A Few Tips for Surviving Middle School

• Stay in contact• Stay on top of

grades• Monitor tech• Vary friendships• Allow natural

consequences

Standards Based Grading

Why Standards Based Grading?

1. It gives grades meaning - specific to a standard.

2. It puts the focus on feedback3. It helps teachers better adjust instruction and

meet specific needs.4. It provides teachers, students, and parents a

snapshot of what students actually know.5. It builds growth mindset and grit in students and

staff.6. It leads to stronger assessments and curriculum. 7. It provides opportunity for reassessment with

hard work.

Why Social Media is not fit for tweens:

You can teach tweens responsible tech use but cannot

teach the maturity it requires.

Social media is entertainment.

Tweens think more is better

Reduces face to face time with family and friends and lose

connections

How to Slow Tweens down:

Delay Access

Follow their accounts

Create family accounts

Allow social media on large screens only

Watch how much time they are on social media

Plan face to face time with their friends

PLAN FAMILY TIME

The Jessamine County Student Code of Conduct states that the unauthorized use of any type of telecommunication device or similar electronic device by a student on school grounds during instructional time is prohibited. At West Jessamine Middle School,

students are not allowed to use their cell phones at any time during the school day, which begins at 8:30 AM and ends at 3:40 PM. If a cell phone is seen or heard by a teacher

during the school day, the following procedures will be followed:

First offense: The phone will be confiscated by the teacher or staff member who hears or sees the phone and will be given to an administrator. A parent must pick the phone up

from school. When the parent picks the phone up, he or she will sign a statement that indicates that if the phone is confiscated again, the parent must pay an administrative fee

of $10 before the phone is returned.

Any additional offense: The phone will be confiscated by the teacher or staff member who hears or sees the phone and will be given to an administrator. A parent must pick the phone up from school. When the parent picks the phone up, he or she must pay an

administrative fee of $10. The phone will be returned to the parent only upon the payment of the administrative fee.

Teachers and administrators may grant permission for a student to use his/her cell phone during the school day under special circumstances.
