In many cases I have had to pull out old files to determine just who the persons shown are. What it has highlighted is how easily we lose track of information if it is not recorded and shared. This was brought home recently when I received an email from Reni Wiggins. We had been exchanging information on her part of the Whitlock family and she had sent a complete GEDCOM file of all her records. Her email was a cry for help - she had just lost everything when her hard drive crashed!! Several years of data entry were gone. No back-up copy! Needless to say she was very relieved and I could turn around and email back to her the complete collection that she had sent for recording in our files, with updates. The lesson is clear - back-up, back-up back-up and share, share, share. The more of your research that is “out there” the safer it all is and the Whitlock Association files is the ideal place to deposit a copy. Trying to “practice what I preach”, I have been adding more and more of our records to the web site in South Africa. Not only is all that information then available to others, it also protects our records by having an off site copy. The male Marriage Register and the Birth Register to 1819 are now available through the web site. The Birth Register will be updated from time to time as more years are transferred from file cards to the computer. The register is still only complete to 1819 but I am currently working on 1848 but it is slow work. Since the advent of electronic transfer of data many persons have sent GEDCOM files and in some cases there are several different copies of these records in our files for the same family. In most cases I have been through the files and extracted the details but have never had the time or understanding to merge these files. These files are available and should anyone be interested in receiving a GEDCOM file relating to their family they are available for the asking. Ideally they would be merged and a final complete copy sent back for safekeeping. If you are interested in knowing if GEDCOM files exist for your family, email me. I also have lost files in the past. Such an occurrence was one of the large census files. The file had become corrupted and I did not notice it until several back-ups had been done and there was no longer an uncorrupted file on the back-up disks. I have since broken most of the census files down into smaller ones, usually by state, province or county. The area still be to done is Britain and this is where the missing information is from. I have not yet been able to go back and determine what census records are missing but suspect they are mainly a section of the British records for counties “s-z”. I will split these records next and recreate the missing records using the census index list. In the meantime I will continue to work on making more of the census records available. Our census collection is becoming comprehensive enough that it is now the first place I look to try and find a person. Much of the miscellaneous information that Chuck Rockett finds on the Internet or Patrick Lynch finds on eBay can be connected to a family by checking the census records for the date and place involved. I recently figured out who the Whitlock was who founded the Whitlock Jewelry Store in Eufaula, Alabama in the 1860's by finding John Henry Whitlock, Jeweler on the 1870 Alabama census. His store is still there and is a major attraction in the area. I intend to write to the store to see what they know about the origins of their founder. Jeanne Waters Strong shows this family in her book Knox-Martin-Whitlock Families page 88. John Henry Whitlock shows as the son of John Gilbert & Mary (Sanford) Whitlock of Vermont but on the 1880 census John show his parents were born in New York so I will need to clarify this information. Our goal with the Census collection is to cover the period 1790-1930 with every available census record for Whitlocks. Please check out the American and Canadian census files on the web site and if you have census information not yet in our files I would be pleased to add it. The two largest census records not yet entered into the computer are the 1900 US census and the 1881 British Census. The later is available on disk so is very easy to use. The US1900 was donated some years ago by Chuck Rockett. It is hand written but sorted by state so is also very useable.

Over the past months I have been working my way through our photograph collection, cataloguing andcross-referencing each item and preparing them to be listed in the Newsletter. In many cases I have had topull out old files to determine just who the persons shown are. What it has highlighted is how easily we losetrack of information if it is not recorded and shared.

This was brought home recently when I received an email from Reni Wiggins. We had been exchanginginformation on her part of the Whitlock family and she had sent a complete GEDCOM file of all her records. Her email was a cry for help - she had just lost everything when her hard drive crashed!! Several years ofdata entry were gone. No back-up copy! Needless to say she was very relieved and I could turn around andemail back to her the complete collection that she had sent for recording in our files, with updates. Thelesson is clear - back-up, back-up back-up and share, share, share. The more of your research that is “outthere” the safer it all is and the Whitlock Association files is the ideal place to deposit a copy.

Trying to “practice what I preach”, I have been adding more and more of our records to the web site inSouth Africa. Not only is all that information then available to others, it also protects our records by havingan off site copy. The male Marriage Register and the Birth Register to 1819 are now available through theweb site. The Birth Register will be updated from time to time as more years are transferred from file cardsto the computer. The register is still only complete to 1819 but I am currently working on 1848 but it is slowwork.

I also have lost files in the past. Such an occurrence was one of the large census files. I will split these records next andrecreate the missing records using the census index list. In the meantime I will continue to work on makingmore of the census records available.

