle’s Over Commemoration
A commemoration of the end of the First World War will be held in the Promenade Park in Maldon, starting at 6.00 pm.
There will be excerpts from the original 1916 film ‘The Battle of the Somme’ which has been digitally remastered. This, together with music, readings and the participation of local cadet forces, set against the back drop of the River Blackwater, will provide a memorable and fitting tribute.
The beacon at the park will be lit at 7.00 pm; one of over a thousand beacons across the country being lit at the same time.

Ben Cobey ... In St Bartholomew’s Church, there is an excellent display of many of the local people who served in the forces during the First World War. If you have not yet seen this, it is well worth paying a visit where you, like me, will be amazed at the amount of biographical detail that has been gathered. I urge you to take a look ...
Not included, however, is one young man born in Maldon, who has recently been honoured by the naming of a road in the new south Maldon development in his name - Ben Cobey Avenue.
Ben Cobey was a driver for the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed whilst saving a second gun of the 37th Battery during the “great retreat” from advancing German Infantry at Le Cateau. He was just 19 years old when he lost his life in the First World War in August 1914.
Ben was born at 39 Church Street, Maldon on 10th March 1895. His mother, Maria Anne Cobey, was unmarried when she gave birth to him. He was excluded from St Mary The Virgin’s war memorial as “his sort” were not welcome by the Church. His name was eventually added to the other memorial in Maldon and, belatedly, is to be added to that in the Church.
Ben enlisted in his late teens. He sailed from Ireland and arrived in France with his Battery on 19th August 1914. He went into action at Mons on 24th August 1914. He came under fire from the Germans for 12 hours and ordered to get mounted. He was killed whilst saving a (second) gun of the 37th Battery during the “great retreat” from advancing German Infantry at Le Cateau. He was shot out of the saddle riding one of the centre pair during the action. He was seen to have “swayed in the saddle, lurched sideways and pitched heavily to the ground” but the team “could not stop”. It took 9 months to notify his family of his death.
His colleagues – Drivers Frederick Luke and Job Henry Charles Drain and Captain Douglas Reynolds all received a Victoria Cross’ for their actions, but Ben missed out on that as well because of his controversial (for the time) parentage.

Kate Luard - an update ... In previous issues of this magazine, we have included an article about Kate Luard who was a Nursing Sister in northern France during WW1 and was subsequently awarded the RRC and Bar (a rare distinction) and was Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service in the field.
A century ago Kate was to embark on the pinnacle of her WW1 service when she was Sister in Charge of a unit which became one of the most dangerous when it was relocated, in late July 1917, to Brandhoek close to the Front where she had a staff of forty nurses and nearly 100 orderlies taking in the wounded from the Battle of Passchendaele.
After the war, she, and two of her sisters, settled in Wickham Bishops, living in ‘Abbotts’ in Church Road. Kate and her sister, Rose, are buried close to the main door into the Church. Several of our older residents remember the sisters driving around the village in an Austin 7. As none of them was tall, they could barely see over the steering wheel and so the car appeared to be driving itself!
During the war, she exchanged numerous letters with her family at home. Many of those she wrote were published in two books: ‘Diary of a Nursing Sister on the Western Front 1914-1915, published anonymously in 1915, and ‘Unknown Warriors: The Letters of Kate Luard, RRC and Bar, Nursing Sister in France 1914-1918’ first published in 1930. This second book was republished in hardback format in 2014 and is now also available in paperback format (currently priced at £14.99)
A ‘Blue Plaque’, commemorating Kate’s birthplace, is to be unveiled in Aveley this autumn.

At our meeting in October, we listened to Louise Nicholls, the head
gardener from Ulting Wick, as she gave an illustrated talk on plants for
every month of the year. So many Latin names in so short a time but,
fortunately, a hand-out is available to members.
Our speaker in November, on Wednesday 7th, will be Darren Lerigo
speaking on ‘What do I do with this space’ - garden design ideas from
around the world. Darren is a popular speaker who has an excellent
reputation so this should be a talk to not miss. The meeting starts at
7.30 pm in the Church Hall and visitors are most welcome to join us for
an interesting evening, good company and perhaps a glass of wine.
On Sunday December 9th, we will be holding our ‘Christmas Quiz’ in
the Green Man in Little Braxted. Last year’s quiz was great fun and this
year’s promises to be even better. More details next month.

supplier, at half the normal price.

November in the Garden
Now is the time to tidy up around the garden. Cut back perennial plants
that are over, prune climbers before winter winds can damage them
and sweep up leaves.
A pile of logs and leaves could be an ideal spot for hibernating
hedgehogs, so be sure to check for any wildlife before lighting a
bonfire.
Make the most of any dry days to treat, preserve and repair painted
exterior wood such as fences, decking and garden benches.
Plant tulips, either into borders or containers for a magnificent display
next spring. It is also a good time to plant bare-rooted trees and fruit
bushes.

We have been informed that the clinic at St Peter’s Hospital for taking blood samples has changed their opening hours. They are now open from 7 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday, i.e. an hour earlier than previously.
Remember that the clocks go back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday 28th October.
It’s a good idea to test your smoke alarms on the same day!

Back Words …
As I write this, it is 30 years to the day since we moved into Wickham
Bishops. Our furniture had been ‘in store’ for three months as we had
been without a home of our own for that time. Knowing that we
would not be given the keys until quite late in the day, I had booked
the furniture to be delivered the following morning - at least I thought
that I had. Unfortunately, I gave the wrong date so it arrived two
days later - my wife, pregnant with our second child at the time, was
not amused! However, when she discovered that the general stores, in
what is now Aquarius, sold her favourite Thayers Ice Cream, all was
forgiven.
It has been an eventful 30 years, with 13 of them as a single parent,
two jobs followed by early retirement, remarriage to my wonderful
present wife accompanied by her two children, my children growing
from first day at primary school to have successful careers and many
happy memories. Still not sufficient hours in the day to do all the
work and little time for relaxation, but we’ve survived!
