Knock Out Netball Carnival
Congratulations to all the girls that played in the Knock Out Netball Carnival in Week
Two. Your behaviour and participation in this
carnival was a pleasure to watch. I was really impressed with your team work and
support for one another.
Well done to the year 8/9 Division One team, who won the carnival, and now go
to Adelaide on 28 August to complete in the State final.
Junk to Funk Congratulations to Ms Kober, Ms Murphy
and their students for their involvement in the recent Junk to Funk.
Ms Murphy and her class entered some
amazing creations to the event, which were displayed in our last Newsletter.
Ms Kober and her VET class provided the catering for the evening. I am still re-
ceiving positive comments about the
quality of the food served. Well done to all of you. This was a fan-
tastic fundraiser for the Whyalla Special Education Centre.
Open Night
Last Wednesday night was our Annual
Open Night. It was extremely successful with 206 visitors coming to have a look
at the school and what we have to offer. Thank you to Mr Sean Sheedy for his
very careful organisation and coordina-
tion of the evening. If you know of any parent who was una-
ble to attend Open Night but would like a tour of the school. Please encourage
them to ring the school to make a time to have a tour with one of our leadership
team members.
Snow Tour
On Saturday the Year 10 students left for our Annual Snow Tour in Falls Creek.
After a very long 19 hour bus trip, they
are all safely in Falls Creek and have had their first day of skiing.
This is an amazing experience for the students involved and I look forward to
hearing all about it when they return.
Year 10 Subject Selection Interviews
During Week Three Ms Emma Hunter and Year 10 caregroup teachers worked
with staff from Edward John Eyre, to conduct the subject selection interviews
for our Year 10 students.
This was a very successful process for Year 10 students and parents in prepara-
tion for Year 11 next year. If you were unable to attend these interviews catch
up interviews are being scheduled in the
near future. Bevan Braves Basketball Club is looking for new and existing players to join for their
Summer Season, if this interests you or your child, U7’s to U17’s Boys and Girls, please contact us at [email protected]
KNOCKOUT NETBALL
On Tuesday 1 August Whyalla High School convened the Western District KnockOut Netball carnival. It was a superb day for netball. Whyalla High took three 8/9 netball teams and one year 10 team. To choose these teams we had a trial
period and an enormous amount of girls came and participated in this process. The students we took to the carnival
were all supportive, helpful and fantastic sports on the day and throughout the trials. The girls represented the school with fabulous school spirit and all of our teams won at least one game during the day, which is a brilliant result. A huge
thankyou goes out to the Whyalla Netball Association for their support and each of the staff members that helped put together this day. A huge congratulations to the first year 8/9 netball team, who won the division one competition and
will now head to Adelaide in week 6 to compete in the state finals!

‘Where the Outback Meets the Sea’. They used old curtains, tissue paper
decorations and tree leaves to create
a dress that displayed the earthiness of the outback and the flow of the
ocean. Georgia Woolford, Jessica Childs and
Clare Hunter created a dress that utilised bio degradable garbage bags
and caution tape. The dress was
striking on stage with the garbage bags flowing as the model walked
the runway.
The girls and I would like to thank
Mrs Norman for her support and ex-
pertise when creating the garments.
Without you, our dresses wouldn’t
have been as successful as they
were.

STUDENT VOICE
Student Voice has had a busy start to
the term and is eager to continue the
pace for the rest of the year! Below is a quick update about what we have been
up to in the last few weeks.
On Wednesday 9 August, selected
members of the Student Voice attend-ed a meet up with all of the other
schools on the Eyre Peninsula. Students were able to share their experiences
and goals that they have at their individual sites to develop leader-
ship skills and plans for the future.
It was interesting to compare the
younger leaders and senior leaders ide-as about what already is happening
and what could happen in the future at
Whyalla High. Surprisingly, both our senior and junior leaders identified con-
necting with community to enhance learning as a priority for the Student
Voice Representatives. The leaders also
enjoyed the time to connect with other schools to make comparisons between
different schooling experiences.
The year 10 leaders have also being running anti-bullying programs with the
Year 9 Care Groups on a weekly basis.
These sessions have been planned and created by the Leaders, and it is up to
them to negotiate with teachers to make sure that they work for each
class. The leaders involved so far have
shown fantastic leadership skills and brilliant resilience to challenges
they have encountered. The year 9 students are excited and engaged in
these sessions which is fantastic to see!

with her strong performances in that, she now has the chance to
make the All Australia team. A fan-
tastic achievement Hannah, well done.

