Rhug is at the centre of an estate presided over by Robert Wynn, the 8th baron Lord Newborough. The Wynn family can be traced back to the 11th Century and has always been resident in Wales. Originally the main family home was at Glynllifon near Caernarfon and the estate extended from Colwyn Bay to Anglesey. Eventually the two estates of Rhug and Glynllifon came together by marriage but were subsequently very much reduced as a series of death duties took their toll. Glynllifon remained as the family home until sold in 1948 when Rhug then became the main residence.
The baronage was bestowed upon the family in 1760, for the defence of the western entrance to the Menai Straits against a possible French attack. At that time Belan Fort was constructed and a private army of 450 men was formed which, in 1845, was disbanded and became the Northern Division of the Welsh Fusiliers.
When the 7th Baron Lord Newborough returned from the Second World War he set about actively farming Rhug Farm, a relatively small part of the much larger tenanted estate. The farm and estate had suffered from neglect and under investment and he devoted his life to building up the farming enterprise and securing the estate that exists today.
On his death in 1998 his son Robert Wynn, now the present Lord Newborough (8th Baron) inherited the farm and estate. He became inspired by the belief that organic farming methods were the responsible way to safeguard the environment for future generations. The estate therefore embarked on a changing of farming practices that led to Soil Association organic certification being achieved in 2000; making Rhug one of the largest organic properties in Wales. This was driven by Lord Newborough’s conviction that what Rhug stands for is to meet the public need for “healthy food from healthy farming practices” and organic is the way to achieve this.
Taking forward the further pursuit of environmental stewardship, the Rhug Estate has been an active developer of clean energy projects. Installing wind, hydro and photovoltaic generation across the estate, together with ground and air source heat pumps. This means that energy from these resources meets the requirement of the estate plus an exportable surplus. It also powers the recently installed electric car recharging points.
Rhug Estate is the best example of sustainable farming, ensuring a better and healthier world for future generations.
Lord Newborough, Rhug Estate