Our census collection is becoming comprehensive enough that it is now the first place I look to try and find aperson. Much of the miscellaneous information that Chuck Rockett finds on the Internet or Patrick Lynchfinds on eBay can be connected to a family by checking the census records for the date and place involved. Vol.23 No.3Sep 2004Page 2

I did manage to bring the mail up to date over the summer and the additions lists in this issue do reflect this.Lawrence Otis’s Ontario archives records continue to yield treasures. Those researchers working on theWHITLOCK27 family will be interested to learn that one of the Ontario Birth Registrations X5255 sent inby Lawrence included a entry for an extra child not shown on the chart. Emma Whitelock born July 3,1871daughter of John Whitelock & Eliza Pickering does not show in the family files. Vicki McKinnnon’sGEDCOM file X5259 adds great new detail to the WHITLOCK27 chart and also provides some speculationon how some of earlier generations may have connected to one of the older Yorkshire families. I use theword “speculation” here as my records show the likely connection in a different way.

Lawrence’s matching of ship records, showing where they sunk and how, with Commonwealth War GravesCommission records R2408 gives interesting insight into many of the Whitlock war casualties at sea byshowing exactly where the ship was when it was sunk.

Arthur Whitlock Cole’s work on the Whitlocks of Connecticut is the subject of an article in this issue. Theemails from Sue Resinger X5260 regarding the Ste Genevieve Herald newspapers from the 1880's give greatdetails about the day to day life of the day. Sue is one of a growing number of volunteers who take oldrecords and enter them onto the Internet for anyone to access. Many of the items Chuck Rockett sends in aregleaned from the work of these volunteers.

The letter from Gerald Whitlock X5289 chronicles his family’s arrival in Texas from Wilson Co., Tennesseeand their involvement with the oil industry from the 1930's to the oil crisis of the 1970's. I have a framedglass gas pump “WHITLOCK” name plate from a Texas Whitlock gas station hanging in my study so wasvery interested to learn the origins of this part of the family.

One of Patrick Lynch’s recent finds on eBay is a small publication (R2413) of the 1967 Stenton Lecture atthe University of Reading by Dorothy Whitelock, CBE, FBA. At the time Dorothy was the Elrington andBosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon in the University of Cambridge. The lecture addressed the issue ofwhether the Welshman Asser’s Life of King Alfred was real or a forgery. Dorothy concludes her lecture asfollows: “I hold then that Asser’s Life of King Alfred is simply what it claims to be, and I do not think I amalone in holding this opinion, which is one that Sir Frank Stenton never relinquished. Asser used a fewwritten sources, but wrote largely from personal knowledge and from what he learned from hiscontemporaries, including King Alfred. He gives us a lot of valuable information. However, if people wishto regard it as the work of a forger, written for some unknown purpose, they must allow that forger access toan amazing number of sources for ninth-century history up to 893, including many which have not comedown to us. In that case, the work would still not be valueless to an historian. Its author must have been atalented research-worker.”

I also have a copy of Dorothy Whitelock’s The Beginnings of English Society and The Norman Conquest (byWhitelock, Douglas, Lemmon & Barlow). I am hoping to one day find a copies of Anglo Saxon Wills andThe Anglo-Saxon Chronicle: A Revised Translation that Dorothy published in the 1960's. Miss Whitelockand I corresponded for some years in the 1970's. Her family is detailed on our WHITLOCK70 chart. TheWhitelocks of Wensleydale, Yorkshire

As you can see the range of subjects touched by Whitlock research is a wide one. I hope you enjoy thearticles contained in this issue.

SPY HOUSE, MONMOUTH CO., NJIn the Independent August 20, 2003 the Middletown, NJ Administrator clarified the future of theSeabrook/Whitlock House or Spy House.

“The following information is provided to clear up any confusion spawned by a recent letter published in theIndependent titled “Resident says historic Spy House should be restored”. The letter inaccurately suggestedthat Middletown Township is responsible for restoration and maintenance of the Seabrook/Whitlock House, aka the Spy House.

“In fact, the Spy House is now part of the Monmouth County Bayshore Waterfront Park, a 145-acre park inPort Monmouth that offers recreational access to the shoreline. The park was assembled by the countythrough the acquisition of multiple Bayshore properties, including the Spy House, marina, and sections ofwetlands and beachfront. Monmouth County took responsibility for the Spy House from Middletown in1997 and added it to the Waterfront Park, along with the fishing pier, observation deck, public restrooms, and surrounding 11 acres.

“As for the restoration of the house, it should be noted that an article published in the Independent the sameweek explains Monmouth County has received a $574,378 grant from the New Jersey State Historical Trustto work on the house. Information provided by the governor’s office states that the grant will be used forexterior restoration and interior improvements.

