Principal’s Message

While Wekiva students and staff worked diligently on grade level standards, we also had some fun in March! It started with the Family Dinner, Art Show, and Book Fair. Then, the next day we had Checkers Day in third grade with their fantastic grandparents. The following week was Field Day. Students reported to me and others, “It was the best day ever!” After Spring Break, over 100 dads showed up for our Dad’s Day Breakfast, showing how much our Super Pops care. We ended the month with Trek for Tech. Last week, PTA hosted Family Movie Night in the park and over 300 people were in attendance. Thank you to everyone who volunteered or participated to help make school a happy place. April is now here and students are getting serious for the state assessments, but they will be keeping May in mind as teachers plan for more fun events. Exceptional Koalas! Our students in the fourth grade acceleration classes are heading to the Project Create competition and our Koala Kids were accepted to perform at Disney again. Supply packs are available to order online for next year. Look for information on our website.

Until next time, Ms. Adamczyk

Parent Reminders Early Dismissal and Transportation Changes must be made BEFORE 2:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and 1:30 on Wednesday. Staff and students have already made the dismissal arrangements, teachers are going over homework reminders, and it is very disruptive for the staff. This school policy is in writing in the front office and also in your student’s planners.

Second reminder: It is a law the parents cannot be on their cell phone in the car line.

2 NEW ITEMS FOR NEXT YEAR! DISTRICT WIDE!

Parents next year will not be able to eat inside the cafeteria. Only outdoor seating will be available. This is a district procedure that will be in place in all elementary schools. Outdoor lunch will be canceled if there are poor weather conditions. Parents who complete the emergency cards must place ALL family members on it. There will no longer be two cards for separated or divorced parents.

Community Kudos!!!!

Welcome Marco’s Pizza, another Wekiva Business Partner!

TREK FOR TECH TREK FOR TECH Fund-Raiser was on Friday, March 28, 2014.

This is the only fundraiser where we keep 100% of the donations. All proceeds from this walk-a-thon will be used to renew our annual online site licenses and to purchase Mimio Interactive Whiteboards for classrooms. The funds we raise this year are even more necessary due to cut-backs in our school funding during these tight economic times.

Please remember to turn in your pledges to your child’s teacher by

Friday, April 25th. If you have a business or know a business that would like to make a contribution to Trek for Tech, please contact, Karyn Cook, at 407-746-3151. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you for supporting technology at our school!

PTA News

PTA would like to thank all the families that came out to our 1st Movie Night in the Park! The evening was beautiful, and everyone had a wonderful time. We appreciate all the support throughout the year. Please remember to order your supply packs online. Look for information on our website and in your child’s backpack. The last general PTA meeting of the year will be held on May 13th at 7pm. The general membership will be electing the new PTA board for the 2014-2015 school year. Reflections participants will also be recognized. School Spring Concert to follow. Happy Spring!

Student Council News Student Council would like to thank all of the generous families that contributed to help raise our funds for the Thornbury family. We are still collecting Pop Tabs, so please turn them in! Next meeting: April 17th

Science News

Things have been busy in the Science Lab! We just finished Round #2 of our Super Scientist Lessons. Thanks to all who volunteered to come in and lead a lesson or assist in the lab! Your help is greatly appreciated. Fifth grade learned about heat transfer while making ice cream in "Ice Cream Rocks", fourth grade learned how animals and plants often resemble their parents through "M & M Genetics", third grade studied kinetic and potential energy in "Making Waves", second grade learned about variables in "Race Car Rally", first grade explored the power of air in "It's in the Bag", and finally kindergarten was surprised about what a magnet could do in "Marvelous Magnets".

Dismissal Procedures This is an important message for ALL parents and visitors. Wekiva Elementary has very specific procedures for the arrival and dismissal of close to 800 students. Procedures for arrival and dismissal are put in place for the safety of your children. Children who are designated car riders MUST be picked up following

our car line procedures. You must have a yellow card that is issued to you by the front office. Children who walk home should walk off campus. Parents CANNOT park or double-park and cross car line traffic to pick up students. Car/Bus Riders must remain in the car/bus line until picked up by an authorized vehicle. If you would like to “walk” your child off campus, they must be changed to a Walker prior to dismissal. If you are coming from the Sweetwater area, you CANNOT turn left on East Wekiva Trail on to Holderness. If you are coming from behind the school on Holderness you CANNOT turn right. If you park across the street, you will receive a ticket from the Seminole County Sheriff’s department. If you are late, you must come into the school to sign-in your child. They CANNOT be dropped off in the bus lane. If you need to pick up your child early you must do it before 2:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and 1:30 on Wednesday. We will not release students after this time. Please do not be angry at the staff for providing the safety and security of ALL Wekiva students. If you have a concern, please contact administration.

Fourth Grade News/Field Trip Fourth grade has been preparing all year for the FCAT. Teachers are confident that the students are ready to conquer the FCAT. Students will be going on their last field trip to the Student Museum in early May. Mrs. Castro and Mrs. Raby's classes will be going on Tuesday, May 6th, Mrs. Crenshaw and Mr. Power's classes

will go on Thursday, May 8th and Mrs. Raker and Mrs. Hewitt's classes will go on Friday, May 9th. Also, the "Growing Up" video will be shown on Monday, May 12th. There will be a parent preview the week before. Be on the lookout for permission slips for both the field trip and the film.

End of the Year Parties Room Moms will be contacting grade level parents regarding the parties.

1. Parents must sign in as a dividend

2. No younger siblings please 3. Please do not park on the car

ramp unless you plan to be in your car 10 minutes before the end of our school day.

4. Thanks for helping!