JUNK TO FUNK
In year 10, students are provided with an opportunity to complete a Vocational
Education Training (VET) Certificate I in Hospitality. Students attend lessons
every Monday to develop their cooking
skills and understanding of the require-ments of working in the Hospitality In-
dustry. As a part of the Hospitality program,
students were involved in catering for
the Whyalla Special Education Centre’s Junk to Funk fundraiser. Student’s pro-
duced a two course supper for 160 guests consisting of a tasting plate and
an apple rose for dessert. VET students were able to gain an in-
sight to the Hospitality Industry and the
importance of Food Safety and Hygiene practices. Students did an outstanding
job, demonstrating effective team work, communication and time management
skills.
Students that attended on the night included: Beatrice Andal, Bradley Whit-
ing, Charlize Chenelle, Janice Kloppers, Abby Lawrie, Martilette Allers, Jimwell
Aran and Cat Bishop. They all did an
amazing job should be very proud of what they achieved.
A huge thank you also to Tara Lampe,
Shannon Parsons and Don Gapp for
assisting and supervising on the night,
Veronica Harvey and Paige Murphy for
assisting with food preparation and to
the volunteer waiters Georgina Wed-
ding, Brooke Vitaljic, Josef Agius, Geor-
gia Travis-Birch, Samuel Keen, Mikaela

JUNK TO FUNK
On 5 August the Year 10 Textiles class from semester one participated in the
Whyalla Special Education Centres (WSEC) Junk to Funk Fashion Parade.
This is the major fundraiser for the
school that provides the students with new equipment and resources.
The WHS students worked on their dresses during term two and put the
finishing touches on them in week one
of this term. They were taken to the WSCE to be judged ‘on the hanger’ this
is where a judge carefully inspects the dresses construction and the amount of
recyclable materials used. On the Fri-day before the event the students prac-
ticed walking the runway in preparation
for the night, excitement was building as the girls practiced their poses and
discussed what they would say during the interview section.
The night was a success with each stu-
dent confidently modelling their gar-ment and answering the MC’s ques-
tions. Emily Evans, Kathryn Ewbank and Amalia Evans received runner up
for their fairy floss inspired creation.
The girls used old Whyalla High School promotional banners and blue and
white hair nets from the cooking practi-cals.
Dayna Jenkins, Maggie Hill and Lisa Reupana created a contemporary dress
inspired by the amount of denim prod-
ucts available in op shops. Their dress was titled ‘Denim Distress’, the judges
commented on their effective use of denim flower detailing and how the
dress could be worn in everyday life.
Renee Copley, Jessica Bennett and Car-la Broadbent created a dress that was
inspired by the Whyalla motto of
Pupil Free Days Please mark in your diaries that Whyalla
High School has two pupil free days
coming up. The first is Thursday 7 September,
when staff will be involved in a Visible Learning PD session.
The second is Friday 8 September when the school is closed for both staff and
students. This day is due to the Royal
Adelaide Show.
Mobile Phones Can I please remind all parents and stu-
dents that mobile phones must be kept
in school bags on silent during lesson times. It is not okay for students to
have their mobile phones in their pock-ets or pencil cases.
Students have full access to their phones during recess and lunch time
breaks.
If you need to make contact with your child during lesson time, please ring
Student Services and not their mobile phones. Staff will ensure that your child
gets the message.
If students are found with mobile phones in class, they will be taken and
stored at Student Services for the re-mainder of the day.
Parent Learning Conversations Please note that this term staff will be
having Parent Learning Conversations with parents about your child’s progress
and areas of development. The dates for Parent Learning Conver-
sations this term are Monday 18 Sep-
tember, Wednesday 20 September and Monday 25 September.
If you have any questions or concerns
about your child’s learning at Whyalla
