ADAM THOMAS Salon owner Adam’s first taste of hairdressing started at 13 when he started a Saturday job in a local salon. Attending Weston College from the age of 14 within a school link programme, Adam progressed up the levels from a full time level 2 programme to an apprenticeship. During his time at college he competed in many competitions often taking a top award and after finishing his training, he was fortunate enough to secure a role as a stylist before working himself up to a manager’s position. Taking a huge leap of faith, Weston Hair Studio was born. He is now rated 5 stars by the Good Salon Guide. The salon has competed over the last two years in Weston’s Top Model, which is an annual community show. This recent year taking first prize in front of a sell-out crowd. JESSICA HILL Junior Barbering Council Jess started her hairdressing journey at 16 on a level 2 ladies hairdressing course at her local college. While gaining two qualifications she also worked as a Saturday girl in a few salons before she turned to barbering instead. She then went to a different worker college and gained her level 3 qualification in men’s hair. When she started her first barbering job she learned more skills from her employer, who later encouraged her to apply for the junior hair council, where she is helping to encourage young hairdressers/barbers into education. Jess now works in a busy barbershop, doing freelance hairdressing and plans to have her own business, if not a chain in the near future. LYNDA WHITEHORN VTCT Apprenticeship Manager Lynda started as a Saturday girl worker in a salon and then started her official training at the Raymonds, a prestigious chain of 28 salons. She completed a three year apprenticeship and after two years as a junior, she became a Senior Stylist. When Lynda decided to start a family she decided to set up a salon from home so she could fit work around her family life. She was then offered the chance to manage a salon and then ran the training academy at Raymonds. From this she progressed into working in an FE College where she became Head of Hairdressing. Lynda’s next career move was to work for VTCT as a Technical Expert before becoming the full-time Qualification Development Officer for Hair at VTCT. Lynda is now the Apprenticeship Manager at VTCT and is charged with growing VTCT’s Apprenticeship offer.