“Since July 19,1998, the contents of the Spy House have been on display for public viewing at the Moses D.Heath Farm at 219 Harmony Road. The township worked with Spy House Museum supporters - who hadpreviously worked with Gertrude Neidlinger - to bring the collection to the farm, which Walter and SusieSpradley offer to the community as a historical and educational resource.

“For more information on the Bayshore Waterfront Park, visit the Monmouth County website atwww.visitmonmouth.com/parks. To learn about the Moses D. Heath Farm and its many exhibits, visit itswebsite at www.heathfarm.tripod.com/peacelane.

---------Our thanks to William Melvin Whitlock for the above information on the Spy House. Chuck Rockett alsosent in the following on the Spy House.

“Port Monmouth is situated on the Lower New York Bay. During the American Revolution, a British Navalofficer named the Whitlock - Seabrook - Wilson Homestead, the Spy House. Because the British Navyasserted that the house was being utilized to spy on their ships. When in all actuality the spying was beingaccomplished from Garrett’s Hill by John Stillwell which was located a short distance away from the house. The British in an endeavor to stop the spying attempted to burn the house down but the attempt failed.

“The house itself began from a one room cabin in 1648 and was added on to throughout the years.Sometime in 1677 the middle section was added, which was the widow Seabrooks home in 1703. DanielSeabrook extended his home to his mother’s across the lawn after the death of Thomas Whitlock. The homestayed in the Seabrook family for 250 years. The home is now the Spy House Museum which presents thehistory and heritage of the Bay Shore. But the Spy House has its shadowy side also. It is said to be one ofthe most haunted places in America.

“An alleged female apparition dressed in white comes down the stairs from the attic. She then walks into therooms known and the Blue and White rooms, located on the second floor. She then leans over the crib andstraightens something in the crib, it is alleged a quilt.

“The apparition then turns away and fades into this air. In 1975 as a group was touring the house while inthe same room, the sewing maching popped open and the machine started to operate on its own withoutanyone using the foot treadle. In the front vestibule on the first floor an apparition of a man in a top hat witha full beard has alleged to have made an appearance many times over in the years. The Spy House is locatedat 119 Port Monmouth Road, Port Monmouth, New Jersey.”

JUDITH WHITLOCK, AUTHORThe following article appeared in The Singing Roads Part 2 by Hugh M. Anderson (1969?) and was sent inmy Joanne Kader of Mannum, South Australia. It is written by Judith Whitlock and tells her story ofbecoming an author.

“Living in an old castle, albeit a small converted wing, would strike some writers as ideal. In many ways itis. The blue-grey seas of the English Channel as they pound against the Kentish chalk cliffs providesplendid accompanying rhythm for the typewriter. At least it would seem so by the number of local writers. It was in our village that Frank Richards wrote his prolific Billy Bunter stories. Bachelor Richards has beenaccused of being too remote from his public, but he was spared the distractions of having a growingaudience in his own household. However much your own children may improve your ability to write forthem, they do not necessarily improve your ability to organise your time to include them and your writing.Your typewriter gathers dust as you march your infants down to the little cove, so evocative the location forsmugglers and of Buchan’s Thirty-Nine Steps, that your memory of Australian beaches recedes and itbecomes more difficult to describe the homeland you left in your youth to explore the world.

“The perspective of distance is not valid for children’s writers and certainly not for Leslie Green, my Englishillustrator, who created a likeable fat green Bunyip out of all the legends and descriptions I had gathered.Out hero was easy to depict, but his acolytes were another matter and we both haunted zoos and cuscusclung in rigid companionship to a papier mache gum tree. In desperation Leslie decided to emigrate, not insearch of Bunyip, but to see his environment for herself. The day her plane left, she married instead.

“Like many writers, my ambition dates back to childhood exercise books filled, in my case, with schoolgirladventure stories always set in England. My first job was the most interesting and valuable any children’swriter could hope to have - editing the Junior Red Cross Magazine in Melbourne. It was stories I wrotefor this which I was later to see to supplement my earnings as a journalist in London. One of thesewas about a Bunyip and, when Leslie Green arranged for me to see her publisher in Oxford, I went

armed with the idea of turning him into the hero of a series for small children. I has a pleasant lunchto show for my venture, during which my host did arithmetic on his paper napkin. He was interestedin arithmetic and has a manuscript which he knew would end up on school desks the length andbreadth of the country. He worked out what it would cost to put Bunyip into a book with colourexpensively supplied by Leslie Green. He then asked which I would choose to print - a book onarithmetic or on Bunyip. I said arithmetic and it too four more years to find a publisher to sayBunyip.

