‘What matters to you?’ day Monday 6 June 2016

What is ‘What matters to you?’ Day?‘What matters to you?’ day started in Norway in 2014 with the aim of encouraging and supporting more meaningful conversations between people who provide health and social care and the people, families and carers who receive health and social care.

What’s involved? On or around Monday 6 June 2016 we are encouraging as many people as possible to have a ‘What matters to you?’ conversation with people they are supporting or caring for. You can have more than one conversation if you choose and you can keep having them beyond Monday 6 June too!

All we ask is once you have had the conversation you come back and tell us what happened.

Some of the things we are interested to learn about and share are:

• Who did you talk to?• How did it feel?• What happened?

Why are we doing this?We are doing this to join an international movement that is working to improve health and social care through gaining a better understanding of the things that are really important in people’s lives.

We know from experience and evidence that the effect of focusing on what really matters to people can lead to big improvements. Not only is this approach good for the people who are supported or cared for and their family and carers, but also for the people who provide that support and care.

Why is it important to ask ‘What matters to you?’The ‘What matters to you?’ question can be asked in many different ways. For example:

• “What are the things that are important to you at the moment?”• “What are some of the things you would you like to achieve as

a result of this support?”• “When you have a good day, what are the things that make it

good?”

This type of approach can help you in a number of ways. First and foremost it helps to establish a relationship, but it also helps you to understand the person in the context of their own life and the things that are most important to them. With this crucial insight you are in a much better position to work with the person to find the best way forward for them.

Here are a few examples of the sort of things people have told us matters.

When you have this type of conversation about the things that really matter to people it helps you to do your job more effectively and it helps the person to live the sort of life that is meaningful and fulfilling for them – it’s a win win!

“I like to receive the medication that manages my Alzheimer’s at the time I always take it at home rather than at drug rounds.”

“It’s really important to me that my granddaughter is involved in any discussions about my support. She’s the main person in my life!”

“Getting outside is really important to me. When I’m having a difficult day getting outside helps me to find space to think more clearly.”
