Why do asparagus make my pee smell?And is there anything else that will do that, too?
The answer is simple: asparagusic acid.
This lovely sulfur-containing chemical is only found in our favorite spring vegetable: asparagus.
Asparagusic Acid is not volatile.
A molecule that is volatile means it has a low enough boiling point to vaporize and be in a gaseous state at room temperature. That’s why asparagus don’t smell.
So, when you pee it stinks.
Asparagusic acid is converted to volatile compounds in our body.
It can smell as soon as 15 minutes after eating the asparagus.
The scent has been known for centuries.
