Page 1: What is Evaluation?

What does “Evaluation” mean?

1. To give something “value”

2. To weigh something up, or to estimate.

Evaluating in “media” terms:

The whole production process, from brief selection to the final realised piece, needs to have been

thoroughly evaluated.

This means that your ideas, decisions, changes and revisions, target audience feedback and personal

response is evaluated in every section of the production process. Research-planning-production-

post-production whilst all need to be evaluated, need also to be linked together to show how

everything had had an impact on each other; thus how you have created meaning for a specific

audience.

To evaluate means to look at both the positive and negative aspects of the production process, what

decisions you have made, why you made them ( relating to key concepts, construction of meaning,

media theory) and whether you think the decision is going to be effective, problems that may arise,

and what you will have to do.

Consider the terms above

Therefore, your blogs need to have clear sections of evaluation, and the better and more succinct

blogs, need to be totally an evaluation which includes what you have done in terms of research,

planning and the production process. Simply put, your style of writing is evaluation including the

details of what you have been doing and why.

To make your blog work for you, you should be able to clearly understand the evaluation of the

whole production. All the issues and concerns you had in trying to convey ideology to your target

audience, what things hindered you, and how you overcame them, a clear “reflection” on decisions

you made, and changes.
