Nine years ago, Terry Sroka and Reva Bily “decided to leave the large corporate world of decisions by committee, meeting after meeting and burdensome policies,” they said. The two founded West Point Rack, a Nebraska company that sells exclusively to material handling dealers. “West Point Rack is a smaller company with a highly dedicated staff. This allows us to ‘turn on a dime,’ respond quickly and to innovate whenever the opportunity presents itself,” said Sroka, chief executive officer. “I don’t want to be one of the biggest rack companies out there, just one of the better ones. Our primary goal is to support our dealers, satisfy their customers, earn trust and be the ‘Vendor of Choice’ for rack products and racking systems.”

Company president Bily said if an end-user calls, they refer them to a dealer. “There is nothing wrong with selling direct to the end user, but you don’t do both,” Sroka said. “Draw the ‘line’ and stay on one side or the other. In order to build a good relationship with a dealer and to have him trust you, it is necessary that he really believes that you will not go around him and make the sale direct. Dealers are independent businesses that spend time and money to build up a customer base and the last thing they want to see is a manufacturer go around them and sell to one of their prospects who is shopping price.”

Bily grew up on a farm and worked in a packing house and electrical sales before she joined the material handling industry. Customer service is the core of what she does, and the key to growth, she said. Customers want prices and delivery quickly.

She tries to get back to a customer with a standard quote in 15 minutes, she said.

The relationship with dealers is built on competitive prices, service and standing behind the product, Sroka said. “If product issues do arise, we address those issues immediately with the goal of creating satisfaction for both our dealer and their customer,” he said.

The company sells cantilever racks in light, intermediate, heavy and extra heavy duty configurations, structural pallet racks in galvanized or painted steel and portable stacking racks made to order.

“I always look for things when we do specials,” Sroka said. “Does it have any potential of becoming a standard product? That is how we developed a lot of our standard products.” Specialty products made by West Point Rack include bar cradle trucks, drum racks and handcarts.

West Point Rack has recently added new products to its line of racks. Included is a new line of reel racks, ranging in height from eight to 12 feet.

Vertical racks, which will hold material from 21 inches to 12 feet, feature six-inch deep arms with three shelves made of 14-guage steel. U-Racks, which come with an orange paint finish, can be stacked up to four units high to save space.

“The future looks very positive for West Point Rack,” Sroka said. “Our product base is expanding as is our market penetration. We will continue with the business model and plan that has taken us to this point and will continue to move us forward.”

They Pay You in Time Saved— Over and OverInsertable Plastic Label Holders, Magnetic Card Holders and Erasable Magnetic Tags offer a quick and easy means of changing a label. Simply re-mark the label and insert into the label holder to change a designation or location. This cost saving system has been around for decades accord-ing to Industry Leader Aigner Label Holder Corp., who pioneered the insertable feature in the 1520’s.

Organization is the First PriorityEvery efficient storage facility must know where everything is all the time. This would be much easier to accom-plish if products and locations did not change, but they do, and that’s when problems develop. Label Holders are a management tool that help solve these problems.

Cost Justification is EasyWhatever the initial investment is for a label holder system, it has been well documented that the pay back in materials, labor and overall efficiency, will be justified by;

• 50% Savings in Materials

• 65% Savings in Labor

• Easy Label Changes

• Prevention of Costly Mispicks

Protecting Bar Codes is an Absolute Must! Most storage and distribution facilities either use an automated bar coded inventory system or expect to in the near future. Bar codes must be protected from dirt and moisture to prevent an inaccurate scan. This, obviously, would create a major in-ventory discrepancy or possibly a lost customer. A clear, plastic label holder with a matte, non-glare, finish ensures scanning compatibility and protects the bar code.

Print Professional and Cost Effective Labels In-houseAdditional savings can be accom-plished by utilizing standard or op-tional pre-perforated, 8 1/2” x 11” Laser/Ink Jet Compatible Insert Sheets. These are supplied with sim-ple printing instructions in a standard word processing format and are avail-able for most label holder sizes from the manufacturer. Print neat and pro-

fessional labels well in advance or on an “as needed” basis at virtually no expense, in house.

A Label Holder for Every Application!Years of consumer demand for new product development have resulted in a wide selection of Label Holders - each designed to solve a specific labeling problem.

• Aisles–Insertable label holders mounted on the face of racks or shelving uprights and ceiling hung signs start the warehouse mapping process.

• Pallet Racks–3” x 5” or 4” x 6” side or top loading insertable label hold-ers, preferable bar code compatible like Aigner’s popular “Superscan,” design are the most popular choice.

• Wire Mesh Decking–If the waterfall limits your labeling capabilities, Aigner’s “Adapt-A-Strip” snaps on to the exposed #4 wire to quickly create a labeling solution.

• Wire Shelving–This application cer-tainly was the #1 labeling problem of the 1990’s but since solved Aign-er’s snap-on “Wire-Rac” label hold-ers. They install easily, have a clear window that protects the label and are bar code compatible.

• Steel Shelving & Flow Rack–The largest selection of styles, colors, and sizes available in a wide range of prices. No product has out per-formed Aigner’s original “Hol-Dex,” for this application. After more than fifty (50) year’s of market exposure “Hol-Dex,” remains Aigner’s most popular style.

• Retail shelving–Retailers change bar code labels and prices fre-quently and prefer a bottom load-ing design that also accommo-dated Point of Purchase messages. Aigner’s “Slip•Strip” label holder system was developed specifically for this application and is avail-able in a “clip-on” design for shelf channels or a self adhesive style for flat surfaces.

• Plastic Bins & Totes–Aigner’s “Bin•Buddy’s” label holder features a new space age adhesive system, which will permanently adhere to any plastic - a “New” solution to an age-old problem.

