Rockies Hockey
The Columbia Valley Rockies regular sea-son kicks off with 3 home games beginning this Friday, September 9 at 7:30 pm at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena. They host the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, a division rival. The next evening, Saturday, September 10, the Fernie Ghostriders are in town and the Grand Forks Border Bruins will be here the following Friday. The Rockies won 2 games and lost 1 in the pre-season. They are ready for a fantastic season with lots of fan support and lots of great energy. Come on out and support local junior hockey. It is a great way to spend an eve-ning with family and friends.
Funny girl
Last week my wife and I were making plans. One evening when I got home from work I told her that I had changed my mind. “Finally,” she said. “Does it work better now?”
European Dinner
The Edgewater Legion hosts some incredi-
ble meals. The European Dinner, this Sun-day, September 11 is definitely one of the best meals you will find in the valley. Enjoy cabbage rolls, pirogues, bratwurst, stroganoff, borscht, Swedish meatballs, Harvard beets, peas, noodles, mashed potatoes, red cabbage, baguette bread and apple or plum platzl for dessert. The doors will open for cocktails at 5 pm and dinner will be served at 6pm. This event sells out every year so similar to last year, it is advance tickets only at a cost of $18/person. Check the ad on page 3 for ticket locations and contact information.
Live Auction
There is an antiques and collectibles auc-tion this Saturday, September 10 at 11 am at ‘The Rock Shop’ in Windermere. Contractor Costs
A man and his wife have been in their house for nearly a year. In that time they have had repairs done by electricians, roofers, carpenters, painters and more. It has been very costly. One day he comes home from work early to find a plumber’s van in his driveway. His first thought was “Please let her be having an affair.”
Final Farmers’ Market
Summer is pretty much done. The Labour Day weekend generally indicates the unof-ficial end of it all. But there is still one more Invermere Farm-ers’ and Artisans’ Market in downtown Invermere. It will be this Saturday, Sep-tember 10, from 9 am to 1 pm. This is an incredible market. There are so many different kiosks of different products that it is tough to fully appreciate them all. Food is abundant, whether picking up fresh produce, baking or meats for a meal at home or enjoying one of the many awe-some edibles available during the market. The skill of the artisans and crafts folks is also amazing. There are so many things to choose from. Get down there this weekend for a final fun shopping session.

Life brings many changes. I grew up in a small West Kootenay town (Castlegar) which is quite similar to Invermere. Lots of outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, swimming, boating, biking, golfing and more. But like most youth, I hated it. I couldn’t wait to get away to University and the big city. Crazy isn’t it? I did several years in Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary. Chasing the mighty dollar so I could experience the ‘exciting’ night life or go to a concert, hockey/football game, a fancy restaurant or whatever. Maybe I could even save enough to get out to visit friends in Inver-mere and do some camping, fishing, etc. Now here I am, back in paradise, inviting my poor (all they have is money and the desire for more) city friends to experience this place with me. I feel very rich (although money for stinking bills is always a concern) yet I survive on a fairly meager income. But I do have a fishing rod, bike, camping gear, golf clubs, hiking boots and more. I wake up in paradise every day, choosing how to get out there and enjoy myself. And so do most of you.
Taxman
The IRS agent stormed into the pizza par-lour and said, “I have your tax return right here. How can you possibly justify your travel expenses? Four trips to Europe?” The owner looked across the counter and calmly answered, “We deliver.”

Watson’s
Waddle
We animals can teach you hu-mans quite a few t h i n gs . O u r brains are so different from yours. One of the main
things that I notice is how we all treat each other. My humans are nuts, similar to many folks. They treat me like a king. They feed me, rub me, walk me and clean up after me without hardly any grumbling at all. They love me. Yet when they are dealing with each other it seems to be a completely different situa-tion. They are constantly frustrated and arguing, leaving me to wonder why I get treated so well. Matilda and I have been discussing it a bit. I guess it is because we don’t really care what or when you feed us. We rarely talk back and we are always visibly happy to see you. That seems to make the people a lot happier. So here is my suggestion to you folks out there. Show the people in your life that you love them as often as possible. Be genu-inely happy to see them and share a happy, positive experience. They depend on your love as much as your pets do.
What Year Was It?
Apple Computer Inc. released the Apple ll system, Jimmy Carter was elected as U.S. president and Fleetwood Mac released ‘Rumours’. The deadliest plane crash in history (two 747s and 583 people per-ished) happened in the Canary Islands, the first optical fibre was used for telephones and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline opened. What year was it? See page 9.
Body Language
You can tell a lot about a woman’s mood by the position of her hands. For example, if they are wrapped tightly around your neck, she is probably a bit frustrated with you.

