What is CHENACT?

• CHENACT is a CHTA project financed by :• IDB, GTZ, CDE, UNEP, BL&P, Government

of Barbados, BHTA• It is implemented via CTO by CHTA/CAST• It runs April 2009 to December 2010.


Objective of CHENACT

To improve the competitiveness of small and medium sized hotels (<400 rooms) in the

Caribbean Region through improved use of energy with the emphasis on Renewable Energy

and Micro-Generation The Pilot project is in Barbados

The beneficiaries are CHTA member hotels

CHENACT Assistance to Hotels

• Detailed energy audits in 30 hotels in Barbados • Walk Throughs assessments in 35 hotels in

Barbados• Detailed audits in 18 hotels in the OECS• Detailed audits in 5 hotels in the Greater

Caribbean Region• ODS audits in all


Benefits to the Industry

• More efficient energy use in the Caribbean Hotel Sector

• Reduced energy costs to hotels • Increased competitiveness in the hotel sector

through lower Operating Costs• Increased use of Renewable Energies• Positive Environmental Impacts such as

reduction of GHG’s and ODS


Benefits to the Industry

• Positive Environmental footprint will attract more environmentally aware consumers, incl. Tour Operators, i.e. Virgin

• Additional revenue may be generated from the sale of carbon emission reduction credits for CHTA


Benefits to Participating Hotels• Comprehensive report on energy usage in

the hotel will be produced• Analysis of where energy (and Water) is

being used and where wastage is occurring• Recommendations on operational or

technological changes required to maximize efficiency

• Will complement or enhance Green certification process, ie Green Globe, ISO etc

• A communication strategy will market the project and the participants


Data to be supplied by hotels

A comprehensive pre-audit questionnaire including:

Utility usage for the last 2 years for Electrical Energy LPG / Natural Gas Diesel Fuel Water

Occupancy rates for the last 2 years by Guest Nights Room Nights Conference Attendance, if applicable

Major Benefit to 3 hotels3 hotels will be selected to participate in

Demonstration projects. Approximately $40,000 worth of RE equipment

will be installed in each of the selected hotelsThe hotels will be selected on the basis of the

results of the Energy Audits and with the assistance of the BL&P.

The first 20 hotels to sign up for the detailed energy audits will be the ones considered

Criteria for selection Be sufficiently interested to either match our investment or pay a portion of the cost of

the installation,Be willing to allow others to view the installation and promote itAlready have the technical capability to manage and maintain the installation or which

indicate a willingness to invest in the training of their staff to do so.Be willing to place the information and tracking system on their website for public

information.Have already proven efforts at improving energy and water efficiency Not undergoing extensive building works which would delay the implementation of the

Findings to dateAll hotels have water leaks, some could reduce their water

bills by 30-50% if they repaired leaks, One hotel reported a potential saving of > US$250,000

Maintenance is VERY POOR in general, electrical circuits overloaded, solar panels broken, tanks leaking, A/C condensers placed in soil and grass, roofs damaged – unsuitable for PV systems, roofs inaccessible, old kitchen and laundry equipment etc.

Most have solar water heating with either electrical or gas backup, but many do not work and in some cases the hotels are not aware that they do not work!!

ContinuedThe inspection of the SWH system indicates in many Hotels

shows the use of electrical backup elements in storage tanks and causes the storage tank to perform exactly like an electrical water heating system

Many of the hotels are reading meters but there is little analysis and little knowledge of baselines, benchmarks etc

Many have installed CFL’s but they didn't work – wrong specs etc, now reluctant to spend again!

Many appear to prefer to upgrade rooms rather than spend on “back of house issues”

Initial audit reports indicate significant opportunities for energy efficient savings in the hotel sector

Average potential electricity savings near 40% of total hotel’s consumption Most savings are related to:

1) Retrofit of present mini split unit systems to high efficient AC systems (such as inverter type variable refrigerant volume (VRV) system ) with heat recovery for supplying hot water also.

2) Installation of high efficient lighting systems. Average total paid back period around 2.5 years Total investment costs between US$200,000 and US$550,000 depending on property size
