POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS

1st Sunday of Advent

Today’s Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (called the Synoptic Gospels), Jesus’ public ministry begins after his baptism by John the Baptist and after his retreat to the desert where he was tempted by the devil. When Jesus returns from the desert, he hears that John has been arrested.

The first part of today’s Gospel places Jesus’ ministry in the context of the writings of the prophet, Isaiah. Matthew wants to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies given to the people of Israel, and he refers to Isaiah to do so. Isaiah says that the Messiah will begin his ministry in Galilee, the land of the Gentiles. When Jesus begins to preach in Galilee, Matthew points to his ministry as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, proof that Jesus is the Messiah.

When Jesus called his first disciples, the Gospel tells us that the fishermen (Peter and Andrew, James and John) dropped everything to follow Jesus immediately. Yet this Gospel tells us little about the prior experience that the fishermen had of Jesus. Did they know him? Had they heard him preach? What kind of person must Jesus have been to invoke such a response? We can imagine that Jesus was a powerful presence to elicit a response as immediate and complete as these first disciples gave.

The Gospel concludes with a description of the ministry that Jesus begins in Galilee. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God with his work. He teaches in the synagogue and preaches the kingdom. His ability to cure people’s diseases and illness is a sign of the kingdom. In Jesus’ ministry, we already begin to see the Kingdom of God among us.

DIVINE MERCY MINUTE

Thank you for your time and service and we encourage many more volunteers to come forward so we can increase the maximum number we can safely accommodate at Mass!

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED:

Please remember that in order to increase the capacity of our Masses we NEED more volunteers. There is a detailed list of the volunteers required for each Mass inside the bulletin, along with the contact emails for each ministry. Please prayerfully and carefully discern if you are willing and able to help in any of these positions so that we may accommodate more parishioners at each Mass. There is no way to accommodate more than 50 people at each Mass with the current number of volunteers. We are grateful to everyone who has already offered their time and talents.

CHANGE IN PROCEDURE FOR REGISTERING FOR WEEKEND MASSES:

Parishioners are now being asked to register with a computer or device for weekend Masses on this site: www.pretix.eu/HolyFamilyParish/

For each weekend Mass, registration begins on Mondays at 9:00 am, and ends at midnight on Thursdays, or until a given Mass is full, whichever comes first.

If you are scheduled to serve at a given Mass, YOU AND YOUR FAMILY will automatically be registered and there will be no need for you to go online and secure a space.

There’s an old saying that says “Once a Catholic, always a Catholic.” Maybe you have been away from the Church for a little while, or for quite some time, but now you are feeling a tug at your heart calling you back to the Catholic Church. Heed that tug. It’s your Heavenly Father reaching his arms out to you, the Holy Spirit whispering in your ear, hoping to draw you home.

Can you play the piano, guitar or organ? Other instruments are also welcome! The keyboard accompaniment for our music resources needs either a grade 5 or 6 proficiency. Playing for Mass does require special skills and experience. This will include acknowledging the music ministry as having a servant-leadership role in the parish, knowing the liturgical cues, being able to accompany singers and improvise, and eventually knowing the musical, liturgical and pastoral judgement needed to select music for various celebrations. You will receive good mentoring! You can join an existing group or choir and apprentice with them, or you can be part of some new groups and choirs that are being formed. Please contact Marieta at [email protected] for more information.

WELCOME HOME

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

DID YOU KNOW?

or manifested to an audience.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church the Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with His baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.

An epiphany is thus a time when something is shown, displayed,

“Epiphany” means “manifestation”. It comes from Greek roots that mean “to show, to display” (phainein) and “on, to” (epi-).

1. What does the word “Epiphany” mean?

3. When is Epiphany celebrated?

2. What is the feast of the Epiphany about?

In some countries, Epiphany is a holy day of obligation. Where that is the case, it is celebrated on January 6th. In the United States and Canada, Epiphany is not a holy day of obligation, and its celebration is transferred to the first Sunday after January 1st.

This varies around the world.

The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs”, and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”) CCC 528.

- A regular commitment of time - for practice and for your group’s ministry schedule.