This coming Monday, September 12, the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium is hosting an ‘Open Mic’ night between 7 and 9 pm. Larry Neuman and Marty Beingessner host a great mix of very talented musicians and singers for a couple hours of excellent entertainment. I can promise you that these evenings are a great time. There are a lot of very tal-ented people in the valley. The Horsethief Creek Pub is definitely a happening place, especially on Live Music Mondays.
Lucky Number
A woman was down to her last spin at the roulette table. “Why don’t you try playing your age?” said a handsome young man. “Good idea,” she said as she covered the number 26. She went completely pale and fainted when 33 came up.

Inside ICAN
Flapjack reporting from the ICAN Rescue and Adoption Facility. There are still quite a few of us kittens looking for homes. In fact we are still in need of foster parents too! If you are someone that has the space for us to play and explore, and the time to give us love but can’t commit to giving us a forever home consider fostering. Fostering is a huge help to ICAN and its residents, especially us kittens who need that extra attention. Be sure to stop by the ICAN booth this Saturday, September 10 at the Rock Shop Auction (1090 Swansea Road, Winder-mere) and treat yourself. All proceeds go directly to the care of ICAN animals. Visit our website www.icanbc.com or con-tact ICAN to lend a paw today 250-341-7888.

The Village of Radium Hot Springs will be a very busy place next weekend with the Classic Car Show & Shine. Part of the festivities is live music at Rockin on Main on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, September 16, Marty Beingess-ner and Friends will be performing from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. On Saturday, Dos Equis will play from 2 to 4 pm. Canadian Sports Trivia Answer
Viviane Forest is the first para-athlete to win gold medals in both the Winter and the Summer Paralympic Games. She won the Visually-impaired Women’s Downhill ski race in 2010 after winning gold in Goalball during both the 2000 and 2004 Summer games.

The Columbia Valley Centre
As our new Centre takes shape, everyone is watching the construction site. Each time you go past, something new is hap-pening. Excitement is growing as the pro-ject takes shape. The Fundraising Committee created many ways to contribute that fit all budgets and interests. The nature lovers will be inter-ested in Colour our Centre Green. Land-scaping the building by adding trees and shrubs will reduce the environmental im-pact of a large building. You can purchase a shrub for $100 or a tree for $250. Your name, or that of a loved one, will be on a plaque in a planted area. Go to www.columbiavalleycentre.ca to find more information on the different ways of contributing.

Roast Pork Loin Dinner
The Invermere Legion is offering up a roast pork loin dinner this Friday, Septem-ber 9. Dinner includes tender roast pork, veggies, potatoes, gravy, salad, dessert, coffee or tea and more. It is a great deal for $17.50. Take a chance at the 50/50 and meat draws while you are there. It is a great chance to win a package of premium meat for home barbecue.
It Was That Year
(From page 4) It was in 1977 that the To-ronto Blue Jays played their first game (against the Chicago White Sox) Star Wars was released, the Porsche 928 debuted and the first Stealth Aircraft flight took place.
Homes
The price of homes is ridiculous. Last week a man won a million dollars in a lot-tery. When asked what he would do with the money he replied, “I think I will put a down payment on a one –bedroom house. If there is anything left I will buy a bed to put in it.”
The Thrifty Reporter
The seasons are changing fast every-where. In August I was travelling in Alberta and noticed the leaves turning yellow. Then when I travelled back to the valley I noticed leaves turning color here as well. The Invermere Thrift Store is also switch-ing seasons and to suit the cooler tem-peratures, they are digging out the fall coats and sweaters. That means that in-stead of storing the summer items they would rather have a surprise sale to make room for new items. Watch the sidewalk sign for weekly sale announcements. The racks and shelves are stocked daily so stop to see what they have. The store hours are every Thursday, Friday and Sat-urday 10 am-4 pm.
Legion Golf Tourney
The Invermere Legion Golf Tournament is a mixed team scramble at ‘The Ridge’ at Copper Point on Saturday, September 17. Tee off is at 12:20 pm. The cost is only $65 which includes your golf, power cart, driving range, prizes and dinner back at the Legion. You must register by September 15 at the Legion, 250-342-9517.

