From the Editor Well haven’t things changed since the last magazine ! Since there are very few reports due to lack of runs caused by social distancing I have contacted a few members to ask for profiles from them. I am pleased to say that nearly all those contacted have made the effort to assist by doing this, and the first of those appear in this month’s Radiator. More will be coming in the next editions as well. Now that things are rolling with this I would love to receive more of these from other members. As I have said before, members are interested in other members, and what better way to get to know members than to be able to read about them, so even if you think you have nothing interesting to say about yourself we would still like to get to know you better. Put pen to paper and send it to me. Photos always make an article more interesting too, so if you have some, send them in too. Many thanks to all those who have helped out by sending these in for publication. All club activities are put on hold for the time being but I will still include the events calendar in this edition. I am unable to see the problem with taking our vehicles out for a drive, as long as we don’t congregate anywhere, but apparently the police don’t agree with me on that. I fail to see how you can be more isolated than riding a motorcycle out in the open, or driving your car away from others. Hopefully we will be given the OK to get out and go for a drive/ride soon.

President’s Report Hello members. As I write this report, it appears that the world as we have known it has been turned upside down. THE VIRUS..... has taken over and as you are all aware, there have been shutdowns of massive proportions in any sporting event, community gatherings, large churches and street parades, to name a few. The money market is in meltdown and I am sure that there will be major losses for many people as a result of the pandemic. The executive committee has discussed procedures to follow in regard to hygiene and I would request the following notes must be addressed by all. 1. If you have a sore throat, cough, runny nose or any symptoms of colds or flu, PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE NEXT MEETING. 2. If you are feeling OK and do come, than you will be asked to use sanitizer on your hands as you enter the hall. 3. NO Handshaking greetings. 4. Before supper, you will be asked to sanitize your hands before eating. 5. Please wash your hands with soap and water after entering the toilet. These are good hygiene principles and we need to get thru this as painless as possible. We will monitor the requirements as far as crowd size numbers are issued by regulators and will make announcements as required. So ! The answer is .......Get the classic out of the shed, give it a good cleanup, take your best friend and go for a drive in the country. Have a picnic lunch, go to a quiet restaurant, have a quite drink ( Soda water ??), and enjoy the moment. BY the way ULP was down to 106 in Adelaide today. Been even lower lately – 69.9 I saw last night ! Editor There is plenty planned for the club so keep an eye on club events printed in this edition. I want to wish the members travelling to Albury, safe travels (assuming the event is going ahead) and I look forward to a report later in the year. Keep safe, healthy and stay wise. ENJOY THE DRIVE regards Warren

“Southerly Touring”- Casterton The Early bird 4 cars set off on Thursday 5th March for a leisurely trip to Bordertown for an overnight stay- the men polished their cars and the women indulged in a little retail therapy. Friday saw morning tea at Naracoorte, where Ken and Rhyl Blackwood had an unexpected meeting on the side of the road with the current owner of their Carmen Ghia, the car is much enjoyed. Whilst Dean and Jude Evans went to visit a fellow Rover owner who left his details under the windscreen wiper- Not the parking ticket as was first thought. Lunch at Penola and on to Casterton to meet up with the rest of the Riverland contingent who did the trip in a day. In all we were, (in age order of the vehicles) Dean and Jude Evans 1949 Rover PE75 Sedan Ron and Leta Kohler 1952 Austin A 40 Somerset Ken and Rhyl Blackwood 1971 VW “Brian” Brenton and Kay Sando 1971 MGB tourer (red) Robert and Glenys Leske 1971 MGB tourer (white) Jeff and Chris Matthews modern Terry and Jenny Kuchel modern Robert and Val Tucker modern + caravan.

