Dear Saint Peter Families,

Lent is the season of reflection and preparation before Easter. This is a time of sacrifice, penance, and prayers in preparation of the risen Lord. As a Catholic School we approach Easter with great anticipation. It serves as a reminder to renew our baptismal commitment and turn away from sin.

The second trimester will be ending just in time for Easter. Learning abounds in March! The teachers have planned many exciting lessons and projects to keep students learning and engaged.

Spring testing is about to begin. We will continue with NYS MATH (ELA (April 20 -April 22), MATH (May 4 – May 6), and SCIENCE (Grade 4 May 26, Grade 8 May 27, Written Grade 4 & 8 June 7) as planned and the administration dates will remain the same. Any students enrolled in the STADLP program that plan on taking these exams in person with us at the Academy please email me ([email protected]).

May this Lenten season allow you and your family to grow closer to God. Happy Easter!Ms. Danielle AlfeoPrincipal

ALL ABOUT ME

Saint Patrick Facts For KidsSaint Patrick (about 402 - March 17, probably 491 or 493) is the patron saint of Ireland. He was born in a village in Roman Britain. Saint Patrick came from a Christian family. He was the son of Calpornius, who was a deacon. According to the autobiographical Confessio of Patrick, when he was about sixteen years old, he was captured by Irish pirates. They took him from his home in Britain and sold him as a slave in Ireland. His work was to take care of animals. He lived there for six years and learned the local language. He then escaped and returned to his family.

After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland as a missionary. Because he knew the language he could preach to the people. He also married couples when the king prohibited it. He brought Christianity to Ireland. He converted many pagans to Christianity. He also challenged

many of their leaders and druids such as Aodhan the Brave also known as Chief Aodhan. St.Patrick eventually converted Chief Aodhan and they worked together to convert many other pagans.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated every year on March 17 in his honour.

This is a fun new version of the easy rosary craft that is shaped like a shamrock, making it perfect for when you learn about the Trinity and also an easy Catholic craft for St. Patrick’s day.

Supplies Needed For Shamrock Rosary: - Pipe cleaners- Pony beads - Scissors

Start by having your kids string 10 beads of their choice onto a pipe cleaner. (If you’re trying to conserve materials for a large number, half a pipe cleaner will work). This is super easy for everyone, especially small children, because pipe cleaners are stiff so the stringing is easy.

Bring the pipe cleaner around in a circle and twist it shut.

String on one more bead for the “Our Father”.

Cut off the extra piece and twist it around to make the cross. Trim with scissors where needed.

Resurrection rolls, which can also be called empty tomb rolls, are the perfect treat to teach your kids the true meaning of Easter! This is a great tradition to start with your kids.

Ingredients:– Canned Crescent Rolls– 3 Tbs of Butter– Small bowl of Cinnamon/Sugar Mixture (3 Tbs sugar + 1 Tbs cinnamon)– 8 Large Marshmallows (or the number of crescent rolls you have)– Parchment paper– Toothpicks (for dipping the marshmallows)

Before beginning, melt your butter, preheat your oven to 350°F. Also, cover your pan in parchment paper or aluminum foil.

Have them dip the marshmallow first in the melted butter, and roll it around. Then, roll it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Place the marshmallows on the crescent rolls, and wrap them up. Pinch all the seams shut as well as possible. They will look like dough balls when you’re finished.

Now, place your rolls in the oven.

Bake the rolls for 10 to 12 minutes until they are golden brown.

Create a printable book that tells the story of Holy Week for children. The story is adapted from the book of Matthew, and the story is illustrated by your child and his or her handprints.

Each handprint picture is designed to be loads of fun, and easy to replicate! Even the youngest of children can participate in a handprint craft, and the craft also becomes a keepsake to be treasured. Each of your children can create their own individual books, or your family can work together towards making one book to be enjoyed by all.