Bereavement Support
The Hospice Society of the Columbia Val-ley knows about grief. They have put in a lot of time in understanding the processes we go through as part of a loss. They are starting up a Bereavement Sup-port Group this coming Monday, Septem-ber 12 at 6 pm. The group will run weekly through the fall and will help participants understand that sadness and stress are natural responses to loss. There are many aspects involved in be-reavement, grief and mourning and we all face them at some point. Call 250-688-1143 to find out more.
Where I Was
The photo on page 6 warms my heart. It shows a lineup of people at the Invermere Community Hall in July. But not just any people. Readers! It is from the BIG Book Sale which had an incredible turn out.
Small Town
I once lived in a very small community that had only two restaurants. It was tough. They were both so bad that no matter which one you went to, you were sorry you didn’t go to the other one.
Go-Go Garage Sale
The Valley Go-Go Sisters will be holding another ‘Tailgate Sale’ at the Windermere Fall Fair, Sunday, September 18, from 10 am to 3 pm. Come check out all the treas-ures from the grandmothers and grand others. New this year will be the ‘Cake Walk’ run-ning hourly beginning at 11 am. Get your ticket for a chance to win a special cake baked by one of their grandmothers.
Wild Game Processing
Hunting season is happening pretty quick here in the valley. We have a lot of crafty outdoorsmen and women who like to feed their families with wild meat. What should you do with a animal from a successful hunt? Where should you go? Konig Meat & Sausage Company in down-town Invermere is the place to go. They have years of experience as butchers and have been processing wild game ‘forever’. They will work with you to determine what cuts you want and help you choose sau-sage styles and more. Give them a call at 250-342-9661.

Great Food Deal
Have you tried out the ‘Good Food Co-op’? It is a program run by Family Dynamix that is open to everyone. You register by the second Wednesday of each month for only $6. The registration money is pooled for a bulk purchase of fresh fruit and vegetables. The produce is then shared equally amongst all the partici-pants on the third Wednesday of the month. You can find out more at Family Dynamix, 250-342-5566.
Headbanger Trail Challenge
The ninth annual Headbanger Trail Chal-lenge is coming up in Radium on Saturday, September 24, beginning at 11 am. Partici-pants are invited to run a 3, 5 or 10 km trail through some great scenery in the Radium area. There will be prizes for top males and fe-males in each distance category. There is also a post race BBQ, mini massages and live music by Sheberdean & the Postmis-tress.
Big Gulp
Did you hear about the guy who drank 8 cans of cola in an hour? He burped 7-up.
Paralympics
The Paralympics are about to begin in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Canada will be well-represented. This event is an incredible display of amaz-ing athletes that have worked very hard to get where they are. We will see some pretty cool sports. Canada has excelled at the Paralympics for years but the many other countries have been getting stronger through the years. This year will be very exciting. There will be 528 events in 23 sports in-cluding 2 new sports, canoeing and triath-lon. Hopefully we will see lots of it broad-cast on television.
Curling
Everyone enjoys throwing a stone, draw-ing, a good take-out and especially a raise. Those are all just some of the everyday pleasures that are incorporated into the game of curling. How about sweeping? Everyone loves that at home so of course we want to pick up
some of that recreationally haha. It is a lot of fun. Social, healthy, competitive and more. Come to the AGM on Thursday, October 6.
Power Smart
Are you in a position of ‘power’? Are you a manager or owner who supervises others? How do you approach your power? It is pretty important that you are respected by the folks that work for (with) you. How do you gain respect? By giving respect. Show your people that they have value for you. Everyone is important in this world of ours and it is critical that they know it. Be grateful and appreciative of everything and everyone and you will develop a great team.
Final Thought
Well, that’s about it for summer. Let’s hope for a hot and sunny September. Thanks for reading The Valley Peak.
