Many nouns can be used as countable or uncountable nouns; usually with a difference in meaning.

COUNTABLE UNCOUNTABLE

Did you hear a noise just now? = a specific noise I can’t work here. There’s too much noise = in general

I bought a paper to read = a newspaper I need some paper to write on = material for writing on

There’s a hair in my soup = one single hair You’ve got very long hair = all the hair on your head

You can stay with us. There is a spare room = a room in a house

You can’t sit here. There isn’t room = space

I had some interesting experiences while I was travelling = specific things that happened to me.

They offered me the job because I had a lot of experience = in general

Enjoy your trip have a good time! = the specific time while you are away.

I can’t wait. I haven’t got time = in general

Two coffees and an orange juice, please. = two cups of coffee + a glass of orange juice

I don’t like coffee but I love orange juice. = normally uncountable and in general.

Compare these countable and uncountable nouns.

For irregular plurals, add ‘s

The coats of the women = the women’s coats

The jackets of the children = the children’s jackets

For names ending in –s, add ‘s or alternatively just add ‘ (s’)

The cat belonging to Charles = Charles’s cat

The cat belonging to Charles = Charles’ cat

The jacket of the Phyllis = Phyllis’s jackets

The jacket of the Phyllis = Phyllis’ jackets

We use of … for things, places etc.
