when parents divert their child's adhd...
TRANSCRIPT
DEARABBY: Regarding theletter from "Dumbstruck in theEast" (April 22), whose 9-year-old daughter has been getting"proposals of marriage" from achurch usher in his 70s. An oldman at church said things likethat to me when I was abouther age. He also was alwaystrying to hug me. It made meuncomfortable and I disliked it.My mother never thought twiceabout him hugging me. Yearslater, when I was an adult, Ilearned he was a pedophile.
Her parents should go di-rectly to the minister and lethim know what is going on. Ifthe parents decide to tell theusher his comment is not ap-preciated, they should say it'suncalled for and please stopmaking that type of remark. While his comment may beharmless, you never know forsure. -- ON THE SIDE OFCAUTION IN THE MIDWEST
DEAR CAUTION: Readershad various reactions to thatletter. Some echoed your senti-ments, while others felt differ-ently. Read on:
DEAR ABBY: I am from thesame generation as the churchusher. I was the little sisterwho was not as attractive asmy older sibling. (Boys eitherteased or ignored me.) I re-member several elderly mencomplimenting me in a similarfashion, and although I real-ized I could never date or mar-ry someone so much older, itlifted my self-esteem.
I believe the usher was justbeing kind. It would be horribleif he were reported to the pas-tor or embarrassed by a flip re-mark. If the parents want tostop his comments, they shouldgently suggest that "in today'sworld his kindness might bemisinterpreted." I don't thinkwe should teach children to bemean-spirited when this manspoke freely in front of the par-ents. -- JOAN IN KENTUCKY
DEAR ABBY: I had a differ-ent reply in mind for "Dumb-struck," whose young daughteris told by an elderly churchusher that he is going to "mar-ry" her when she grows up. Hermom could look at him and say,"I didn't realize you were OR-DAINED, but how kind of you
to offer to officiate!" -- ANONY-MOUS IN MICHIGAN
DEAR ABBY: That manneeds to be reported immedi-ately. When I was 8, a friend ofmy dad used to tell me all thetime he wanted to marry me.One day, when my parentsweren't home, he molested me.That little girl should be keptaway from the usher, even if itmeans not going to that church.-- LYNNE IN CALIFORNIA
DEAR ABBY: Next time thegreeter tries the betrothal ap-proach on the 9-year-old, herdad should chime in, "You'llhave to get past ME first!" It'sblunt, but it gets the messageacross and doesn't insult the
old guy. It's just Daddy protect-ing his baby girl. Done! --PRACTICAL IN MARYLAND

When parents divert theirchild's ADHD meds
In the 2015 Will Smith filmcalled "Diversion" in Frenchand "Focus" in English,Smith's conman character,Nicky, is diverted from hismain focus -- pulling off a suc-cessful con -- by his on-again-off-again romance with Mar-got Robbie's character, agrifter named Jess.
While diversions maymake for amusing plotlines, diverting medications awayfrom a youngster with ADHD-- when the meds are designedto help the child focus -- well, that's more rotten than al-most anything, especially ifyou're the child's parent!
For years docs havewarned teens about giving (orselling) their ADHD meds tofriends. A national survey in
2006-2007 showed that 6 per-cent of college students usedstimulants, such as Adderall,non-medically in the previousyear. But most docs neverthought parents might be di-verting their kid's ADHDmeds for themselves!
Now, a study in the Jour-nal of Child and AdolescentPsychopharmacology revealsthat 16 percent of parentswith kids on ADHD meds di-vert those meds to anotherhousehold member, most fre-quently themselves! And ifthe parent was diagnosedwith, or suspected of having,ADHD, that rose to 33 per-cent.
We almost don't knowwhere to start addressing theproblems this causes! First, a
child with ADHD must bemaintained on prescribedmedication without interrup-tion for it to be safe and effec-tive. Second, while diagnosingof ADHD in adulthood is com-plex, treatment can be effec-tive if you get your own med-ication, receive behavioraland cognitive therapy andmake sure to get daily aerobicactivity. Then, everyone willbe much happier.