After registration and a cuppa on Saturday morning we went to visit a “Glass House” at Sandford. - No glass as the property is under contract for sale, but we met some friendly alpacas instead. We found out firsthand why front opening doors are aptly named “Suicide Doors”. After a visit to the scenic lookout over the valley and township we joined the Observation Tour of 50 miles. We were following a bright red Dodge Dart; it sounded like a very loud lawn mower 2 stroke engine and blew exhaust all over the tailing cars. Hence there was some hasty passing and very quick U-turns to avoid the vehicle. Dinner at the Football Clubrooms, the Riverland group took up a full table. We enjoyed the swaggie Competition. The winner was “Daisy from under the bridge”, complete with bike, cutlery, potty and all her worldly goods. The male swaggie had a very impressive collection of old flagons roped to his belt. At the auction after some lively bidding, $22.50 was paid for a roll of toilet paper that was carefully placed in their home safe overnight and insurance by Shannons (one of the major sponsors) was organized next morning. Sunday morning saw more polishing and cleaning of cars, mainly to remove exhaust from the Dart, ready to participate in the popular judging. We travelled a scenic route to Andrew and Marika McKinnon’s “Ardno Deer Farm “at Strathdownie to enjoy lunch and a very informative tour of the farm processing deer antlers(velvet) and venison. The corona virus will affect their future trading as China is their biggest market where the velvet is used in traditional medicines. It seems every part of the deer is used, antlers(velvet), meat(venison)and skins. Sunday Night after dinner saw the draw of the major raffle won by Chris Matthews, a food hamper from Foodworks, luckily, they were in a modern and had room for a large box. Rhyl Blackwood generously donated a handmade quilt that was chosen over the food hamper and much appreciated by the MGTC owners. Dean and Jude Evans’ Rover P3 was a very worthy winner in the Post 1939 section of the popular choice and Ron and Leta Kohler were no.1 entry with their Austin A40 Somerset. Continued /over

Monday morning we met for Bacon and Eggs Breakfast and a final farewell before travelling home or further afield .We, as first time attendees, were impressed with the smooth running of the event by such a small membership group as the “Casterton Motor Enthusiasts Club”, the friendliness of the other attendees, the picturesque surroundings, the generosity of the local traders and how hospitable the townsfolk were. It was notable as a club (RVVC) how we supported other members and represented our club to the broader community and to other motor enthusiasts’ clubs. An enjoyable long weekend, over 1000miles safely travelled by all. Glenys Leske

Jeff Matthews My Profile. Living in a small country town Laura in the Midnorth, three garages a flour mill and the Golden North ice cream factory, I left school and worked at Golden North in the maintenance shed helping fix trucks and trailers and on Wednesday on the line making Giant Twins. On weekends I worked in Hugo Myers Ampol Garage sweeping floors and general tidy up , then into a flour mill driving trucks and making flour where I bought my first car a 1936 Hudson Terraplane. What a beast. In later years met Chris and I bought a VW Beatle between us, then got married and later traded and purchased a Galant followed by another Galant then onto a S Series Valiant which was a farm run around and had lots of rust so soon moved onto a 1976 HJ Kingswood. Then to an AU Falcon to a Ford Territory, now a Holden Colorado to tow the caravan. But around 2008 I was made redundant from Telstra after 32 years and needed something to do and to my surprise Chris bought me the FX Holden for Christmas. 6 months up on blocks doing a few things brakes etc, Trailed it to Shepperton to the 20th National Rally while diving around the town I stripped the clutch. After getting home to Renmark the motor and gear box was removed and all fixed up since then all has run quite well, By then I had joined the club (RVCCC) and have since had many of fun trips (Port Pirie ,Mildura, Broken Hill, Casterton and many local runs ) and hope many more. I enjoy the car club, am not a committee person but enjoy helping elsewhere when needed and where. I still have the Kingswood and that may be another project one day.

A masochist’s dream……restoring and maintaining pommy gizmos with wheels.