HOLY WEEK IN HANDPRINTS – A CRAFT FOR EVERY DAY OF HOLY WEEK

Technology is constantly evolving, and kids nowadays are born as citizens of the new digital world. So how do we prepare them for life in this world? Everything we do or use is based on code, and almost every job requires some form of computer literacy. Especially STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) jobs like computer programmers, data scientists, and software engineers to name a few. These rank among the highest paying jobs and there are a large number of vacancies for these positions because there are not enough graduates with the required skill set.

Programming skills also have personal benefits. They help develop creative and cognitive skills, improve memory and boost brain power and help develop problem solving skills that help relate to the world around us. So how do we get children interested in programming? We find out what they are interested in and follow their lead.

This semester 7th and 8th grade students have been working on app development using Code.org. Students were assigned the task of developing a shareable app relevant to them in App Lab. Code.org allows students to code using block code so they do not need to know a specific language like Javascript to be able to program their apps.

After a few weeks of following the instructional pages students were successful with their app development. The apps are complete and the students have presented them to the class. During presentations we looked at different difficulties students faced during the process and we did troubleshooting as a group. The students considered suggestions, made final tweaks and are proud to be able to say that they have created their very own shareable apps that can be viewed on your cell phone.

Samples of student work:1. The first app shown is a gaming app created by Christopher Ramirez in 8th grade. This app compares different characters to see if they are a good matchup for Sephiroth from the videogame Super Smash Bros. 2. The second app shown was created by Kayla Fu and Sofia Martinelli in 8th grade. By answering a few questions, a person is able to determine how up to date they are on current trends.3. The third App is called “Find It“ by Hayley Lee and AmyMarie Antuon. On this app you level up by hunting for hidden items.4. The fourth app was done by Bethany Ramos and Mikayla Parascondo in 7th grade. It is a Mental Health Check In app. As you go through the pages it asks a series of questions reminding you to be mindful of how you are feeling.

Hi! I’m Willow. I’m a 13 year old girl, who loves to sing and dance. Now you might be wondering “Willow why are you telling me this?” I’m telling you this info to get a feel of me because I’m about to tell you my story on the horrors of life. You’re also probably wondering “Is she talking about scary things like ghosts, creepy clowns, and monsters?” No. I am talking about real life things. I am talking about school. Being a teenage girl in middle school isn’t all that great. Here’s where my story begins… It was last period and I was sitting through boring math class. Now I hate math and I’m really bad at it. So this is kinda a waste of my time (just saying.) However, I was really excited to get out of math class. Why? Well because I finally got to go to theater class after school. Now theater class was after school

because not everyone has to attend it, which was good because not everyone appreciates theater. It’s also good because I won’t be around my other classmates. I get made fun of for liking to sing and dance. This has been going on since first grade and it’s not like I haven’t told someone about it. It just doesn’t stop. All of a sudden I heard a ringing sound. After a few seconds I realized it was the bell. I was free! I packed up all my things and ran out of that classroom. I walked up to my locker to see my best friend, Poppy, waiting for me with her trumpet.“Hey Poppy!” I said. “Hey Willow, you ready?” She asked. “Yup just have to get a few things” “Ok I’ll meet you in the gym,” she said and walked off.I was unpacking my backpack and getting what I need when all of a sudden I was pushed to the

floor. It was Adam. Adam has been bullying me since first grade with his minions, Jason and Blake. They hated me because I liked theater. No surprise there. “What’s up theater freak,” Adam said. I hate him. “Just leave me alone Adam,” I said clearly annoyed.“I don’t think so,” he said and grabbed my guitar. That was my prized possession. That was the last straw. I shot up and grabbed my guitar out of his hands. “Don’t touch my guitar.” I literally growled at him.He looked so scared and shocked at the same time. So did his minions. All of a sudden he just turned around and walked away and his minions followed him. I was so proud of myself. I finally stood up to my bully. Knowing that I did that, I skipped away happily to the gym.

The End. That’s my story. Now you’re probably asking “Why did you tell me this story?” I told this story to show you that I didn’t stop loving to sing and dance just because others didn’t like it. Another moral of this story is that there are gonna be a bunch of people out there who don’t like what you love and that’s okay. You also might get bullied. If so tell someone preferably an adult and to don’t give up hope and to stand up for yourself. I did and I feel much better.