Backing Options Complete the Decision-Making ProcessLook for a time tested Self-Adhesive backing for the most permanent and lowest cost application. Keep in mind that the label holder’s insertable feature allows for easy label reloca-tion. Magnets, in a wide range of siz-es and strengths, increase the versa-tility of a label holder system, but at a higher cost than self-adhesive. Hook & Loop Fasteners such as “VELCRO®” are more aggressive than magnets, work well on non-metalic surfaces, but again significantly increase the cost. Finally, for any relatively high volume application a custom made snap-on extrusion may be the best solution.

Custom SizingCustom Sizing can be a major benefit to the end user. Why pay for a longer than necessary standard length when most label holders can be fabricated to the exact length required, at a significant savings in both materi-als and labor. The height (or width) dimensions are generally restricted to standard sizes due to the high cost of extrusion dies {tooling} along with high minimum run quantities. It makes a whole lot more sense to change the label size rather than to create a new holder.

Return on InvestmentThis is what it’s all about! At what point does your investment in label holders start to pay monetary returns? Calculate the total savings in time and materials and consider the contribution to productivity from an overall better working environ-ment. The results of case studies per-formed with major retailers confirm that the return on your initial invest-ment will occur within a twelve (12) month period.

Hamilton rolls out new Caster Series

Hamilton’s 7700 Caster Series is a new line of dual-wheel solid pneumatic casters designed to cushion loads while providing a carrying capacity up to 8400 lbs. per caster. The new series represents our highest rated caster series designed for heavy duty ground support and heavy manufactur-ing applications over rough surfaces. The dual-wheel design essentially doubles the load capacity of Hamilton’s single wheel 7500 Series. These dual wheel casters also provide greater stability due to their much wider stance. All models have drop forged steel mounting plates and CNC machined raceways.

Available in six wheel diameters from 10" x 4" to 21" x 6", all wheels are equipped with 1" or 1 1/4" precision tapered roller bearings making them well suited for power-towed applications.

The 16", 18", and 21" wheels are com-prised of three tread sections: a firm, stable rubber base compound for strong rim adhesion; a very resilient middle section to dampen the shock of uneven rolling surfaces; and a tough low rolling resistance tread to reduce energy consumption. The result is a soft ride that compares with full pneumatic tires, but with much higher capacities than their air-filled cousins. The 12" and 14" wheels are comprised of two tread sections. The same stable base found on the other wheels for strong rim adhesion combined with a tough abrasion resistant outer tread compound.

The new 7700 Caster Series can be optioned with permanently welded four position swivel lock and a heavy duty con-tact brake. The new series is backed by Hamilton’s industry-first three year product warranty.

Hamilton Caster designs new inline caster for aerospace supplier

What began as a simple inquiry for a wheel spawned into a new Hamilton innovation. The end result was a custom engineered all stainless inline caster for a major aerospace part supplier. The aero-space company ordered two of these special casters designed for a clean room environ-ment and each with an impressive carrying capacity of 15,500 lbs. The caster stands 10 1/8" tall and 21" long equipped with two 8" diameter by 2.2" double flanged track wheels. Four 40 millimeter double sealed precision stainless steel ball bearings were press fit into each wheel with 1-1/4" axles. The pivot block used axles 1-1/2" in diameter.

The application required the load remain completely level to compensate for floor irregularities. So unlike a conventional dual-wheel caster that features wheels side by side, this caster was designed with inline wheels that support each other with a pivot point in the center of the caster. So when the front caster encounters the irregularities in the floor, the back wheel would keep the load level.

Unlike industry-standard 303 or 304 stainless, Hamilton engineers selected ultra-durable, high-grade 316L stainless steel for all major components. 316L stainless has superior corrosion and pitting resistance and performs extremely well under continuous use. 316L stainless also contains less carbon than 303 or 304 stain-less that reduces contamination during the welding process.

Hamilton offers trailers for all job sizes

40-Ton Paper Rolls

Line up all the paper printed daily at one of the largest mills in the United States, and you’d cover roughly 4,000 miles. Roll it back up into individual 40-ton rolls, and you’d have Hamilton’s heaviest trailer haul.

The global supplier stretched us in more ways than one to move rolls of paper taller than a three-story building, and heavier than five elephants. At 33 feet, this isn’t just our highest-capacity trailer, it’s the longest we’ve ever built. Put that in ink.

30-Ton Chemistry Set

With a name like “Big Blue,” you know this four-wheel steer trailer totes serious mass. While 30-ton chemical molds might sound like quite the payload, it’s what’s un-der the truck that impresses – synchronized steering to maneuver through a maze-like factory floor.

20 Golden Tons

Open up a jewelry box, and you’ll find dustings of Hamilton. At a major mining operation, our fifth-wheel steer trailer hauls 20-ton vibrating screen machines. Each sifts through thousands of pounds of sed-iment each day to find rare minerals. You might say we’re worth our weight in gold.

Eric,

Just wanted to let you know that Shelving, Inc. has

completed their installation of our new Unirak

pallet racks (Phase I). They did a wonderful job and

your racks look great. (I attached a few pictures)

We have received many compliments on them

already and have passed on Unirak’s information and

Shelving, Inc. contact information to two friends.

Looking forward to future installations in our

Phase II and Phase III plans over the next few years.

A quick question – is your colors of blue and orange paint

available commercially in spray cans? We are thinking of

painting our rivet shelving blue and orange to have them

look similar to our racking.

Todd and I thank you again for you time and the tour last

year … it made the difference and the sale. If we can ever

help your business, even as a secondary source when you

might be in a jam, with steel strapping, shipping products,

protection products, etc., please never hesitate to call!

Best regards,

John A. Haapala
