WHY CHOOSE INNOVATIONS ACADEMY?
• Innovations Academy provides an excellent alternative to the traditional
school environment, offering a flexible, personalized, online Kindergarten
through 8th Grade education for students.
• The dynamic and pedagogically sound curriculum is rigorous, and has
expectations based on grade level state standards designed to empower
students to build proficiency, achieve content mastery, and engage in rich and
challenging real world applications.
• Highly qualified teachers provide one-on-one instruction and support, and all
students are provided with Chromebooks and portable Wifi devices.
INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE PROGRAMS
• Edgenuity - Kindergarten - 2nd Grades
• Students develop literacy and learning habits.
• Students advance from learning to read to reading to learn.
• Students receive instruction, guidance, and support to close early gaps and
master foundational skills in reading, math, and learning.
INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE PROGRAMS
• Odysseyware - 3rd - 8th Grades
• Utilizes the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, emphasizing the development
of logical learning paths that initially present learners with big-picture concepts and
rich background knowledge. The model is then designed to systemically drill down to
more granular, essential, and supporting standards, with generous opportunities for
practice, deeper learning, and proof of mastery.
INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE PROGRAMS
• The curriculum is flexible in meeting the needs of all learners
including struggling students, students in special education, English Language
Learners, and students needing remediation or enrichment.
• Embedded formative and summative assessments, scaffolded supports, and a
balance of instructionally appropriate text and media elements, such as
video, provide students with multimodal instruction to address diverse learning
styles. Each video also includes a transcript that can be translated into 23
different languages.
• The curriculum fosters ongoing collaboration between students and teachers,
enabling students to progress and practice at their own pace and receive
support and guided instruction as needed. Teachers can also customize
content to address specific learning goals and adjust instruction.
INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE PROGRAMS
SPECIAL EDUCATION
• Additional supports for SPED students include the ability for teachers to personalize the weights and
thresholds for each of the courses, aligning to the specific needs and IEPs for individual students. Teachers
can also determine levels of mastery, number of attempts, and whether they want students to “unlock”
quizzes or tests based on student performance.
• Direct Instruction Videos: provide step-by-step guidance to assist students in the conceptual
understanding of key skills, impart background knowledge, place concepts into real-world context, and
allow students to learn at their own pace.
• Vocabulary/Reference: definitions and correct pronunciation of key academic vocabulary are provided.
Students can look up background information and context about any words or phrases.
• Text-to-Speech Audio Supports: six different voice readers are available at six fluency rates.
Students can follow along with automated highlighting and tracking of words as they are read.
• Video Transcript: a text transcript is available for embedded instructional videos, which can be
translated using the Translation Tool.
INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE PROGRAMS
ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS
• The program provides language acquisition supports that give ELL students opportunities to
listen, speak, read, and write in each content area with unique scaffolds to support social and
academic language development, such as text-to-speech audio support, translation into 23
different languages, and vocabulary and reference support.
• Text and audio translations are available through the translate tool; students who are
newcomers or are not literate in their native languages have access to translations in 23
languages and the audio scaffolding they need to comprehend the content.
• Students are also supported by visual aids, which help ELLs understand meaning and make
connections. Content is also organized around a key concept, theme, or topic to create
structure in learning. Material is scaffolded to support students in accessing prior knowledge.
• The Writer is a tool to improve student writing by offering targeted feedback at key stages in
the writing process. This feedback encourages student practice and revision to achieve
writing success.
ODYSSEYWARE – HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Students are assigned to 4 courses at the
appropriate grade level.
• Each course generates lessons that are
spaced out over the time frame of the
semester.
• The student works on one lesson per day,
per subject.
• There are projects that can take multiple
days and are assigned with a due date to
reflect that. Often, multiple day projects
are in Science or Social Studies.
ODYSSEYWARE – STANDARDS-BASED LESSONS
• Lesson Objective is stated
• Vocabulary is listed with definitions
• Full lesson which can include a video; written lesson;
link to chapters to a book
• Students MUST read the lesson materials or watch
the videos to learn what they need in order to
answer the questions. Note taking is strongly
encouraged but they do have the ability to reread
or replay any lesson materials.
• Lessons are followed by questions and/or quizzes.
• Note* Top & bottom toolbars. Message/Help
WORKING AT HOME
❖ The parent or guardian facilitates the work at
home.
❖ It is expected that students are online each day,
completing one lesson in each subject area.
❖ Log in and out times are recorded as school
attendance and should average 5 hours per
day.
❖ All work is done in the Odysseyware Program.
Some upper grade lessons may require creating
Google Docs or Slides and uploading them to
the program.
CONNECTED TO SCHOOL
❖ Students submit their completed lessons, projects
& quizzes online.
❖ Student work is graded and monitored online by
teachers at IA.
❖ There is a HELP link at the bottom of each lesson
that should be used if additional help is needed
with a particular question or topic.
❖ Students & parents also have the ability to
message IA teachers through the program’s
message center or call them at IA for guidance.
Any home computer may be used
with Odysseyware. A chromebook
will be provided by PSD if needed.
TIME AT SCHOOL
❖ Once a week, students come in for a 3-hour
session. This is provided to: follow district
guidelines, have time for standardized testing,
give students an opportunity to get clarification
on assignments & help students in any areas of
need.
❖ If the student is sick, it is expected that the
parent/guardian call the school to verify the
absence.
❖ Students must follow the discipline code &
behavior guidelines of the school and school
district at all times.
ODYSSEYWARE – TRACKING PROGRESS
• At any time, you can track student progress
by going to the “Courses” tab.
• This tab will bring up a screen which shows:
➢ student’s current score
➢ student’s score to date
➢ student progress
➢ student pacing
CONTRACTBoth parent and student are asked to sign a contract when enrolling
in Innovations Academy. Among other things, the contract states:
Parents are responsible for supervising their students while they are
completing assigned work at home and for ensuring the submission of
all completed assignments.
If your students has a current IEP it will be addressed at enrollment
and then at a meeting 30 days after.
The following will trigger an evaluation of whether it’s in the best
interest of the student to remain in Innovation Academy:
❖ Missing 3 consecutive days (or 5 days total) of online
assignments in a period of 15 school days
❖ Missing 2 contact appointments with the teacher without valid
reasons in any 30 day period
❖ A participation rate of less than seventy percent (70%) in the
school’s online education management system (Odysseyware)
over a period of 4 weeks