By Chris Bennett It’s all like a tango really, one step forward, two steps back. Sometimes, for added variety, it’s three steps back……and this is all from a bloke who according to his better half, can’t dance! I’m sure you can all relate to the challenges of restoring and maintaining classic and vintage vehicles. Weirdly, it’s fun and a great way to relax and forget everything else as you “do battle” with these stubborn, cantankerous, difficult and obstinate old pieces of machinery. It’s a great feeling when you finally win the battle and you get to take that elusive step forward. As any bikie will tell you, “if it’s got breasts or wheels, it will give you trouble”, or something to that effect. The biggest challenge I have is my 1947 Ariel Square Four, which has been over 15 years in the making, which must be some sort of a record. It’s now getting very close to completion, thanks to the current travel and social restrictions which gave a perfect excuse to get out into the shed and work on it. Actually, it’s been close to completion a few times…….until the thing came up with yet another two or three steps backwards for me. I bought the bike down in Victoria for a good price in a going, but untidy condition. Somehow I convinced the wife to accompany me and let me buy it (it was her birthday and of course I suggested that the Ariel was a perfect gift for her). A piece of cake, I thought to myself. Strip and restore the frame, wheels, and tank, check the motor and gear box and away we go. Yeah, right. Then the reality hit. The frame had been strangely cut under the tank and a bit of rod inserted to join the top bar. No need for welding, apparently. The tank which appeared to be OK, actually had a metal spray over it under the paint which plugged up the rust holes. It looked pretty presentable, but the metal spray was peeling off and the tank leaked. Discarded the tank and found a replacement in the States, thanks to eBay. The speedo was incorrect and was silasticed into the tank. eBay to the rescue, again. The dynamo and distributor were incorrect and came from a later model and had been bodged into the system. I’m an originality freak, so back onto eBay again. While they are about as common as rocking horse poop, eventually a correct one was found in the States. The frame received two coats of powder coat, the second after realising the frame was not straight after the initial repair and the subsequent heating to straighten the frame by a specialist ruined the first coat. Then of course, we get to the motor. It actually went and sounded pretty good. However, internal inspection revealed a pretty ordinary rebuild so off to a specialist it went. Eighteen months later and the parting with a huge amount of money saw the motor finally installed in the frame and started up. Beautiful, easy to start, sounded great and then chuff, chuff, chuff out of the side! All four pots were happily chuffing away through the gasket. The specialist genius who resleeved the block had not checked the mating surface and the resleeve had left the surface with a profile resembling a banana……aaahhggggghh! So, pull the offending bits off again and into Barmera to have head and block shaved. So, at this stage, I am busily reinstalling the motor and then, hopefully, have only to align the wheels (the rebuild was a little off, naturally) and it’s off to whenever the next club bike ride is. Unless, of course, there are more surprises and a few more steps backwards in store! When finished, it will be a beautiful bike, with all the charm of what is really a pre-war design. Very fancy paint job on the tank, with a full dash panel in the tank. Speedo, oil pressure gauge, trouble light and eight-day clock. All these parts are original and correct and yes, all are thanks to eBay. Chris Bennett Can’t wait to see it on the next Club run Chris – whenever that may be. Editor

Historic Motorcycles Once again our latest rides have been thwarted, first by the weather again, and now by the restrictions due the Covid19. As I said in my editor’s comment on page 5 I cannot see why we can’t get out for a ride on our bikes as this to me is certainly keeping social distance and is quite responsible. However Warren has had information from the local police that the classic cars can’t be taken for a ride just for fun, so I guess that applies to the bikes as well. I know I have had some essential business to do that required taking the bike ! so we still have the chance to get them out. The recent rock and roll weekend was a great success, and it was good to see a number of bikes in attendance at that. Below is a report on that from David Schubert which I have left unedited. Thanks for the report David.

Renmark Rocks On I thought since nothing much is going on due to the corona's, I'd take the opportunity to help fill the pages of the radiator magazine and get an unedited article in regarding the Renmark rock n roll show. Well I rocked up at about 10:00 am on my trusty tt500 yammy and as planned outside the Renmark hotel on the corner of Para Street and Murray Avenue was the rvccc Classic Bike Exhibition. Already there were some lovely looking old and some a little bit old motorbikes there with more to come as the day rolled on. After the normal greetings with the back and forth banter and the poke in the ribs gidday it was time to purvey the motorbikes around me. First up one of the most beautiful bikes was a 1942 wla Harley with a dusting side car. This was a period piece not overdone but just as it should be, absolute beauty and it belonged to ex-member Tim Iso from Renmark. Talking of ex-members Andrew Biele had his a50 Royal Star bsa there and also Cedric Bradtkes 1975 Honda Goldwing, the original cruiser, Cedric's lad Relic bought this back to life and it was good to see. Greg Mills had a lovely 1950's Triumph Bobber and a special thanks go to him for organising the day. Jason Tucker rode his 1942 wla Harley and Phil Edmonds rode his beautiful 1984 Ducati darmah. As for rvccc members Robert Dempsy rode his 1950's Triumph t100 rigit, Mark Ned Kelly bought his ever-reliable 1971 Triumph, Ian Vallis had two jap speedway bikes of which he used to race and I am reliably told he will do so again in the near future, Greg Pilgrim didn't let the side down bringing his 1988 Honda rc30 and a 1974 Honda 750cr Rickman, lovely stuff. Bruse Mcfarlane rode his 1960 Nordon which drew a lot of attention and Mark Chowin on his cool sounding vespa scooter. From the number of people looking at the bikes, asking the owners questions about there bikes and taking photos and videos we sure received a lot of attention. All in all, I for one was pretty proud of what we did with our display, well done to all those involved. Regards scooter

    aka David Schubert.
