Dear Friends,

Passover reminds us that the ancestors of the Jewish people were once slaves in the land of Egypt. They fled their dangerous homeland, wandering homeless in the desert for 40 years as refugees.

Today, there are 65 million refugees and displaced persons worldwide – the majority women and children. Like those ancient Hebrews, they have been rendered homeless by mass atrocities in their countries, forced to risk their lives to seek safety. Many are starving due to man-made famine and lack of aid.

How were the biblical refugees different from today’s? They had Moses, a singular leader who stood up to injustice. When Moses saw the mistreatment of the Hebrew slaves, he set his life onto an irreversible path to confront Pharaoh. Moses could not look away.

Who will be Moses for today’s 65 million? We must all be Moses. Each one of us must act on behalf of today’s refugees and displaced persons and fight for their right to live in safety and peace. You can stand up to injustice, like Moses.

On our website, at jww.org/passover, you can find many resources to download for the Passover Seder. They can help you pose new questions at your table and inspire you to pursue justice throughout the year.

This Passover, please also make a contribution to Jewish World Watch and join our effort to educate, advocate and support projects that build resilience in conflict-affected areas.

On behalf of the Board and Staff of Jewish World Watch, we wish you a thoughtful and fulfilling Passover.

Susan Freudenheim, Executive Director