The requirements for being a singer at Masses in our parish are:

If you do have a trained voice, if you sang in a school or church choir when you were young, if you have ever thought about being part of the music ministry at Mass, or if you appreciate the importance of musical leadership for public worship and believe that those who sing pray twice, please become part of one of the three new music ministry groups or choirs we are now forming in our parish!

- The ability to carry a tune – you don’t have to have a trained voice, be able to read musical notation, or harmonize, although those abilities are a great help – but you do need to be able to sing on key and have a voice that can blend with others.

- The Archdiocesan requirements for all parish volunteers – the attendance to the Called to Protect 2.5 hour workshop and completing some forms (application, covenant of care) will be needed.

Singers are needed for new music ministry groups in our parish. Three musicians – an organist and two pianists – have responded to our urgent need for music ministry. Now we need singers to join them!

- An attitude of service (not performance) reverence and the ability to work as part of a group.

- help your parents cook and serve Easter dinner

Although this Holy Week and the Easter season look different, there are many ways we can celebrate at home:

- print off and use colouring sheets from links below to decorate your house

- continue to watch and participate in live stream services

https://beaheart.com/blogs/blog/holy-week-at-home-free-resource

In light of recent restrictions on our faith practices, here are some ideas or ways to continue your faith at home, while still respecting social distancing:

Continue your prayer life, first thing in the morning, mealtimes and before bed. All are easy ways to incorporate more prayer into your daily life.

Prayer:

TRIDUUM & EASTER SEASON PRACTICES

- fast from food, electronics and other things to focus on Jesus’ passion

Holy Thursday:- wash each other’s feet- drive by Churches for social distancing “adoration”

Good Friday:- observe a plain cross in your home

- start the Divine Mercy novena

- bake Easter bread- make an Easter centrepiece

- decorate Easter eggs

- watch a movie on the Passion of the Lord

Easter Sunday:- greet each other with “He is Risen, Alleluia!”

Holy Saturday:

- eat a meal as a family in formal clothing- listen to Alleluia and other appropriate Easter music- make an Easter door wreath, use plenty of white!

Octave of Easter (8 days including and following Easter Sunday):

- sing “Were You There?” and other traditional Good Friday hymns

- greet each other with “He is Risen, Alleluia!”- enjoy meat on Friday- listen to Alleluia and other appropriate Easter music- enjoy desserts- pray the Regina Caeli prayer

- have a simple meal

Please prayerfully discern continuing your donations especially during the Easter season. Thank you to all those who have continued to remember the parish in their donations.

MASS

~ Pope FrancisRome, Saint John Lateran, 25 April 2020, Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist

The month of May is here, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.

For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.

I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone.

Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE FAITHFUL FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2020

First Prayer

“Protectress of the Roman people” you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.We entrust ourselves to you, Heath of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Second Prayer

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

In the present tragic situation, when the world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

PRAYER SHAWLS

Talk together as a family about whether people outside of your family recognize common traits of your family. Are there physical resemblances that people recognize and so know each individual as a member of your family? Are there mannerisms that are shared by members of your family? What are some common interests and work that people might associate with your family? As you read today’s Gospel, John 14:1-12, keep in mind that members of the same family share many characteristics, even though each person in the family is an individual. What does Jesus tell His disciples about His relationship with the Father? The relationship between the Father and Jesus is so close that Jesus says that those who have seen and known Jesus have also seen and known the Father. Jesus promises His disciples that because of their faith in Him and in the Father, they too will be able to do the work of the Father as Jesus did. End your discussion by praying together that others will recognize in your family the work of the Father. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.

Members of the same family often bear close resemblances to one another. Sometimes physical resemblances are shared within a family, but often the similarities are behavioral characteristics and mannerisms. We hear this observation affirmed through a number of common phrases: “He’s a chip off the old block” or “She’s her mother’s daughter.” Today’s Gospel points to a mystery of faith that might be examined in light of these familial relationships. In Jesus we see and know the Father. Likewise, the Father is known through the life and work of the Son, Jesus.

