Chocolate Fundraiser by Brandon Gate
Students Our students are working hard to sell the “World’s Finest
Chocolates” to help raise funds to offset the costs of trips,
presenters and other student activities. They are very
enthusiastic in their efforts as they aspire to receive one of the various
prizes including Gift Cards, a 5lb Chocolate Bar and much more! We
appreciate the support from our Brandon Gate parents as students sell
chocolates to their families and friends. To ensure student safety, please
ensure they sell to family and friends, no door-to-door sales, please. We are
confident that with your continued support this fundraiser will be a huge
success! We will be closing our sale on October 21 when we will be collecting
all unsold chocolates and the total outstanding money. Thank you for your
continued support in this endeavour.
OPEN HOUSE
Thank you to our many students and families that joined us
on Open House Night, September 28th at 6:00 p.m. It was an
opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teacher and
learn about students’ academic and social engagement at Brandon Gate. The
Peel District School Board and Brandon Gate Student Success goals for 2016
include…
High Expectations for Achievement
Parent, Community and Staff Engagement
Equity and Inclusion
Safe, Positive Healthy Climate/Well-Being
Raise Awareness for Child Abuse
Prevention in October
October 19th is GO PURPLE DAY! Did you know that October is Child
Abuse Prevention Month? Peel’s
Children’s Aid Society (CAS) works with
schools, health care providers, police and the
community to keep children safe.
CAS has invited parents, caregivers and families to
take part in GO PURPLE DAY to raise awareness of
this important month.
Computers for Families
As part of a partnership between the Peel
District School Board and Renewed Computer
Technology (RCT), qualified families with children
enrolled at our school have the opportunity to
purchase quality refurbished computers at a
reduced cost.
Desktop computers are available for $60 and laptop
computers are available for $150, including
software, a two-year hardware and labour depot
warranty, and delivery to the school. Parents and
legal guardians may apply for one computer per
student, with a limit of two per household.
If you are interested in applying, please call the
school by October 18th.
Terry Fox Walk/Run On September 30th we had our annual Terry Fox Walk/Run to
support cancer research. Our students collectively walked/jogged/
ran throughout the community. Students demonstrated their commitment to
help bring awareness to cancer research and the importance of being
physically fitness. Parents and students, thank you for your support in making
a difference and keeping Terry Fox’s dream alive. Together we raised
$438.00 to support the fight against cancer. Fantastic work, Gators!
What’s Happening in our School
Library! Welcome back to an exciting year ahead in the
library. The students were so excited to see our library’s
latest additions. We have purchased new shelving, tables and
bean bag chairs! The library is looking amazing and we hope
you have a chance to visit us at some point this year. We
encourage your child to use the library for reading, taking out
books, a quiet place to work and for research and inquiry.
Please remember to return all library books on a weekly basis
in order to take out new ones!
Looking Ahead... Malton Library Visits
Our annual visit to the Malton Library has been scheduled this
month for each class. This is a great opportunity to see what
our community library has to offer and to sign up for a library
card if you do not already have one.
Book Fair
Our first book fair will run from Thursday, November 17th
until Wednesday, November 23rd. All of the proceeds will go
towards supporting our library collection. More details to
follow.
Leadership Opportunities
This month over 20 Grade 5s have shown interest in becoming
a Library Leader. This is a great opportunity for our junior
students to take on a leadership role and support our school.
Drop in and Read
During the month of October, students will have the
opportunity to “drop in and read” their favourite book during
nutrition breaks. This will begin on Monday, October 3rd with
our grade 4 classes. Listen for the announcements to know
when it’s your grade’s day!

Peel schools will pay tribute to bus
drivers on Bus Driver Appreciation
Day on October 19th. The day will
be celebrated with special activities and events that provide
teachers, students and parents an opportunity to thank the
people who safely transport over 36,000 students to and from
school each day.
If your child rides the bus to school, take this opportunity to
thank the bus driver for his or her contribution and ask your
child to do so too. The Peel board appreciates the important
job bus drivers do each school day and October 19th provides
an opportunity to give these individuals the recognition they
deserve.

Highlighting Students’
Work
It’s Cool to have Character!
For the Month of September, students and staff at Brandon Gate focused on Punc-
tuality and Preparedness. Punctuality means to be consistently on time.
Preparedness means to arrive to school with all materials to be successful (e.g.,
lunches/snacks, agenda, homework completed, pencils, pencil crayons etc.)
Our October Assembly is all about Respect. Respect means to show consideration and appreciation for both yourself and others.

Report student absences
through new SafeArrival system
Beginning Sept. 6, 2016 in all Peel schools, all parents/
guardians need to report their children’s full-day
absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from
school via:
our new automated SafeArrival phone number at
1-855-209-6155...parents must call before
8:45 a.m. to report an absence.
Listen carefully to the phone prompts and
follow the instructions
online at pdsb.schoolconnects.com; or
by downloading the SafeArrival app for
Apple and Android devices.
Student absences will no longer be reported by calling the school number directly.
Tips for Being a Smart Trick-or-
Treater
Wear a properly fitted costume that is bright
and non-flammable. Use reflective tape on your costume so
you can be seen in the dark.
Use face makeup or enlarge the eyes on your mask so you can see
well. When wearing a mask, push it up on your head while walking.
Teach children to visit the front door of well-lit homes and never
go inside.
Help your child plan a route and a time to be home.
Remind children to always walk on the sidewalk, and obey traffic
and pedestrian signals.
Have an adult check treats at home before allowing
children to eat them. HAVE FUN!
Now It’s Your Turn: At Brandon Gate School, we are always interested in feedback from the community. You are invited to return this portion
of the newsletter with your comments whether they be expressions of praise or suggestions for improvement. Each month
we will do a random draw to award small prizes to a few of those who have returned this form.
