WHAT ARE THE DELE?It is often not enough to know a language, but, rather, it is necessary to accredit such knowledge with an official diploma.

The DELE Diplomas in Spanish are official diplomas, accrediting the level of competence and mastery of the Spanish language, awarded by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain.

In Spain• Candidates holding a DELE B2 or DELE C2 and wishing to take competitive examinations for positions in the General State Administration or its public bodies, in the Social Security system’s managing entities and common services, or in the National Health System’s Administration of Health Institutions, shall be exempt from taking tests to prove knowledge of Spanish at the levels corresponding to the levels of said Diplomas.

• For obtaining a place in specialized health training (MIR, FIR or EIR), the Ministry of Health requires that candidates whose language is not Spanish have the DELE C1 or DELE C2.

• Students who have obtained the DELE C2 and are entering the Spanish education system after validation of their studies abroad, shall be exempt from taking the corresponding tests of competence in the Spanish language.

• The DELE are considered sufficient proof of competence in Spanish to carry out any professional or academic activity requiring the corresponding level of competence.

• The DELE make it easier to obtain study visas for Spain, because they accredit levels of language competence.

• They facilitate access to courses in Spanish as a foreign language in Official Language Schools (EOI).

Outside Spain • The DELE have been adopted by educational authorities and formal education centres as a complement to their own assessment programmes.

RecognitionThe DELE are official diplomas recognized internationally by public and private teaching institutions and systems, international cooperation agencies, institutions such as the Spanish Confederation of Employers’ Organizations (CEOE), Chambers of Commerce, Official Language Schools (EOI), foundations, firms and other entities.

They are a requirement for obtaining awards, assistance or grants from major higher education institutions, international cooperation agencies, and foundations.

ValidityThe DELE Diplomas are valid indefinitely.

ExcellenceDELE examinations are offered at the six levels established in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR), applied to and developed for Spanish in the Instituto Cervantes Curricular Plan. Levels of Reference for Spanish. Moreover, they have been designed following the guidelines of the Council of Europe’s Manual for Relating Language Examinations to the CEFR, which guarantees a practical method for establishing an international and objective standard for measuring the level to be reached in language assessment.

AdvantagesSince they accredit levels of language competence and are widely recognized in academia and the professional world, they make it easier to obtain study visas for Spain and, therefore, promote geographic mobility in these areas.

The dates and times of the written tests are established every year by Instituto Cervantes; the dates and times of the oral tests are established by the Examination Centres and candidates are notified individually with due advance notice.The registration period for all examinations opens on 16 February.

EXAMINATIONS 2015

Instituto Cervantes has a network of more than 900 Examination Centres spread out in more than 100 countries on every continent, where candidates can register and take the tests.

The examinations consist in different tests, which evaluate language skills in Spanish. To obtain DELE Diplomas in Spanish, in their different levels, it is necessary to pass all the tests, in accordance with the grading system established by Instituto Cervantes.

LevelB2

Capacity to understand the gist of complex texts and to interact with native speakers with sufficient fluency and spontaneity.

LevelA1

Capacity to understand and use the most common day-to-day expressions and simple sentences, in order to meet common real-life needs.*

LevelC1

Capacity to understand a wide range of complex, long texts, and to express themselves effortlessly, fluently and spontaneously.

LevelA2

Capacity to understand commonly used phrases and expressions in especially relevant experience areas, to communicate when carrying out simple everyday activities.*