SACRAMENTALPREPARATION

For the 21st of August of this year, the parish had planned several events to celebrate our 40th anniversary – the pandemic put a stop to these events. We have, however, much to be grateful for. The parish has grown considerably over the years and your contributions to the charitable needs of our community have increased as well. We can be very proud of all that has been accomplished over the years. I was recently told that the readers of T8N magazine have voted Holy Family Parish as the best place for worship in St. Albert for the last three years, and it is as a result for all the fine efforts of the various ministries involved in our celebration of the Eucharist. While we cannot celebrate this anniversary at a large parish gathering, we can still show our gratitude to God in various ways. Originally a number of special projects had been considered:An icon of the Holy FamilySupporting the Holy Family Parish in Ramallah in the Holy Land

A community celebration, inviting all of St Albert to share in our anniversary

40th Anniversary Celebration

A concerted effort to reduce our loan with the Archdiocese

The church is slowly increasing the capacity at mass, but we need many more volunteers in order to maximize our seating and prepare for Advent and the Christmas season. Please respond as best as you can – remember we are all called to serve our parish family, as Christ came to serve for the greater glory of God. May St. Sebastian, the patron saint protecting God’s people during times of pandemic, watch over us. May the Holy Family of Nazareth guard us and our loved ones. Thank you for all that you do for our parish community.May God bless us all.

A pilgrimage to the Holy Land

The pandemic has prevented some of these from going forward. The Icon, however, has arrived and is in place in the sanctuary. We can still support the Holy Family Parish in Ramallah by making contributions to CNEWA either through Canada Helps or on their website. Their need is great at present as the number of pilgrims to the Holy Land has been sufficiently reduced.

All activities that are permitted to be held in our parish facilities will require the tracing of the event name, date, time and location, together with the names and contact information of attendees. The list is to be submitted to the parish office for the purpose of contact tracing.

At this time, the use of churches, meeting rooms and halls in parishes should be limited to the following:

2. Essential parish group meetings that cannot be held virtually.3. Essential support groups that had been using the parish facility before the pandemic, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

1. Essential parish programs. in-person sessions may be held in parish facilities when deemed necessary.

3. Non-essential group activities.

All existing Archdiocesan policies on the use of parish facilities apply, and all Alberta Health Services’ health and safety measures are to be observed: symptoms and international travel screening, proper physical distancing, proper hand hygiene, the use of face masks when proper physical distancing is not possible and when required by municipal bylaws, and proper cleaning and disinfecting of facilities, furniture and equipment.

Due to COVID-19, the Archdiocese of Edmonton is advising parishes to temporarily lay off some employees to save on costs. I will miss everyone very much, and please know that I will be praying for you during this difficult time!

Who did God create you to be? How can you live your life for Christ in the midst of our current suffering? Turn to the saints. Turn to Holy Scripture. Turn to the promises that God made to those who follow Him. Things will not be easy, but the reward waiting for us is worth all of our earthly sufferings! Stay strong in your faith! Love God with all your heart, and set the world on fire!

There’s an old saying that says “Once a Catholic, always a Catholic.” Maybe you have been away from the Church for a little while, or for quite some time, but now you are feeling a tug at your heart calling you back to the Catholic Church. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE

DID YOU KNOW?

1. What does the word “Epiphany” mean?

“Epiphany” means “manifestation”. It comes from Greek roots that mean “to show, to display” (phainein) and “on, to” (epi-). An epiphany is thus a time when something is shown, displayed,

This varies around the world.

2. What is the feast of the Epiphany about?

or manifested to an audience.

3. When is Epiphany celebrated?

In some countries, Epiphany is a holy day of obligation. Where that is the case, it is celebrated on January 6th. In the United States and Canada, Epiphany is not a holy day of obligation, and its celebration is transferred to the first Sunday after January 1st.

The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs”, and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”) CCC 528.

Singers are needed for new music ministry groups in our parish. Three musicians – an organist and two pianists – have responded to our urgent need for music ministry. Now we need singers to join them!

- The ability to carry a tune – you don’t have to have a trained voice, be able to read musical notation, or harmonize, although those abilities are a great help – but you do need to be able to sing on key and have a voice that can blend with others.