“Perhaps Bunyip lay on the same desks as the Oxford arithmetics, for the London County Councilprescribed The Green Bunyip and Bunyip at the Seaside as readers in their schools. They Bunyipmade a brief appearance on television and settled down to a career of literary respectability asuneventful as the lives of his creators.”

Judith Whitlock was obvious brought up in Australia and move to Britain and a young woman to bea journalist. I am not positive but think she is likely Judith Lorraine Whitlock, the daughter ofWilliam Alfred Norman & Marjorie Mary (Glass) Whitlock who where married at Swan Hill,Victoria, Australia in 1933. This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK05 chart. Her books aboutBunyip became popular children’s stories in Britain. If anyone has information about Judith, Iwould be pleased to add it to our files.

According to the internet “Australian aboriginal stories describe the bunyip as an evil spirit whichdwells in creeks, swamps, and billabongs. The bunyip's loud bellowing cry terrifies theaborigines.”

COLE/BARNUM/WHITLOCK IN BETHEL, CTIn his letter of May 18, 2004, Arthur Whitlock Cole details several Cole, Barnum and Whitlock connectionsin Bethel, Connecticut. It is a perfect example of how researching a collateral family, in this case the Colefamily, can provide the clues you were looking for for your Whitlock family. Arthur writes:

“Edith May Whitlock is my grandmother who married Orrin S. Barnum. George M. Cole was a nephew ofZalmon [Whitlock]. His parents were Hiram & Mary (Gilbert) Cole. Mary was sister to Eunice [Gilbertwho married Zalmon Whitlock in 1839]. George was part owner of the Cole & Ambler hat shop in Bethel[Ct] where Zalmon set up shop, even well into his retirement years. He started out in the hat trade as ayoung boy apprentice, worked in several of the small shops. It was during this early period as a young boythat he became acquainted with P.T. Barnum. By the middle 1800's, there were near a dozen large hat shopsin Bethel and is said that near every family had a “Hatter”. Young girls and women as Sarah Jane Whitlockwere mostly employed as “hat trimmers”. William F. Cole a brother to George married Theresa Whitlock, daughter of Ebenezer Whitlock (bro. of Zalmon). Another brother Andrew Cole married Sallie Adams, daughter of Bradley & Olive (Whitlock) Adams. Olive was an older sister to Zalmon. Another brotherHiram M. Cole served with Addison Myron Whitlock during the American Civil War. I have a photo of thetwo cousins in uniform. Addison was the father of Edith May and died in 1881. My mother was namedSally Adams Barnum after Sallie Adams Cole. As fate would have she too married a “Cole”, John RobertsCole son of George Edwin Cole. George was from nearby Putnam County, New York. Three sons here:Robert Barnum Cole, George Edwin Cole and myself Arthur Whitlock Cole.

“I’ll also mention that of Myron Cole Whitlock (1883-1933), who is buried in Bethel. He was acquaintedwith the family - son of William and Mary (Cole) Whitlock of nearby Brookfield.

“My grandfather, Orrin S. Barnum is in line from Elijah Barnum who married [1760] Hannah Whitlock, daughter of John & 1st wife Mary (Lee) Whitlock [married 1737].”

-------This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK09 chart, The Whitlocks of Connecticut. Arthur’s letterconnected several families together. We did not know that Zalmon, Ebenezer and Olive were all children ofEzekiel Whitlock (1777-1838). We look forward to hearing more about the Connecticut families fromArthur.

FREDERICK ALBERT HENRY WHITLOCK (1910-2004)At 94 Fred Whitlock was likely our oldest subscriber to the Whitlock Family Newsletter. He died at18 Cossack Green, Kingsland, Southampton June 5, 2004. His son, also Fred, advises he was“bright as button” right up to the time of his death and showed a keen interest in his long line of“turnip tuggers”.

“Fred senior spent most of his working life as a plumber and heating engineer working on his ownaccount having his own business which employed his three sons as one time, this was F.A. Whitlock& Sons. The company played a prominent part in introducing small bore central heating in the[Southampton] area during the late 1950's and early 1960's. He was noted in the plumbing trade forhis keen sense of humor and friendly helpful character. The Whitlock family (his line) have beenplumbing in the Southampton area for nearly 150 years providing five generations of plumbers sincemoving into the area after leaving Pitton, Wiltshire.”

As Fred Jr.notes above his family is one of the many lines that connect back to Pitton, Wiltshire. This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK34 chart that traces their descent from James Whitlockborn in the 1750's who married Hannah Mussell at St.Martins, Milford, Salisbury Oct.12,1780.

Fred Sr. was one of those wonderful links to past generations that it is always tough to lose. Whenyou consider that as a child he would have known persons born in the 1830's Fred helped many ofthose live on through his memory for so long. He will be missed.