The requirements for being a singer at Masses in our parish are:

- An attitude of service (not performance) reverence and the ability to work as part of a group.

- The Archdiocesan requirements for all parish volunteers – the attendance to the Called to Protect 2.5 hour workshop and completing some forms (application, covenant of care) will be needed.

- A regular commitment of time - for practice and for your group’s ministry schedule.

MASS

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

~ Pope Francis

Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.

Rome, Saint John Lateran, 25 April 2020, Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE FAITHFUL FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2020

We entrust ourselves to you, Heath of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

“Protectress of the Roman people” you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

First Prayer

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Second Prayer

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Amen.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Needed: construction paper (all colours), lined paper, pencils, pens, pencil crayons, markers, sharpeners, erasers, mixing bowls, thin cutting boards, scrubbers, J cloths, sewing machines, baby and toddler clothes, fur and leather pieces or coats, embroidery thread, yarn, thread, notions, sewing machine needles,

I would be happy to deliver wool and directions to your mailbox! Prayer shawls can bring comfort to anyone at this time, be it an illness, a bereavement, a new baby or just plain comfort, as every stitch is a prayer for the person who will be receiving the shawl. When done, they are available from our parish office and Fr. Jozef will kindly bless them. Please call Rachelle at587-290-0090.

Ladies, if you are bored with all of this isolation and “staying home”, how about knitting a prayer shawl?

We need volunteers urgently!!!

Supporting the Holy Family Parish in Ramallah in the Holy Land

The pandemic has prevented some of these from going forward. The Icon, however, has arrived and is in place in the sanctuary. We can still support the Holy Family Parish in Ramallah by making contributions to CNEWA either through Canada Helps or on their website. Their need is great at present as the number of pilgrims to the Holy Land has been sufficiently reduced.

A community celebration, inviting all of St Albert to share in our anniversary

We pray this novena daily from August 28th until September 5th. Let us pray...

Jozef Wroblewski, Pastor

Originally a number of special projects had been considered:

A concerted effort to reduce our loan with the Archdiocese

The church is slowly increasing the capacity at mass, but we need many more volunteers in order to maximize our seating and prepare for Advent and the Christmas season. Please respond as best as you can – remember we are all called to serve our parish family, as Christ came to serve for the greater glory of God. May St. Sebastian, the patron saint protecting God’s people during times of pandemic, watch over us. May the Holy Family of Nazareth guard us and our loved ones. Thank you for all that you do for our parish community.

Novena for a safe return to school

For each weekend Mass, registration begins on Mondays at 9:00 am, and ends at midnight on Thursdays, or until a given Mass is full, whichever comes first.

Upcoming Liturgical Celebrations

We want to encourage Pastors to discern ways to offer sacramental preparation this upcoming year. While the Archdiocese encourages parishes to run sacrament preparation programs remotely through the direct involvement of parents using our programs in their homes, in-person sessions may be held in parish facilities when deemed necessary as long as provincial and Archdiocesan regulations around COVID-19 are followed.

We realize that some Pastors want to start planning liturgical celebrations for Advent, Christmas and Lent. As a general rule, these celebrations should be planned with the assumption that COVID-19 will be with us for the coming year and, therefore, that current liturgical restrictions will be in place during these liturgical seasons. While we commend the generosity of Pastors who are willing to offer more liturgies than usual to accommodate more people during the upcoming liturgical seasons, we want to emphasize that your health is also a priority. Please consider making the best use of live-streamed options, as well as providing instructions to parishioners on ways they can actively participate in the liturgies from home.

1. All Alberta Health and government regulations continue to be observed.2. Parishioners are reminded that the dispensation of the faithful from the obligation to attend SUNDAY Mass remains in place until decreed otherwise by the Arch/Bishop.

Seniors’ Facilities, Care Homes and Catholic SchoolsLiturgies are allowed in these places as long as access protocols at each institution are followed, as well as all COVID-19 liturgical guidelines. The same applies to those bringing Holy Communion to individuals who reside in seniors’ facilities and care homes.
